Why aren't they considered spam? They are really annoying and incredibly pointless.

Especially when a new one is created "every day", simply because someone is "gone"...

Without having any special insight, I'd venture a guess is that they're tolerated for the same reason that the rest of the General forum hasn't been done away with. These threads are highly indicative of what General is about: people expressing themselves freely, within the constraints of civility and tastefulness required by the site owner as enforced by the moderation staff.

Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. People like emotional stroking.
