How does one become a M0d?

ok you've all probably been asked this a zillion times or so, but i'm curious and i've been looking through the Nuts & Bolts section for ages now and am still none the wizer. So, how does one become a mod? i'm asking mostly out of cuiosity (are you asked/invited by the other mods, do you put yourself forward??) and don't explicitly have a wish to become one (though i wouldn't say no ;) ;) ).

also, another small question: why "Klamathing"? who came up with that name  i'm guessing it has some kind of hidden meaning or insider joke or something - its not a term i've heard anywhere outside of NS (or much in NS for that matter...)

and while i'm at it, do mods need to be on the IRC channels, or does that just help? are mods chosen for specific areas of the forum (like General, International Incidents, The UN etc) or are the mods supposed to have a working knowledge of all NS?

sorry about the berating questions, but i started reading the General Forum Rulings and good General advice thread (in General) and went on to The Moderation Forum (in The Moderation Forum...catchy title Euroslavia  ) and on to The Honest-to-God Truth about Moderation thread... not sure why exactly. guess i'm bored :D

edit: ooh one last question: are mods discouraged from posting 'normal stuff' (like in the Paradise Club for example) or are you still allowed to post what you want? i ask because i rarely see mods post normal stuff in General - except for Myrth (a bit) - most of the time all i see mods post are locks & warnings

Read the sticky entitled "All about Moderators, Plus How to Become One" (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=296993).
How do I become a Moderator?

If you make helpful posts in Moderation, Technical, and anywhere else help is needed, the Mods will notice you. If you're kind, helpful, and level-headed, you may have what it takes to be a mod. When new mods are needed, you may be asked to become a Forum Mod.

Just a note: Don't ask to be a mod, that usually only hurts your chances. "Let your actions speak louder then your words."

1. I think the mods have an IRC channel in which they handle requests, but I'm not altogether sure.

2. I don't believe mods are chosen per forum.

These won't completely answer your questions, but they should help:
Glossary of Forbidden Actions (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=288255)
All About Moderators, Plus How To Become One (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=296993)

Neo beat me to it.

Yeah, sorry, I forgot to read part(most! :p) of your post. The edit I did of my post might help you. Or it might not, for that matter.

"Spamming to the point where you get deleted is known as Klamathing."
There once was a nation called Klamath, who suffered this demise, hence the term 'klamathing'.

I see other moderators post 'normally' all the time, specifically Katganistan, Frisbeeteria, Cogitation, and Myrth. There's nothing wrong with it, they're still players too.

I don't believe moderators are chosen for a specific forum. You pretty much have to have an understanding of the game as a whole, from what I can tell.

helps, cheers :)

edit:
To Klamath is to spam in a truly abominable fashion, typically involving gratuitous pages of smilies and/or dozens to hundreds of threads.

From the yes-I-remember-the-older-version-of-the-All-About-Moderators-sticky dept:

"]How Do I Become a Moderator?
If you regularly make helpful posts in the forums, especially the Technical Forum, the mods and I will notice you. Once you've established a reputation, you can let one or two moderators know that you are interested in modding. The next time we want to add more moderators, we will discuss various candidates and make a decision. If you are chosen, I will e-mail you an invitation.

You should not hassle the mods, or be too demanding: this will disqualify you. We want moderators who are interested in helping other players, and able to deal with the quite stressful job of handling large numbers of player complaints and problems without losing their cool. To become a moderator you must demonstrate that you fit that description.
Just a note: Don't ask to be a mod. It usually only hurts your chances.

Note that some of this is outdated, especially the second sentence of [violet]'s post. Also, my sources in the Mod Squad (well, really my observations and a few telling posts I've seen, but that sounds cooler) inform me that nowadays Moderation recruitment is usually done via telegram or IRC, not necessarily by e-mail.

@Neo-Anarchists:

The moderators have an IRC channel in which they handle requests (#TheModCave). The moderators also have a private IRC channel for discussing classified business that I don't know about, but it's passworded and 99.9% of NationStatesers don't know what it's called anyway. I don't know that IRC is required for modship (I'm fairly sure that Enodia never got on IRC, he said he had problems connecting when I asked him), but I've seen all of the current Administrators and Moderators on IRC, so it probably helps a lot. And let's face it, IRC is a lot of fun and if you aren't on it you should be. :p

I remember some discussions on having Moderators from various parts of the game and forums to balance out what was previously seen as an RPer-slanted Mod Squad, but given that these date from summer and fall 2003 and that the Mod Squad isn't nearly as RPer-slanted now as it was then, that's probably moot and outdated.

As for Klamath....Klamath - spam-flamed

Disclaimer: I am not a moderator and most likely will never be a moderator. My commentary here is purely unofficial and is based solely on the observations I have made as a Moderation Forum reader since August 2003 and an IRC regular since November 2003. I do not have any special sources that tell me the happenings in either Forum 1233, the Secret Mod Channel, or the Mod Centre. Anything a NationStates Moderator or Administrator says that contradicts this post should be seen as far more accurate than it.

excellent, cheers :)

and just for the record, i'm not asking to be a mod (i noticed your emphaisis in that quote ;)), i just thought up some questions ("how do you become a mod" being the foremost of them) after reading through a load of those stickies for the first time :)

on that note i will make an effort to work it out again. i'm trying to use Trillian and i have to say IRC is amazingly complicated. i'm a self-confessed geek but i can't work it out at all :(
