Is this the way to close a thread?

Barry, this forum isn't your personal soapbox. Stop creating useless threads just to tell everyone THE FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGIOUS RIGHT IS WINNING, BITCHES, I HAVE NUMBERS or you'll find yourself having some enforced forum holidays.
Last edited by GMC Military Arms : Today at 12:41 PM.

I think that the way the OP contributed to the thread was trollish (in an old fashioned sense: laying out a prepared line of defence, and luring posters into it, and hitting them with prepared responses. Trolling.)

But BarryGoldwater seems to have shot his wad on the first page. No problem. And all I saw was BG's ass getting kicked.

Was the OP the problem? Or BG's responses thereafter?

And my original point: closing a thread should be a sad and reluctant thing. Noblese Oblige.
Instead of which, you chose to make points:
useless [an insult in almost anyone's language]
"THE FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGIOUS RIGHT IS WINNING, BITCHES, I HAVE NUMBERS" = typifying another poster's position, including a gratuitous insult which BG did not use.
"Some" banning[s.] Threatening a banning is fair enough, but more than one? That implies you intend to be prejudiced and ban BG more than once, for one offence.

Let's not take this further. I'm happy to have this post disappear, if your banning comment could just be a little more ... 'moderate'?

Do a little research on The Red Arrow / MKULTRA.

Conservative cut-n-paste spam is just as bad as liberal cut-n-paste spam.

"The red arrow" gives six tourist destinations, top of Google.
"MKULTRA" seems to be a CIA program to research LSD.

Are you saying I am not subtle enough of mind?
Or do you think I'm a mindless "fight the power" nut who just wants to fight admins?

If you (The Most Glorious Hack) wanted to prove "cut-and-paste spamming" ... why not just link to the text which was supposedly cut-and-pasted?

The point I'm trying to make is that closing a thread in such an abusive way is in violation of the site rules, and counter-productive.

I hated BG's drift. I took the time to research the US census, and I felt I had a strong refutation of the OP. Finding the thread closed with such prejudice annoyed me -- I can only imagine how angry and insurrectional a poster sympathetic to BG might feel.

Closing threads is surely intended to stop trouble, not make it worse.

It's only made worse when you run to the Moderation forum to whine about it.

why not just link to the text which was supposedly cut-and-pasted?The first bloody post in the thread. Or are we to believe that he performed those surveys himself?

The point I'm trying to make is that closing a thread in such an abusive way is in violation of the site rulesIt is? News to me.

I can only imagine how angry and insurrectional a poster sympathetic to BG might feel.Likely relieved that such a thread was closed. Conservative trolls don't help the conservative cause any more that tin-foil hat wearing moon bats help the liberal cause.

Closing threads is surely intended to stop trouble, not make it worse. How has it been made worse?

Unless, of course, you're referencing this thread.

OK. I see that long rants containing more than one idea in sequence are dealt with by cutting them up into bits using quotes. I accept that, as it's used by a lot of the posters I respect here. I decline to cut Hack's post up into bits, including laborious quotes-of-quotes, because it destroys the debate for others.

I renounce all of my other contentions, and return to my first point: that's no way to close a thread.

Thankyou you reading my objection. Thankyou Most Glorious Hack for responding. :)

I agree, http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11422344&postcount=85 hardly seems like "mod like" behavior. Pffft.

Perhaps you'd like the Mods to wear kid gloves and act cautiously? Perhaps apologise profusely to the OP? Bend over, perchance?

Please. The Mods did what they wanted to, and in this case I applause them; a nice dose of 'STFU' is just what is need at times.

You know what, oh ye gang of n00bs and older posters alike, who suddenly think that you should come crying to Moderation every single time a Mod does something you don't absolutely agree with? Why don't you remind yourself that this is Max's site, and that the Mods are working for free (and for little thanks) and that you can always go somewhere else rather than trying to flex your 'holier than thou' muscles? The Mod conspiracy threads were always tiresome but this, 'instruction on the proper behaviour of a moderator' is even more so. Question, wait for an answer, but don't fucking lecture. You haven't earned that right.

MKULTRA/The Red Arrow and a half dozen other aliases was a troll who would come to this board, cut and paste entire articles from liberal websites, and rather than debate them would basically just say, "I'm right and you're all wrong."

I believe that what Hack is saying is that as this is essentially the same behavior except with a conservative spin, it is equally inappropriate.

Debate=fine. Soapbox and ignoring all opposing viewpoints is not. That's what blogging is for.

Then I believe that, according to the conversation here (if I'm interpreting it correctly, mods correct me if I'm wrong) this is the same as "I'm right and you're all wrong."

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=493182

They're also getting their reasons from an obviously conservative website.

It was brought up in the mod forum as well here:
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=493183

Title indicates it being flamebait, but I think it's more of "Conservative Spam."

Note: Yes I am democratic, but I also don't like democratic C&P as well or Dem. Extremist policies.

Really, i's rather pointless.

First of all, I have no idea who you are. Second of all, as I have only been banned once (for 2 days) I would guess that my behavior is almost always within the rules, and third of all, I'm not a mod and arnt subject to the same standards as they are.

Also, what the hell do I have to do with the behavior in question?

I've heard that if you catch Kat with the lights off, you can see a small halo above her head, and that TG was once visited by an Angel asking him to become the Father of Jesus in the second coming...

More to the point: I am a Democrat-supporter who is pointing at the reason that the party I like gets hammered, time after time.

Those reasons are systematic, and not the result of issues or policies.
Which makes discussing issues per-se pointless.

The Dems lose time-after-time because they have a progressive image.
THAT is the thing that needs shedding. - unless the DNC wishes to preside over a Party which will fare no better electorally than the Greens in Germany, or the UK.

Actually, this was the positive feedback from the Left:

'I'm a progressive Democrat, but your topic was shut down simply because it made excellent points.

It's completely wrong, but next time either make less effective points, or become a progressive Democrat, like I did'

O_O But you didn't see that the halo was in fact a metal coathanger bent into a circle, wrapped with gold tinsel from a Christmas garland, and taped to the back of my head?

Coooooool.
