DCD appears to have created thread and then abandoned it. What was the point? Just to declare war on Islam and then let the flamefest begin.

I know he is often joking, but I'm sure if the mods search a bit, they can find quite a few examples of him saying these kinds of things. I don't think declaring that he is going to start burning down things is appropriate. Even if he's joking, he's getting more people to believe he's serious and say similar things. Just look at the included link in the OP.

That's the struggle, isn't it? How do you change people's view to one that's more rounded if the threads keep getting locked because people go over the top. That link makes a good point. I just wonder how well this thread can move forward with such a doozy of a first post.

Probably not very well, but in this case I feel there is greater educational value in directing a spotlight on some other examples, than there is in letting that one comment stand and ending the discussion at that. At least then the more open-minded people will see something of shared unpleasant characteristics, rather than go away having seen one group demonised.

I agree. I have to say, I think that this is that one area where finding a way to keep an open and reasonable discussion is so much more difficult than almost anywhere else. For the most part, violent or aggressive verbal assaults are considered to be more of the fringe of most issues even hotbeds like abortion, religion or homosexuality but on the Arab/Muslim front there is a VERY large portion of the population that has reverted to a mentality similar to that of the view of Asians during WWII or similar "we're at war with a race" times.

I don't know what the best solution is, but I appreciate the efforts you guys are making at making sure the discussion continues. Without your efforts the milder voices on both sides of this issue would not be heard. I know it's a pain in the butt, and thank you for being willing to keep these lines open.

I wasn't BSing. I think this stuff is important. I kind of stole the sentiment from what TMGH (I think it was TMGH) said in the thread that complained about allowing the The Dark Shadowy Nexus continue here. I think we do a lot more by shiny a light into these dark corners than simply shutting our eyes and turning away (he didn't use those words, but you get the point).

Actually the idea that it is better to argue a racist into defeat than to censor him, is one of the founding principles of the whole Moderation system and the Forums. It is a common sentiment, I believe.
