Baiting
In this thread -
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=488261
It was suggested that USian or USAian are acceptable terms provided they not become an excuse to bait people who don't like the term.
Dobbsworld entered a thread that has USian in the title and here was the entire contribution -
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11198070&postcount=17
I think I'll ignore everything relevant about the thread and fixate exclusively on the use of the hurtful, spiteful offensive and loathesome descriptor contained at the end of your thread title, TBF.
Just kidding.

Probably used the term 'USian' once too many.
EDIT: It's, of course, very mild, but do we have to make this come up in EVERY thread. Nothing about that thread requires any discussion of the term. Everyone complains that Americans are being too sensitive, but what does one expect when not just the term, but a discussion of the term has to be hammered at them in every thread involving the US.

Yes, he is being mildly inconvenient.
The usage of 'USian' in the thread title is clearly casual and inoffensive, it may even be a way of staying within the character limit. Just because the potential for offense exists, does not mean it should be stirred up. I would suggest that if a particular instance of usage of any controversial term is not in itself a big deal, then there is no need to make it into a big deal.

I couldn't agree more. However, it appears that this is exactly what DW is attempting to do. I'm not sure what it was that made this issue blow up in the first place, but it appears that some individuals are not content with letting the dust settle.
I can't imagine a more innocuous use of the term and clearly even people who dislike the term haven't found any issue with it, why is someone who thinks the term is harmless trying to bait people into another bitch session about the term? At the very least, it's an attempt at a hijack and at most a flamebaiting. It resembles a time when every single thread was about whether or not Eut is a centrist.

Are you kidding me, Jocabia? It is to laugh - Hell's Bells, I underscored the humour with sentence number two of the first post - specifically, to inform any and all who might possibly take offense that sentence number one was a jest intended to allude to the epic crapfest of Sunday night.

Have notions of fun - of honest-to-goodness, light-hearted fun - become so damnably difficult for you to grapple with that you feel it necessary to take umbrage at the drop of a clown's hat?
*re-affixes red rubber nose, straps on oversized shoes*
Honestly? Not everyone shares the same sense of humour, but please don't insist that we do without humour entirely, for the sake of nothing short of being humourless.
*honks bicycle horn, smiles & waves good night*
Dobbsworld salutes you!
*edit: I just read Kat's sticky (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=488660):
Really. Having three a week on "why are people offended by it" is a bit much.
Suffice it to say some US citizens are offended by the term and some are not.
Jocabia, I'll make a point of not adding comments to any such threads in future, if you'll meet me halfway and stop being so damned prickly about every little quip I make. I swear, I'm starting to feel as though you're stalking me from thread to thread. Quit it, or put me on ignore, at this point I don't care either way. If you really, honestly, do have as tenuous a sense of humour as your posts here suggest, I can't honestly see the two of us getting along well at all in future - and while that's certainly saddening, perhaps it's best if we agree to not impinge on each other - I won't impinge on you with my humour, and you won't impinge on me with your strict adherence to political correctness.
I'll get the ball rolling and put you on ignore. There. Now, all you'll need do is reciprocate, and I'm certain the volume of complaints will dwindle accordingly. Problem solved.
Though I'll still salute you for your dogged determination in the face of oppression, etc., etc. etc. -
Dobbsworld salutes you!
*honks bicycle horn one last time for Jocabia*
I don't know what you're talking about. I actually like you as a poster. I just wish you'd stop with the USian thing. Even here you imply that I must somehow being oversensitive. I'm just tired of having to discuss the USian issue in every thread. I'm certain you're tired of it too. You're allowed to use the term. What can you possibly gain by spamming a thread about the issue. And I guess one off-topic USian post wasn't enough, so you had to spew out another. Yes, I laughed actually, but that doesn't make them on-topic or less baiting.

Sorry, Jocabia - I can't read your posts anymore. Remember? In the best interests of both of us, I'vve had to put you on ignore. Sorry, but I can't risk you misinterpreting what I say. My apologies that it's had to come to this, but I wish you all the best - and may good humour, good times, and good wit find you at every turn.

Group hugs in Moderation? That's a new one. :p
But why not? *group hug*
Does help that I'm laughing. I'll take hugs from however's giving them.

As long as there are no more threads about it, what is the problem? Where can the crybabists have their fits?

Oppressed? How? You're allowed to use the term. The mods made it pretty clear that it's not the word that is an issue. It's about the fact that some posters (the poster I reported in this thread was not acted against) are continuing to stir things up because they know it annoys some people.
The only person who brought the issue up in the thread we are talking about was someone who couldn't pass up an opportunity to make fun of people who don't like the term. This thread wouldn't exist if people would just use the term normally and leave the people who don't like it alone.
I don't understand how one can feel oppressed when no one is telling you cannot use the term.

Do you also feel oppressed because using "the N word" in a flamebait would also be against the rules?
Look at what this term is doing to us. It's turning brother against friend, fantisizer against object of fantasy. Won't someone please think of the children?
Can someone explain to me why 'USian' is offensive?
