What am I missing - a picture of food, and a link to gov law? Not allowed? Frankly I'm kinda curious about the nation name 'Fartsniffage' and why it's allowed. Go fig.

Tis not a link to a picture of food dear Lady.

Well, much less, seeing as that picture steps so far over the line in so many ways that it makes some other offences look positively mild.

Strange, the things to which one becomes desensitized.

What? What's this about? I haven't posted a link to goatse, and since the thread has been deleted I don't know what's going on.

Damn! After doing some checking up after being notified of this by WYTYG, I realise what has happened. I linked to a pic of Goulash - as a pun on Gulag. I used a pic I found on google images.

What I didn't realize was this:
Warning to people linking my pictures directly from their own site: if you use a picture on a forum or MSN Groups or the like, it will get the goatse treatment!

Please ask my permission before using a picture, online or offline. I hardly ever say no. You don't have to ask permission to link to this folder, though: that's perfectly harmless and OK with me.

So I apologize deeply. I didn't know of this, and it wasn't my intention at all. All I can say is that I'm sorry for my error, and ask for leniency.

Many, many apologies :(

ROFL, oh my God. What a great (if incredibly mean) idea by the guy. :p

But yeah, I seriously hope it doesn't get you in trouble. :S
Maybe Tactical Grace saw what had happened right away and that's why you're still here?

I'm also really glad you didn't really post that - my whole image of you was shattered with one fell swoop... :(

So what have we learned? Always read the small print. ;)

It seems like an honest mistake, and from what I know about ol' Gravlen here, he doesn't seem to be the type that would link to such a site or picture on purpose. I think the mods should be lienent as well.

This is just one of the many reasons hot-linking and the ensuing bandwidth theft are bad, hmmkay? In the future one should recall to use some hosting place like imageshack.us or putfile.com.

to be fair, the linked to picture didn't seem to fit with the post.

sorry gravlen, should have give you a heads up before coming to moderation. Hope you don't get in trouble.

I have learned to be more careful... And I'm fully prepared to "take a little vacation" if that's the will of the mods because of this oversight. I just hope I don't lose my nation or something like that over this kind of stupidity from my side.

See? It WAS a picture of food, which is what I saw when I clicked it, hence the confuzzlement. o.O (I didn't think I was going completely mad ... yet.)

Oi. Ebilness, and a lesson to host yer own pics, neh? Silly question - different browsers make a difference in content viewed on something like this, perhaps?

The matter is under discussion. This comes as something of a surprise.

EDIT: No action will be taken. Just goes to show that linking off Google image search can have unpredictable consequences.

Almost had it happen to me once, a long time ago. Tried to link a pic of Helena Bonham Carter, but I was new to using the img tags so I previewed the post first. Lucky for me.

Mabye someone should put a warning about this up on the forums or in the stickies, so it doesn't happen again.

It's fairly well known to be done by several sites as a means of stopping people stealing their bandwidth. The best solution is to host the image yourself, there's photobucket.com and that other one just for that. It's basic common sense and good manners, really; linking to images you don't host is like bringing people into someone else's house to show them a picture on their wall without asking. Not surprising people can get unpleasant about it.

Our FAQ is a guide to this site, not everyone else's, and we really don't have time to compile a list of sites that will punish you for stealing their bandwidth.

No, but perhaps a reminder could be included in the FAQ that what happened to Gravlen is possible and that people should be very careful when hotlinking images or, best-case scenario, host the images somewhere themselves, as you suggested. Compiling a list of other sites isn't needed, I don't think, but it would be a shame for someone to get banned/DEATed because of an honest mistake.

And Gravlen, please don't go hotlinking to tubgirl now. :p

The longer we make the rules, the less likely that people will read them. We'll not be adding this.

We could add "use a little common sense", but those who would follow that advice don't need to read it, and those who need it won't read it.

Alas, sadly, that's probably true.

I suppose this would be a good time to plug the Imageshack Firefox plugin (http://reg.imageshack.us/content.php?page=extension). All it requires is that you're an Imageshack member and that you have Firefox (duh). Once it's properly installed, all images in your browser will have an additional right-click option to upload it to your imageshack account. Normal filesize restrictions still apply.

With this nifty little piece of code you can move the image to imageshack in a few seconds to prevent unneeded bandwidth leeching from other sites, and hotlinking dramas such as this one :)
