Reports to Mods: Always necessary?

I have a question. I have often been "flamed" on these forums, but never (well, hardly ever) do I respond in kind, and try to maintain a civilized tone. I have never reported these to the moderators. Is it necessary to report all flaming, trolling, etc? Or can we just deal with it ourselves? Or do the mods want to keep track of the flaming, regardless if we can deal with it ourselves?

It's all a matter of personal preference. First of all you don't want to be the boy who cried wolf, reporting everyone who looked at you the wrong way. (hard to do over the internet I know...lol)

Still, it is the responsibility of each of us to report to the mods the extreme cases of instances in which rules have been broken. The mods cannot possibly be everywhere all the time. They might miss something. No one has the right to break the rules, regardless if their "crime" is reported or not.

Thanks. One other question - what does it mean when somebody puts you on their ignore list? I really ticked off someone on the forum (I did not curse them), and they "threatened" me by saying I am now on their ignore list. I personally don't really care if I am ignored, but what is the extent? Does it mean I can't see their posts, or they can't see mine, etc?

If they're talking about telegrams, that means that you can't telegram them.

If they're talking about the forum, it means that they made a list (a guess they can't remember...) of people they will refuse to interact with. They can still see your posts, they just might leave the thread when they see you there. It's really not that big of a deal, but being on ignore lists aren't something people strive for...especially if they were ignored for a reason.

Thanks. This happened on the forum. Seemed he had a really short fuse (Chess Squares), and I wasn't really particularly trying to provoke him. Seems kind of pointless to have open debate and then just ignore people who don't agree with you, but whatever. I appreciate your help.

It's also pointless to IGNORE people in debates in general. The IGNORE tactic is one used (and often misused) during open roleplay. As you said, it seems rather pointless and pathetic to ignore someone with a valid yet different point during a debate.

...and my help is given out of the goodness of my heart. (lol) Either way, thanks for the appreciation.

You can if you desire, add people to your Ignore List. This means you cannot read their posts -- it has a little message that says "This person is being ignored" or something like it when you are looking at a post of theirs.

To add people to you ignore list:

1)Click on their name at the left of their post.
2)Select: View Profile
3) Select: Add _____ to your ignore list.

Warning: Just because some SAYS they have added you to their ignore list does not mean they actually have. Do not take the opportunity to type things they might then report to the mod team.

You youngins and your new fangled technology. Why...back in my day...our lists were in our heads.

Seriously though...you learn something new every day I guess...

;) I guess the old saw is untrue: you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

I only stumbled across that a short time before I became MODified; I have since (for reasons I am sure everyone can understand) emptied my ignore list.

So I can start filling it again?

With my apologies to my associate, Myrth, I'm going to correct him on a couple of things.

First, if you feel confident that you can deal with the situation yourself while keeping a cool, rational head on your shoulders, then you are welcome to deal with it yourself. Do not respond to abuse with abuse. Rulebreaking does not justify rulebreaking. You will be judged by your actions, not by who or what caused your actions. Do keep a link to the incident on your computer while you try to deal with the situation; if working it out by yourself doesn't work, then you will need to give us the link when you tell us what and where the problem is.

Second, if you don't feel comfortable dealing with it yourself, then you may feel free to report it to us. You are not required to report rule violations to us (that is, we're not going to punish you for not reporting an incident that we know you saw), but it is appreciated.

I've found that many of the people in General and UN often don't have "valid" points. There arguments are often made in first few posts and ignoring their later posts is hardly pointless ... it is just a way to prevent two players from continuing to throw insults back and forth.

There are exceptions and players that are capable of raising dynamic issues and keeping a debate relevant and changing. But there are also plenty of times that players aren't looking for a debate but are subtly flamebaiting.

The whole reporting stuff to the mOds thing reminds me of Kindergarden (although I never went)
