So what? Was this flamebaiting?

Because I can't see why this is locked, but nothing is done about all the constant insults against "airheads," "plastic" women and "shallow" guys that threads such as "Why do Nice Guys Finish Last?" seem to be all about.

You posted a rant which due to its tone, could not be debated. Responses were therefore immediately of a similar nature - counter-rants. If you want to have a discussion, start a discussion. Do not post a tirade of abuse while covering any anticipated dissent with claims that views to the contrary are a symptom of denial.

The thread could have been better named.
Neo didn't seem to be abusive, the subject wasn't too offensive, and generally I think letting Neo take his lumps from the outraged population would have been a better response.
Of course I'm new here, and it looks like Neo has a reputation of sorts.
This thread could have gotten nasty, but I think it was closed too soon.

He was abusive, the subject was handled in unnecessarily hostile fashion, and why permit the inevitable outrage to be vented, when that is the goal of the troll? Locking at the first page is perfect timing, as far as I am concerned. That he subsequently complained here is evidence he was unable to gain satisfaction.

Thanks for replying. Your moniker is funny, btw.
Agreed he was hostile. Calling him a troll leaves me cold, since I've only skimmed his previous posts. In fact, I'm taking your word that Neo is a "him."
I think that thread starters should hold to a higher standard than subsequent posters. As the presumptive moderator, they should try to progress the debate by focussing on the issue they've raised, but no more. Of course a lot of threads are started with very contentious statements, but setting the terms of reference and the title of the debate should be enough for anyone. Is there a guideline saying something like that?

Appealing a moderation decision is an admission of guilt? Are you sure about that?

Not formally, but what you describe is best practice which I have tried to encourage since being Modified. There is sadly no "General Forum Debate Best Practice" sticky in the General Forum, although it is a project which I would like to commence quite soon. I do feel people would benefit from a clearly laid out set of advice snippets and social responsibilities.

Not as such, but given guilt, it is an indication of frustrated goals. When trolling takes place and threads are locked, appeals by offenders are uncommon, as it is usually the case that the threads are locked late, when the trolls and responders have already made the statements and received the responses they wanted. Complaints from offenders regarding thread locks are usually an indication that their agenda was interrupted prematurely.

That's going to vary according to the poster.
I have started only one thread, but I'm pretty sure that if my thread was locked, I'd be angry, and appealing. If that makes any sense.

Agree with the "does Japan suck" thread locking, though.
The link was bad enough, without Neo cherrypicking it.
