Über threads

Just had a thought thats probably been asked before but here goes...
I know all threads have post limits, but is it possible to have an unlimited post thread for repeat topics?
For example...the regular
Guns
Abortion
Gay Marrige etc etc
are always up, would it be possible to have überthreads for all common topics and just sticky them so there wouldn't be so many of them? I know it might have already been and idea...but it was jus a thought. :)

This would become too unwieldy, and would actually discourage people from discussing these topics as no one would wish to read through 1300 posts to make a rebuttal. Also, it assumes that no one has a fresh angle on it.
Besides, if we open that can of worms, the more serious debaters will certainly ask us to merge all the fluffle threads into one huge thread....

There are threads in Jolt Spam with over 35,000 posts, so there isn't a technical limitation. There is no rule against going over 1300 posts on non-spam threads. Several have done so.
People continue to create new topics based on the news of the moment, and the same old posts and arguments show up in the new thread as were posted in the old. That's the nature of conversation and argument. It would be a moderation nighmare to try to grab each of those new topics and merge it into one of the predetermined subcategories. We'd also end up with a page full of stickies with no room for new topics.
Impractical. Request denied.

Fair points, i really didn't think it through much, it was just seeing the same "Uk has no guns and crime has gone up...." thread for the nth time.... But I see your point. :)
