Signature Length

Since this has come up again and my signature has had to be reduced I do hope the mods sent out messages to the many others with 12, 13, 14 line signatures if my 10 lines were too many.

I got one but I am looking for where it says how to shrink the size of the letters.

They said 8 lines max, not the size of the fonts (unless it's massive). They also said to include multiple links on one line by shrinking the font. Your sig is 11 lines long, did you get a telegram telling you to limit the size of it?

I had a slow morning today, so I turned on signature viewing and surfed a few dozen threads. Every time I spotted a sig of 9 lines or greater, I sent out a telegrams curtly but politely informing users of the 8 line max, and offering suggestions on how to reduce the size while retaining the content. I have no intention of being a hardass about it, but that intent doesn't always carry across in a short telegram.

If there is a way to track huge signatures apart from the Mark One eyeball, I haven't discovered it. If you feel unfairly singled out, sorry. I could only inform the folks I saw with huge sigs. Feel free to mention this thread to others, or to report oversize sigs here. It's all part of our 'clutter-reduction' program on the forums - reducing massive sigs, eliminating redundant stickies, and collecting the rules all in one place. Hopefully, people will be able to concentrate more on having fun here and less on whether or not something is illegal by forum rules.

Here's a copy of the boilerplate telegram, if anybody didn't see the whole thing:Please shorten your forum signature. 8 lines maximum, including blank lines.

Here are some tips. Quotes in quote boxes take up a minimum of five lines ("Quote", top line, "Originally posted by", the quote itself, bottom line), so you might want to eliminate those. Remove all those extra blank lines and space things using the [center] and [right] tags instead. Be aware that long lines wrap to form new lines in some browsers, so your eight lines might look like 10 or 11 to me. Consider a smaller font size. You might also shrink links and put them on a single line.

Thank you for cooperating. (this is a standardized message, please do not respond)

Did I miss the ruling on this in my absence? I don't ever recall their people a ruling saying eight lines max, which is why I'm asking... If someone could direct me to it, I'd be appreciative.

I don't recall the 8 line ruling either, I've shortened my sig anyway.

Signature Spam: Forum signatures give you space to include a few carefully selected links or quotes. Sigs are attached to every post, and must therefore conform to clutter-reducing rules. Maximum size should never exceed eight lines, including blank lines and quote lines. (A short quote takes up 5 lines - "quote", attribution line, two lines for the box, and one line for the quote). Large font sizes should be avoided and may be trimmed without warning. Posting forbidden links is not allowed. Jolt policy prohibits images in signatures as well, so don't try IMG tags.
From The One-Stop Rules Shop (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=416023). I don't recall where I got the exact ruling, and the phrasing is mine, but I pulled all of the material for that thread from existing precedent. It's not a new rule, it's just never been enforced with any regularity.

Without any wrapping whatsoever, my sig is eight lines and size one. It is pretty wide however and may wrap on displays smaller than widescreen 17". Is this going to be OK?

i remember that there was a non binding request to make sigs small and any mod could call a sig crap at any time but i dont rember the 8 line rule any where

I didn't remember this one either, but then again my real area of precedent expertise is in Gameplay-related affairs. A quick search, however, notes precedent in the NationStates v. Decisive Action (sig) case of 8 January 2005.

A couple of links in small text is acceptable, but enormous sigs are visually disruptive to threads they are posted in. A mod decision some time ago recommended sigs be no bigger than eight lines and noted that those larger than that may be edited, though it'd take some digging to find that.

I couldn't locate the precedent GMC cited by a quick search, but even in the absence of the same, NationStates v. Decisive Action (sig) is sufficient. Of course, I prefered the days before sig lines were enabled.... :p

I just modded my sig... can fris or another mod make sure it is 8 now?

*has a 1600x1200 rez on a 21" monitor, so he dont know if it wraps*

*NOTE* Ish not a mod. If he was, there'd be no more antacids in the house. */NOTE*

I am a bit worried about any mods running 640x480... might double back... but I doubt anyone runs under 800x600 anymore

I think you'd be fine in 640x480. Why a mod will run a res that low I don't know :D

I'm told industry standard is 1024 x 768 so if it's fine on that why should you suffer because someone is blind.

We can lock this now right? Or delete, either or.
As a rule, we don't delete threads that have official rulings in them. They are part of the public record (and public accountability of mods).

The lock part I can agree with.
