An explanation of locked threads? [split]

query... can the mods (and I know some do) provide an explination when a thread is locked? I think that would 1) cut down on the "why is my thread locked" threads in Moderation and 2) provide examples to everyone where the line was when it's crossed (spammy, flamy, baity, trolly)

For the most part, we do try to say why a thread was locked. If you look at the most recently locked threads in Moderation, Frisbeeteria explained why he locked them. There is one thread that was locked that didn't have an explanation, but was pretty obvious as to why it was locked. There are certain things that the Moderation staff know that the player base doesn't, and using that information, we have locked threads without explanation, because of the fact that certain information is best kept to ourselves.

I can guarantee that we all try to give explanations in locking a thread, but sometimes, we do get overwhelmed with things to do, and we simply don't remember to. I for one have done that a few times, but my general way of acting is to explain why a thread is locked, while locking it.

I sometimes won't explain a lock if it will bump a thread back onto the front page. I don't think that a "mod bump" for explanation is worth the advertising value on a thread that should remain dead.

I never thought of that, but that's an excellent explanation. You need a reason for locking field like you have a reason for editing or deleting field.

I've deleted threads that could have been locked for precisely that reason.

I have a question.

Would it not be easier simply to give a breif explanation of why a thread was deleted, or locked?

I know most Mods do, but, if it was "mandatory" wouldnt this help to reduce the number of complainers who always ask "Why was my thread locked?"

and, it may reduce the number of threads in this forum, asking the very same thing.

Also, it would be seen as a magnamonius gesture to us players, who make this site possible.

Did you not read the thread at all?

Sometimes skulking about quietly is the best policy. I have no plans to change that for any 'mandatory' assuagement of rulebreakers.

And that's the bottom line because Stone Cold said so.
