Flame

Before I point out the errors of his assumptions I thought it apropriate to ask someone to bring this poster back down to earth first.
I'm surprised you never got an answer but I don't see the flame. I didn't exactly enjoy his response to you, but I don't see how an angry response automatically makes it a flame. Can you tell me what he called you?

Is 'Shut the fuck up" considered a suitable comment in this forum?

Is it a flame? I see people say stuff like that all the time actually and I've not seen much action by the mods on it UNLESS there was a lot of other rulebreaking included. I don't see anything in that post that would warrant mod action. From the tone, I would suspect it's not the only one like it, but you presented one post where the worst comment is "shut the fuck up". What did you think would happen? It's not a flame. It's rude, but rudeness isn't in and of itself against forum rules. There's nothing really excessive about it, and if you searched I'm pretty sure you could find similar comments are not infrequent.
By all merit it is a flame;
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/flame.html
A searing e-mail or newsgroup message in which the writer attacks another participant in overly harsh, and often personal, terms. Flames are an unfortunate, but inevitable, element of unmoderated conferences.
I DID do a search and found very few people telling one another to 'shut the fuck up' in any literal sense. Even if so - either flaming is against forum rules or it is not. Nobody expects the mods to police each thread - but when a complaint is brought up the fact that others "say stuff like that all the time" is not a compelling argument.
I strongly doubt you or anyone else would want to participate in a forum where telling someone you disagree with to shut the fuck up is an acceptable form of discourse. There are plenty of people I would be pleased to share it with - though it is doubltful they would be any more accepting of this than I am.
IF the mods decide this is an acceptable form of communications it will certainly be a de-evolution of the quality of NS. I would have to work it into my complex repertoire.

Being rude is not cause for sanction. In one of these threads a reference to a post that says shut the fuck up is reviewed by the mods. In the second thread, a mod tells Whittier to shut up. The added swear word doesn't generally change mod rulings. This isn't a devolution. The mods don't endorse such behavior generally, but they don't sanction behavior unless it's grievous or it's repeated. Are you suggesting this is either?
Swearing isn't against the rules. Telling people to shut up isn't against the rules.

Telling someone to shut up in moderation.

When it's part of an excessively rude post, they will often say something, but all by itself, I've never seen anything that makes one believe it will be considered an issue.
Thanks for the help Jo, now shut the fuck up... ;)

That made my day. I'll admit I'm surprised by the lack of mod response.

I'm surprised one of the mods hasn't popped into this thread to tell the two of you to shut the fuck up. ;)

I just peed on myself and I think I might be pregnant. Good thing you're not responsible.
