I believe calling someone a "dumbass" and "an exceptional idiot" counts as a flame.

Perhaps. It is still a flame.

Personally, I might not have reported it if this type of flame was not a habit of this poster. I can show more if necessary, but I think this one example is a clear violation of forum rules.

Yeah, if the poster does it frequently I understand. I'm juist so use to all the abuse that gets flung around the forums that I was hoping for something really crude and abrasive :)

have we really gotten to the point where we cant call someone a dumbass or idiot on an internet forum??

at what point does it being nice get silly?

edit: when will telling someone they are wrong be considered a flame?

After 1,600 posts, I'm surprised that you're not aware of this.

Telling someone they are wrong is neither flambaiting nor trolling as long as you're civil in how you say it. If you tell someone that they're wrong in a very snide manner, then that would be flamebaiting.

I've told B0zzy in no uncertain terms to knock it off. If he does it again anywhere else, then post here.

That is because, when sober, I find it wiser to be polite. I understand that I gain nothing by being offensive, though it is often tempting.

I just think that "dumbass" and "idiot" are not very offensve.

Whatever, it isnt up to me to decide on these things.

You're right, 'dumbass' was a bit harsh. Also, 'exceptional idiot' was exceptionally harsh, particularly not knowing the relative thickness of anyone's skin.

Regardless of the baiting posted in the link I was responding to, and regardless of other cases where mods have suggested baiting behavior begets unflattering responses, I will freely conceed that TCT is actually not a dumbass nor an exceptional idiot.

My intention was not to create hurt feelings, tears of sorrow, broken hearts, indigestion or flatulence and if it did I regret it. It was simply to emphasize that my pontifications were based on broader horizons than TCT stated in his prior post, and that I find the implied suggestion that I am out of touch with reality absurd (I can say absurd, no?) if not outright insulting.

In the future I'll substitute the word 'Sparky' for 'Dumbass'. In all it's simple glory that will solve the problem of people feeling flamed when the intention is simply not there. It could be just as effective as other posters who suggest people spend more time reading about reality before they pontificate - and I won't have to use my thesarus to find big words like pontificate.

Of course, using 'Sparky' isn't nearly as fun as insulting everyone's intelligence, is it TCT.

See? You don't really need to use words like 'Dunmass' and 'idiot' to insult people the same way, eh? TCT is a shining example of that. Just think what a great forum this would be if we all could follow TCTs example of civility.

That said, four of the six links (all except the fourth and fifth) are examples of borderline flamebait.

The both of you are guilty of sniping other players, and the both of you need to stop. If you two can both do that, we'll be okay and I don't have to pull out the Heavy Hammer of Mod.

I will rein it in, but I must protest.

I reported a specific instance of a rule violation. I could go through and find many, many more examples of B0zzy resorting to open name-calling. It is my understanding that is against the rules.

I do not think it appropriate to reward his "but TCT is naughty too" response by equating his flaming with my "borderline flamebait." Particularly given that B0zzy's response to your ruling is itself an example of borderline flamebait and insult aimed at me.

Being snide or aggressive in argument I did not believe was against the rules. It is good to be reminded from time to time to be more polite -- and I will strive to do so -- but could list many, many examples of B0zzy and many, many other posters being sharp, snide, etc. Perhaps we are being less than exemplary, but that is not violating the rules.

I could defend the individual statements in context (particularly the first two as you will note the author admitted the quesiton was deliberately unintelligent -- a trick to prove how stupid people were), but I see no point. I will be more polite.

I think there is a message to be found here Cat Tribe. If you whine and complain about other peoples somewhat mild behaviour, they are likely to act similarly towards you.

snide attitude=KO'd. Thanks Cog, I was grumpy because I perceived the rules not being applied evenly. My perception was flawed and I am glad.
