Requesting Clarification [ATTN: Cog]

Ok, I'm NOT disbuting the charge, since it'll be futile, but rather an explanation.

It's high school - you leave your bloody rights, except the right to basic humane treatment and the right to remain silent at the door. You don't like it? Tough shit.
We all have opinions on how Turkishsquirrel behaved in school. We may agree or disagree on whether or not he was respectful towards his teachers or whether or not he has to be respectful towards his teachers, first. While on NationStates, however, he has been polite and civil towards other players. The same cannot be said of you, Kryozerkia.

Kryozerkia: Official Warning - Flaming and flamebait.

This is from the kids don't get respect thread...

This wasn't directed at the original poster; my first reply on the 3rd page was directed at the original poster. This one was a general statement about how I feel about high school.

The usage of "you" in this case was the impersonal and undirected "you", so how come this is a flame/flame bait?

The usage of "you" in this case was the impersonal and undirected "you", so how come this is a flame/flame bait? The charges of flaming and flamebaiting are based on my interpretation that the usage of "you" was specifically directed at "Turkishsquirrel". If it were undirected, then you would be correct: That would not be either flaming or flamebait. It might qualify as trolling against "little snotty kids" (your words), but it would be more questionable as to whether or not it would get an official warning when treated as an isolated incident.

So, whether or not the charge of flaming and flamebaiting stand depends upon whether or not those comments were directed at "Turkishsquirrel". You claim that they were not directed; rereading the post now, I can see how it would make sense when "you" is interpreted in an undirected sense. However, another concern is that we Mods don't want people throwing around directed insults and then later trying to claim that they were undirected; in this particular case, there is reason to believe (based upon your choice-of-words and the context of the discussion) that the directed sense was intended.

I will confer with another Moderator on this matter. Regardless of outcome, though, I recommend caution in clarifying to whom your comments are directed; if someone can reasonably read a set of comments as being both inflammatory and aimed specifically at them, then you should rethink your words.
