One of my puppets has a kind-of-a popular name.

There have been 11 bad login attempt(s) since your last successful login.

I know they can't guess this one, but should I be worried? Can this person be stopped?

I believe it's possible that the Mods can check the IP Address of the person doing that and investigate. In which case, they will need your puppet name.

Do you know of anyone whose nation name is really close to your puppet's? Like, for example:

Hersfold (Mine) Hersfols (Someone else's)

They might have accidentally mispelled it, and didn't realize until the 12th time. I find it a bit hard to believe that someone would be trying to hack in and risk all of their accounts, and possibly access to the site.

By the way, even if your password is as short as 4 characters, there are 87,112,285,930,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (4 to the 68th power, or 87 thousand billion billion billion) possible combinations to choose from. Even with a computer, that would take ages because of the security lockout after every 3rd try.

With 68 characters possible to choose from, there are only 21,381,376 permutations for a password containing 4 characters in total (it's 68^4, not 4^68 ;) ). That's why having just 4 characters in ones password is not enough.

I hope I am not hi jacking your thread but a nation in my region is telling me his password has been stolen and he no longer has control of his nation, Our region was emptied and all nations ejected by the person who stole the password, after getting his password back it was stolen for a second time and this time the email address deleted so the password could not be resent. after contacting moderators has been told his password is his own resposibility.

I myself had 5 bad log ins a few days ago and we are putting it down to bad feeling by thwarted invaders. Is it possible some sort of script could be used to sift through passwords?

If your pasword had only 4 characters, it would take at least 68^4/3 x 40 minutes, to find out what the password is, if you're using a script. Even a script should be blocked after the third attempt. So, if the script is extremely unlucky, it would take 223696213 minutes to find the password. That is 68^4 divided by 3 attempts and blocked for 40 minutes every third. Makes a total of 223696213 minutes (155344 days), if it is right on the last attempt. I think the average script will do it in half that time.

I agree with Ballo. You're getting a 68-symbol password of 4 distinct symbols confused with a 4-symbol password of 68 distinct symbols. The first has 4^68 combinations, the second has 68^4 combinations.

It does still rather hinge on it being done only by random characters and not dictionary words.

True. There will always be that nut somewhere out there who begins a password crack by guessing "antidisestablishmentarianism" and "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

Hey! How'd you figure out my password?!?

My password can only be copy/pasted, because it doesn't consist of western characters. That is why I am not worried, but I do wonder if this person can be stopped. I don't think that people like that enhance the gameplay of Nationstates.

huh, should use chinese, arabic or cyrilic letters (like those: Ако четете това значи или сте българи или други славяни, или сте много пияни :p ) the next time I try to crack Cassandrah's password

Do you know why it is forbidden to yell "BOMB" in an airplane?

I don't know. Look at my name - my citizens never yell "BOMB" in the airplane. They just push the button

I doubt it; all the person would have to do would be to hop onto any computer and do it to you again.

You mean you didn't know that the Mods are all psychic?
That's the special requirement that we never hear about!
