I must side with him and say the entire thread is a rather poor troll attempt.

Eh, I was kinda hoping it was at least someone misinformed about the offensiveness of the word, and was sincerely wondering as to whether gays would wish to be straight or not.

We have a TV show run by gays called "Queer Nation". How is "Queer" offensive?

When "Queer" was first used to describe gay people, it was used as a derogatory term, but it is now frequently used by gay people of themselves. The reason I've heard for this is that by "taking control" of the word in this way, it somehow renders it less harmful. It's similar to the way the word "******" has entered the vocabulary of many black people, admittedly usually with a variant spelling. Still, a white person should never call a black person a ******, and it's generally unwise for a straight person to call a gay person queer. In addition to this, many black people are unhappy about anyone, including other black people, using the n-word, however spelt, and many gay people are similarly unhappy about anyone using the word queer to refer to homosexuality.

In my opintion it's safer just to stick to "gay" or "homosexual" as these words seem to be pretty much universally acceptable, but I may be wrong...

Some trolling in that thread by Presbyterian Yorkshire. Unforunately he's got quite a few biters.

Great, following this precedent anyone who states that homosexuality is a sin or an abomination unto God can get banned. Toodles everyone! :(

Seriously, stop flaming. Homosexuality is not a sin nor is it wrong. The moderators are trying to promote a tolerant atmosphere.

It all depends on the way its stated, Neo Rogolia. There's nothing wrong with believing that it is a sin, just as long as you state it politely, rather than the way that he posted, which was obviously meant to upset others.

The only reason he received a 5-day forum ban, rather than a simple warning was the fact that he had previous warnings and deletions.

Just to add on to what Euroslavia said, and to offer a bit of clarification.

There is a difference between saying "homosexuality is an abomonation" and to call a poster an abomonation. In the linked post, 'Presbyterian Yorkshire' directly attacked another poster, which is unacceptable.

In other words, love the sinner and hate the sin.

No need to be snide, especially in this forum.

No need to be snide, especially in this forum.

I'm not being snide (why do you people always think I am being snide, whatever I write? Is it the way I write? The words I use? What?), it really did happen. Maybe you didn't mean to be funny, but I found it funny, in the ironic sort of way, and felt like letting you know.

This last week's casual banter in the moderation forum led me to believe that it was OK to treat you moderators like semi-normally and let you know when you were being funny, or that sort of thing, but I suppose there's only a few posters that can act that way, or that will be able to do so without always having to fear verbal reprimand. Some consistency would be nice, so one knows how to act, but I suppose I shall have to take this as a lesson and continue to treat the moderation forum like I've done so far. So, do please forgive me for abandoning decorum. My intention was never to be snide.
