Threadwatch: Torture

I've got the feeling that this discussion (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=501703) on the permissibility of torture is slipping into a discussion on advocating torture, and torturing people simply to make them suffer doesn't sound legal to me:

We shouldn't torture them just to gain information. We should torture all terrorists, period. They should be tortured just because of their ruthless and hostile ways. They certainly deserve it.

Those who are actively trying to kill innocent civilians or are actively supporting those who do deserve to be tortured, slowly and painfully.

If this hasn't crossed a line yet, it seems worth monitoring as it seems to be approaching that line rather quickly.

Agreed. People say he's trolling, but he isn't. But he's coming damn close to it. Also, there was a rather unneeded insult somewhere in there, let me get it.

Now then. It's not like I wouldn't want to say that to his face either, but I believe saying something along the lines of "Wanking off to..." is somewhere in the "broken rules" category.

"wanking off to" is a reference to the obvious vicarious sadistic thrill he gets from thinking about torturing people. If that's a flame, then a poster whose only truly consistent argument is - whatever pisses people off and gets them to reply to him - IS trolling.

Yes, but it is still breaking the rules, whether or not he is simply responding to a troll. Still a blatant insult.

It's a metaphor for "perverse pleasure."

Anyway, I think I'll just allow the mods to determine whether it violates a rule or not.

God, damnit. I hate defending this guy, but people are indeed taking the bait.

Let's just give them slaps on the wrists and tell them "Don't feed the trolls".
