I find the use of the word "gay" in the poll as a derogatory expression to be offensive and ask that it either be edited or the thread locked.

I don't find it funny, but I wouldn't stress too much over it, considering they left Haiti off the options any-way ...

it seems to me like you are the kind of person who looks for things like this, so you can make a self-righteous stand. i agree it is inappropriate to use the word "gay" in negative manners, but i also think that if you took offense to every portrayal of homosexuality in a negative manner you must be a very offended person because it is everywhere. this instance is harmless so why don't you hop off that high horse and do something to change the use of the word "Gay" instead of whining on an online forum where no one cares

I don't seek it out, but when it presents itself I speak out against it.

And why don't you take your ad hominems to someone foolish enough to care?

I expect the mods to review my complaint, think about it, look at the rules and how they have ruled in the past and take what measure they find appropriate.

That's what "Moderation" is for, silly!

you can't be serious. the point of the poll was obviously not to offend gays...WAIT WAIT....homosexuals... it was to address a topic with a humorous tone. i think you should get a grip and suck it up. :gundge: :gundge: :gundge: :gundge:

Yeah, those smilies really make anything you say not worthy of my attention.

It may not have been the point, but it certainly is the effect. It's used in a derogatory fashion and, as such, is offensive. I support the original poster's opinion.

And your annoying smilies don't help make your point at all.

i can't see that thread as being pointedly offensive to gays by any stretch of the imagination.

Yup, those smilies still devalue anything you say.

And I am offended, not by the thread, but by the last option in the poll. Reading comprehension is a virtue.

yup, everything you say devalues everything you have to say.

you don't think it's the slightest bit unreasonable to ask for an ENTIRE thread to be locked (a thread which developed into a somewhat interesting conversation) just because of ONE WORD in the last poll option?

now i will not use smilies, not because you don't like it, but so you will not have an excuse to further pretend you can't see what i'm saying. shielding yourself behind little symbols is not making YOUR point any more valid than using them was making mine.

Did you not read the "edited or locked" part? Editing the offensive bit would do just fine, thank you.

There, there, no need to go even more juvenile.

Again, reading comprehension is a virtue. I asked that the last poll option be edited or the thread locked. Notice how I put the "edited" part first so that anyone reading that would realise that that was my primary suggestion? And notice how I used "ask" to convey the message that I was just suggesting what should be done and not demanding it?

now i will not use smilies, not because you don't like it, but so you will not have an excuse to further pretend you can't see what i'm saying. shielding yourself behind little symbols is not making YOUR point any more valid than using them was making mine.

You have said nothing beyond proving you didn't read what I wrote. And it is actually the person using the smilies that is hiding behind them. Really, that was quite the poor try.

yes, the poll option could be edited or blocked. or...you could just take it in stride, accept it for what it is (a humorous option with no offensive connotations), forget about it, and go about your life instead of hassling everybody else about it. i'd bet serious money that if you asked the original poster of that poll if they were trying to offend gays, they would say no.

You've obviously not read what he went on writing in the thread.

And I don't find it the least bit humorous to use "gay" in a derogatory manner. It is offensive and I am speaking out against it. Maybe the mods will agree, maybe they won't. However, it is still my prerogative to voice my opinion on questionable content and to bring it to their attention for further evaluation.

although what he/she wrote (scrotums, poo, etc.) was stupid, i still do not find it to be pointedly offensive to gays, because it isn't. you only perceive it that way because you dwell on it.

congratulations and good luck on your glorious crusade. the world will be a better place if the word 'gay' is deleted from that thread.

And if he had written "the ****** choice", would you still think it not offensive to black people? It is apparent by the use of the word that it is meant as derogatory. It is offensive, but it is also completely unnecessary. For him to not want to offend anyone, I really don't see why he used that particular expression.

Not the world, but it would make these forums a lot more pleasant, because it would hopefully set a standard.

Are you equating "******" to "gay"? Because the "******" choice will be blatantly talking about black people, whereas the "gay" choice means "lame." That's what the word GAY means in that context. Jesus christ, dude. If I had used "conservative" or "Christian" in a so-called derogatory manner, would you be here launching your crusade? I highly doubt it.

And equating gay with lame, you offend. It is apparent that it is made to mean "lame" bacause of homophobia. "******" wasn't always a derogatory term; people using it as such made it that way, and your using "gay" in a derogatory manner is in the same style.

If I had used "conservative" or "Christian" in a so-called derogatory manner, would you be here launching your crusade? I highly doubt it.

I doubt it as well, because being neither conservative nor christian it would not strike so close to home. But if made aware of the derogatory connotation, I would support the person who made me aware of it or would start the "crusade" myself.

The reason I would not notice it as readily is because "conservative" or "christian" usually aren't used as derogatory words. You need but go to your closest school to hear "gay" be used as an insult. And I, for one, will not stand idly by.

I think there is a misconception why the word is offensive. To be offensive one would assume that the word gay is synonymous with homosexuality. As it is not being used as a synonym for happy, lively or energetically charged then it is safe to say that the word was meant as gay=homosexual.

The problem with this is using this word in this manner implies abhorrent or less desirable behavior. As we are using the word as an equivalent to homosexual we can safely say this, based on the poll option. Homosexuality is abhorrent and less desirable.

While this might seem like a stretch of the imagination perhaps I can type the poll in another manner that might illustrate the point better.

Puerto Rico
Guam
US virgin islands
Iraq
Britain
Some holding no one knows about
Some state will carve itself up (East Virginia!)
Heaven
Hell
Other (in other words, a spic answer)

I apologize for the offensive term but perhaps you now see how this is inappropriate? By using the word gay as a term to mean unfavorable you are implying that gays show less than favorable traits.

Another common example would be to use the expression “I got jewed.” When referring to the fact that you got ripped off. This would infer that a transaction with a Jewish person is inherently less beneficial than one with a non-Jew.

This is an example of politically incorrect language. I do not believe that there was a hidden agenda to insult gays in this post but it is the same idea that we now use the words letter carrier, firefighter and chair person. Asking for compassion in this manner might seem unreasonable to the majority but it is hard for a minority as it is just another facet of the uncaring majority.

As a side note when my friends realized this rather than stopping they simply randomly insert a minority name as apposed to saying gay. Now something that is unfavorable can be anything from gay to Black to Chinese. This may be racist but it is no longer discriminatory as they attempt to use their offensiveness level handedly.

I object to your statement that this is nonsense. It is just another display of the humiliation gays are put through everyday and your belittlement of someone's attempt to try to lessen that is worthy of contempt.

If you expect to go through life protected from things you find offensive, then you are sorely naïve. This goes doubly on the internet.
