Hello, here's a question for a mod.

This computer is a laptop and I use it at work. I have a UN nation and 4 puppets. My son has a bunch of nations at home. Our home computer has been having some problems, so I let him use this laptop at home over the weekend.

He tells me none of his nations are in the UN, but I wonder whether it matters. Could he have a UN nantion since he's playing from a completely different location? Or is he right that because it is the same laptop computer, we can't both be in the UN even though I only log on from work and he only logs on from home?

Thanks.

He is correct. Since it is the same computer, it will probably have the same IP address, and would get picked up on the cheatscan, no matter where it was. You must not be in the UN if he is to have a UN nation, and vice versa.

Not a mod, just someone who's heard just about every possible version of that story.

I use PC's a bunch... just wanted to say something...

At work, that PC will have a different IPA than when at home, the IPA is dependant on where you login, not the PC itself. For example, if I used my cable modem, I get my usual IPA. Should I hook-up dial-up to the same PC, the IPA would differ. My laptop on my home network has one IPA, on the school WiFi, a different one entirely.

HOWEVER, the mods will still be able to tell that the nations belong to the same PC... probably due to the DNR or Cookie history...

*NOTE* Ish not a mod. If he was, there'd be no more antacids in the house. */NOTE*

In this (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=274575), we come to this point:

"]Q: My friends operate those other UN member nations. We all share the same computer.
A: I'm sorry if that's the case. There is no way for the game to tell how many people are on the other end of a computer. For this reason, breaches of UN rules involving only two members are usually punished with expulsion, not deletion.

However, please note this important point: we cannot take your word on how many people are really behind your computer. This is not because you are untrustworthy, it's simply that otherwise there is no way to enforce the UN rules.

If you use the same computer and have two UN nations, regardless of whether they belong to two different people or if they both have been accessed from another computer/IP, once they are on the same computer, technically, you are UN multiing even if you didn't mean to do so. That's the gist of the point above.

Also, if you are playing the game from work, you should be careful, too, because if co-workers are also playing the game with UN nations, depending on how the IP schematic is set-up, you might show up as a UN multi as well.

Aye TH... you are the practical side, I the technical side...

case in point... your son is right, you may appear to be a multi IF he has a UN nation

Ain't it cool that you can take your computer to Timbucktoo and it can still be recognized as the same machine! So it doesn't matter where you play from, if it's the same piece of machinery, you're out of luck.

So, what happens if the computer is taken apart and the hard drive reused on one machine and the CPU on another? Which part is "the same computer"?

"If you reuse even so much as a drive-mounting screw or floppy cable, our sophisticated and heureristic AI anti-cheat mechanism will automatically step into high gear and detect your multiple nations. Automatic emails will be sent to the mods, with copies going to Interpol, just in case. Intelligent extensionals will sneak out of your house and paint 'UN Multi' across your roof in 4' letters with infrared paint, so that our NS satellites can pick up your physical address. And don't even THINK of using the same electrical outlet, bubba. We've got you wired."

The preceeding might possibly have been in jest. Think about it a sec - which part of your computer can STORE data? The solution is left as an exercise for the student.

As has been mentioned the IP address comes from the device used to access the internet. This isn't the HDD or the CPU. In most cases it will be a cable or ADSL modem, or a proxy server (if connected to a LAN at work). :headbang:
