Signature issues

Signature problems... My signature was about 400 or 450 characters, and had many links to it. the name and then it all suddenly just vanished... What happened?

I should like to add the size of what was left was also edited. I did not do this. How could it happen?

Never mind, must have been a glitch, I fixed it though, this can be deleted or locked, no issue anymore.

Actually it was edited for it's excessive size and the fact that all the links can be found using the egosearch 'find all threads started by this user' function. Please attempt to keep your sig reasonably sized.

I should like to point out that most of the links I had in there were to threads that folks that are new to the game might not otherwise see and would never come across.

Other examples of large signatures.

http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/member.php?u=101090 (decent sized one) People can find their way to Earth II by searching for his posts, just as they can find their way to Earth DA by that logic of "post finding".

http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/member.php?u=103186 (another fairly decent sized one)

My search of the forum turned up some signatures about as large as mine, and many smaller, but all shared a fundamental point, links to critical threads that nobody would stumble across unless they were looking for them.

My alliances can't grow if new comers don't know about them.

Oh, and the find threads only shows you threads from so far back, I believe 7 pages of threads, for a total of 100 or 150. I have more threads than that. And thus, it facilitates the need to have links for people to be able to access the threads.

A couple of links in small text is acceptable, but enormous sigs are visually disruptive to threads they are posted in. A mod decision some time ago recommended sigs be no bigger than eight lines and noted that those larger than that may be edited, though it'd take some digging to find that.

Be better if it was size=0. Really, keeping sigs reasonably sized [and not using dozens of shooting smileys in them, for that matter] is a matter of basic netiquette.

TH, you have a very -visible- signature, not one that takes up half a page. There is a decided difference in what you have done there, and what Decisive Action previously had in his, in my personal opinion. Neither one of his examples even came close. Although in retrospect, I'd agree with GMC on the small size fonts for the other text and links, just to save on space. It does end up keeping things looking more neat - personal pref I suppose.

A suggestion for those who have many links that they would like to have up for people is to put them in a line with spaces between them - more room that way - or to put up a single link to an ooc post in which you keep a current listing of all your threads. Nice, neat, to the point, and thorough, with never a need to have OMG HUGE sigs with continuous lists.

In a thread like that you can have all the links, a detail of what each rp involves, etc. I would think that to be a much more efficient and informative way of showing people what you have to offer. Your mileage of course, may vary.

I see what you guys mean... but the small text hurts my eyes. I made my smaller to test it out, and I tried it at size 0, but it was too hard to read for me, and size 1 wasn't too big of a difference. Nathi, the idea about using hyphens is brillant, I wonder why I never thought of that! Thanks for the feedback! I like my new signature much better, hehe.

8 lines eh? I can manage that...

I am perfectly happy with my signature

One link to an OOC post is the best way to go. All other links tire me, when I want to join the conversation. Size 1 doesn't bother me one bit.

and neither is The Phoenix Milita's...

Meh, I cheat. I use keywords for certain threads (such as a name unique to them) that I can give people searching for them. That's part of why I make up so many names for my characters.

Oh, and I like my sig. It's short enough to not be distracting while containing loads of information.

Mine too? Since DA has some personal vandetta against me obviously he's going to cite mine as a problem.

I don't believe this thread was intended as a 'tattletale' thread for the sig police to come rat out 'offenders'. The situation has been addressed and there really isn't a need to continue with it unless folks have questions about signatures that have not been answered.

None of the examples offered here have been even near what Decisive Action's signature was, even those he chose to include in his defense, by even half. He has done a nice job of editing it so as to include the information he wants without taking up half a screen to do so - I'd say it's all good.

Signatures I think will always be for the most part, a matter of opinion. I have seen several out there I personally find obnoxious, but that I don't think actually crosses the line on the accepted 'rule' that has been stated here. While I do not see the point in ginormous sigs, I realize that for some, it is a matter of flair and personal style as much as anything, regardless of content. Opinions on whether or not said styles work or ought to be used will by nature, vary. If you truly do not wish to see signatures, there is I believe a setting in your profile section that will block them, and imbedded pictures and a number of things. Your profile options are surprisingly customize-able.

PS - personal pref? Yes, Layarteb, using some of the previously-mentioned solutions would probably serve you well. Smaller font, or lay out your links on one line rather than a return for each. Again, just an opinion.

Couldn't you place those links next to each other, with a little line between them? The way it looks now, it is 10 times bigger than most posts in this forum.

It's organized nicely and easy to read, very easy to read and it isn't very long either. It's pretty compact.

Not really, I just wanted to cite somebody else who has their own Earth to manage and thus needs their Earth link in their signature. I have no vendetta against you.

We're not going to turn this thread into a pissing match but "Yeah right."

Anyhow I have to agree with you, you need your Earth link in the sig or else how are people going to know. Not everyone does the search and it's a 180 second delay between them.

500 character limit = 500 characters, not the amount of lines, especially if it's neat and organized.

You call that compact? There is 75% of empty space, on every line, in it. I call that "Not able to make compact signatures" :p

What's easier to distinguish?

Different links neatly placed on the every line or a single line of links with | separating them. It's easier on the eyes this way, a lot easier.

And, as suggested earlier, even more neat and easy and informative would be to have One Thread with all of your links in it, and a more detailed summary of them all. Just a thought. I know I've seen folks do that one more than once. No need for clicking all the various links, just hit one, and get everything they need to know about you.

Word to the wise, however, the mods often get upset with compilation threads, depending upon how you set them up.

Indeed I have thought about that but using the logic I use for websites, the less clicks, the less confusing, and the easier it is.

Signature -> Link = 1 click
Signature -> Post -> Link = 2 clicks +

Plus it's right out there.

EARTH II
Storefront
...

Out of sight out of mind is a good concept. Therefore, it works for the inverse. We're only looking at a 10 line signature there without quotes or this or that, little formatting except the quote.

Also if someone needs a direction to Earth II or my storefront or something I just say, "See my signature!" And walla, they are there...

Placing someone on ignore, based on their signature isn't exactly the most logical thing.

You could just choose not to view signatures all together if they bother you that much. (Profile --> Edit Options --> Show Signatures)

The only pet peeve I have with signatures is when people put quotes in them. I really don't know why people put quotes into sigs; you could just link to the post you want to quote. I also don't like it when someone's sig is longer than their average post.
