A nation started a thread in General, the thread doesn't worry me, but the nation, is Die Capitalist Pigs. Am I the only one who thinks Capitalists might be the slightest bit offended by this?

I live in a capitalist country, and I feel not the least bit offended. It is all in the eye of the beholder ;)

Inappropriate nation names should be reported through the "getting help" page: http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/-1/page=help

Though, having a name as "Die Capitalist Pigs" is hardly a deletable offence.
What can't I post?

NS Moderation can't guarantee that no one will be offended by material on this site. If we did, we'd have to remove General and probably several other forums.

If it doesn't break one of Max's core rules in some way (as established by precendent and interpretation), it's fine. This one is fine.

And you wouldn't say that Die Capitalist Pigs is at all malicious?

Also worth noting, I didn't request him to get deleted, or even warned, I just brought it to the moderators attention.

IMO there is a difference between the two. The first is anti semitic - aimed at a partcular ethnic group - while the second is anti capitalist - aimed at a philosophical group not defined by ethnicity.

So...how about "die pro-abortionist pigs"? is that ok?
really, I'm not trying to be farcical here; I even agree with the basic idea that "die capitalist pigs" is much more acceptable than "die jewish pigs", but I'm curious about the line.
and how about if I make a puppet called "die rascist pigs" or "die nazi pigs?"

I think the way it works out is that statements about religions and nationalities are frowned upon, statements about socio-political backgrounds are more acceptable since they can be changed by the person.

Granted... I am not a mod... but let me just say, I am not offended by his nation name either... then again, I am anti-capitalist anyway (and NOONE better insinuate I am pro-communist... I dislike them more)

But anyway, I really dont think he was being Malicious in his choice of name... maybe stupid to annoy ¼ of the RP population... but not malicious.

Oh... lastly, it would be "Die Kapitalist Schweine" if you wanted to say The Capitalist Pigs in german... note, that may be slightly off, since I am not fluent in it! ^_^

Well, since no one is rising to the question, how about "Die Juden Scheine"?
it means ready to be kosher, right?
A but of feed back would be lovely.

Discriminating against ethnic origin, religion, sexual preference.. was never allowed. That are things people can't choose, you're born that way or not.

Having a politial opinion is something entirely different. That's just basic freedom of speech.

Although "DIE CAPITALIST PIGS!!!!" may be a political opinion, it doesn't seem to me a great deal different from saying "DIE, JEWISH SCUM!" or 'DIE, QUEER FREAKS!"

After careful review, we are reversing this ruling. "Die [insert group here] Pig" is considered a threatening statement under the NationStates Terms and Conditions and is therefore not allowed in national names, mottos, et cetera. Customizable national characteristics are held to a higher standard then forum posts and we wouldn't allow "Die [group] Pig" in a serious forum post. Therefore, the nation "Die Capitalist Pig" has been modbombed.

It has been pointed out that "Die" can be taken as the German word for the article "The". This interpretation is rejected; "Capitalist" and "Pig" are both in English, so "Die" is being interpreted in English.

Don't post unless you have something intelligent and/or insightful to add. Sanctaphrax was asking a question. Regardless of the answer, there is no reason to get on his case about it.

I recall a previous case... someone came to the mod-forum complaining about a thread, in which a statement was made which he considered to be a direct threath to the security of president Bush (he even quoted some law about it). I believe a mod ruled he was being overreacting, because the difference between "i'ld love to see president Bush die" and "I'm going to kill that guy".

I mean... "die capitalist pig" does not threaten anyone in particular does it? If this ruling stands as it is, lot's of nations will have to start worrying.. A commie-themed nation with a motto "So many capitalists, so little time". Or a dictatorship-nation with the motto "Death To All Who Oppose", "Crush! Kill! Destroy!" "Kneel before us, or taste a bullet" "Death to the stupid"... (these are actual motto's, just checked some random pages). are they gonna be mod-bombed too??????

"Die capitalist pig" is a specific threat against those with capitalist ideologies. The motto "Death To All Who Oppose" could be taken as an opinion of the leader of the nation, in RP'ing aspect, and really isnt a specific threat against anyone in particular. "Crush! Kill! Destroy", and "Kneel before us, or taste a bullet" could be taken in the same way as well. They aren't threats against specific people.

I can understand either way, for the motto "So many capitalists, so little time" because it does threaten capitalists; however, it doesn't specifically have the word 'die' in it.

If someone literally writes : « I’ll destroy you, filty commie pig »… that’s a real threat, he deserves to be deleted. No problem with that.

"Shoot em all and let god sort em out"
"Communism is a hammer which we use to crush the enemy."
"DEN troopers are completely superior to defender scum"
"Death to Invaders"
"Death to all fanatics!"
"you will all die"
"I kill you"
"Save a Republican, Shoot a Hippie"
I took some motto’s from capitalist, communist, republican, liberal, defender, invader, ordinary nations,.. There’s even a motto of one of the mods in that list. I ask again : Will these nations get mod-bombed?

You gotta be consistent in your rules. The FAQ says they apply to nation names, motto’s, and other customizable fields… A national animal called the "commie pig" is hardly a deletable offence, never has been. On the other hand, national animals called ****** or jew always have been out of the question (I don’t make a problem out of that, I understand discrimination, racism, anti-semitism isn’t tolerated).

I’m just stating that what has been mods practice for ages, facts I observed. The main difference between them is you can’t choose your race, sexual preference, ethnic origin… while a person chooses to be capitalist, a defender, a commie, a conservative…

No... but I have been told by the mods while on a spy mission in a nazi region that "Communist POW" is not acceptable... I dont think I got a warning for it though... I also changed to something more neutral

I can't see why everyone's getting bothered by all of this? Haven't you ppl got anything better to do. oh wait i forgot. Some of you really do take this game too seriously. I'm just playing for fun. All the time someone's gonna offend someone else. Billions of ppl, each with a different view (well a few thousand maybe). It's very difficult NOT to offend these days since PC got more grip on society. So please children, don't get all excited, it's just a game. Not real. Since when was anything realistic on the internet, eh?

Now just get on with running your invisible nation and try to have fun in your life. That's all i'm asking :)

Indeed, this is a game, not unlike baseball or football in the fact that it has rules and those who enforce the rules. Just as an Umpire may throw you out of the game for doing something illegal, a moderator can issue a warning or do a multitude of other actions when a rule is broken. Threatening nation names are illegal. This has been repeated by mods throughout this thread and is not a hard concept to grasp. Your opinion on the matter, after the mods made their ruling, becomes irrelevant. Next time you post, make sure it is in some way meaningful or worthwhile if it is outside of General. That's all I'm asking, and I doubt I'm alone.
