A question

I'd like to start a thread about the publication of the pictures and videos from Abu Ghraib, recently released by Salon. I'd like to link to the article in the discussion, but some of the photos include nudity. Now, in order to get to the Salon article, you either have to be a subscriber or you have to sit through a day-pass advertisement, so there would be no hotlinking, and I certainly wouldn't link to any photos including nudity anyway.

I know there are rules against showing graphic photos of abortion or of people killed in war, but since I wouldn't be linking directly to the photos themselves, I was wondering if it would be okay to link to the story, especially if I put a warning up about the content. It's an important story, I think, and some of the photos have become iconic already--the hooded man with the electrodes on his fingers, for instance--but I don't want to run up against anything that would cause the site trouble.

We have discussed your query.

You may not link to the article.

However, you may state the Salon site as a reference and inform thread participants that the article may be located and viewed on the site once they are subscribed to it. You should also make clear when giving the reference that any content people locate, will be of a graphic nature.

Thanks. That's about what I figured would come out of it.

I am sorry we could not be more helpful. :(

However, we do not wish to open the floodgates to obscene content and be forced to decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not it is 'worthy'.
