in my new region, The International Alliance i have set up a regional moderator system. just because i didnt want to call up a mod everytime a big flame happened in the region. so i was wondering, is it legal? they would just be my eyes and ears, so that they point out flames so that nations can be banned etc. i'd like a mods opinion

I'm not a mod, but I'll give you my somewhat-experienced opinion:

I don't think there should be a problem with having people watch over your region to help you take care of it. Because you're allowed to do mostly whatever you want to your own region, like banning people for no reason (Although it is frowned on), having people who watch what happens and then tell you later probably isn't really a problem.

I realize I'm not a Moderator, but do you realize you don't have the authority/access to the system to make anyone a 'moderator'? All you're really doing is having some players keep an eye out for problems - which will, if serious enough, need to be passed on to real Moderators who can do something about it?

That's pretty much what anyone does who reports problems here or through the GHP or other methods. Any player is capable and within their rights to report problems. I'm kind of confused as to your point in all this, and why you'd need the Mod's clearance to have specified players take on the responsibility of reporting problems - or are you thinking something else?

ps: Heya Haraki :D

they would only be called moderators, and would only be my eyes and ears so that i can ban people from the region. i was just wondering if it is permitted or not

If it's your region (and it seems to be), it's my understanding that you can do what you like with it. That includes banning people for any reason or for no reason at all.

The only problem I could see is calling them 'moderators' when on this particular site, 'moderator' denotes someone in a position to deal with problems officially - which your people would not.

Personally, would suggest calling them something else, just to avoid any possible confusion. Nations have been deleted for moderator 'impersonation' before. Best to be on the safe side. Other than that, yeah - unless I'm horrendously mistaken, if you're the founder of the region, you're well within your rights to ban people from it if you feel they shouldn't be there. Read up on the One-Stop Rules Shop (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=416023) for further clarification. Regional bits can get a lil fuzzy here and there when it comes to delegates, but I think founders have firmer ground to operate from.

I agree. I don't think calling them moderators is in your best interests, but I don't see any problems with their purpose or function, provided you know that you can't give them any power or change their status at all. The most they can do is be your informants in name, and report to you on what they see. Kind of like a good samaritan, I guess. Because you have all the power in your region, I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to have people help you out.

I agree with the general consensus here, there's likely (I only say likey and not definitely as it is usually rather unwise to speak in absolutes about game law without a moderater badge under your name) nothing at all illegal about the concept, but you'll certainly want to call them something other than moderators. Besides, moderators (no offense intended) is kind of a bland title, something like Lieutenant or Rottweiler would be much more exciting titles. Your current one of Regional Patrolmen isn't to shabby either.

Ootek says, "Bad idea".

Seriously though, naming regional officers after game officials is not wise.

No.

Call them watchdogs. Call them Guardians. Call them anything you want, but don't call them Moderators, Mods, Admins, or Administrators. If you or they use those words on NationStates, you're claiming powers that they don't have. Recipe for deletion.

If you want them to report to the Founder (you) so that you can eject them from your region, that's fine by us. If they spot abusive behavior, they should probably report it directly to the mods via the Getting Help page, which any player can do.
