Are NS moderators ovezealous at times?

I don't think so. I personally haven't seen them take any action unless something got out of hand.

Okay...

Under Wiki's definition trolling is...

On the Internet, troll is a slang term used to describe:

A person who makes posts (on newsgroups or other forums) that are solely intended to incite controversy or conflict, or cause annoyance or offense.

A post that is intended to incite controversy or cause offense. (Many posts may inadvertently cause strife as collateral damage, but they are not trolls.)

Wouldn't this preclude pretty much any topic that might be controversial, whether it's politics, abortion, etc?

I'm finding it difficult to see what your point is... first you ask if mods are overzealous, then you define trolling... I am missing the connection.

First of all, I didn't anticipate, nor did I necessarily desire, a mostly "moderator" response to the question.

Second, I've seen threads shut down for 'trolling', when it was mostly people debating a controversial topic. Sure, there were a couple of name-callers in there, but the rest of the people seemed to be enjoying themselves.

As is usually said when one of the mods locks a topic for excessive spamming, it's because Jolt has it's own little forum set aside just for that particular purpose. I don't really see the point of this thread, except to give Myrth a chance to act almighty... well, even more almighty... whatever.

When it gets out of hand and becomes nothing more than a flame fest, that's when the thread gets locked.

Isn't there a way to 'ignore' or 'block' people?

Yes, and you're welcome to exercise that function when it suits you. It is, however, the function of the moderators to keep things relatively civil on the boards. There was nothing civil about the direction that thread was going.

To me, that seems to be the most sensible thing to do. Allow people who want to debate to do so, and let the others be 'ignored'.

Any thread that has Nazi comparisons in the title is bound to get out of hand sooner rather than later.

Theres a difference between JoltSpam, and ye olde Forum 7. JoltSpammers spam without any form of content, mostly for the purpose of getting a big fat post counts, making mostly threads like "Keep this thread at the top!", which is somewhat fun for a few posts, but gets boring pretty fast. Forum 7ites make threads that are for the purpose of having fun, not postcounts, such as "GIVE US OUR MAGICAL POWERS!" Threads like that have much more content, and keep your interest much longer.

Let's see, so far they've deleted hackers, crackers, spammers, lamers, flamers, trolls, and terrorists. A few innocent people as well, but they've had the good sense to reconsider in those cases.

In short, no, they're not overzealous.

Heh...you should have seen the General Forum in the days before the Ruling....the Volcano, the Eternal Thread, the Last One To Post Here Wins...the general insanity.

"Forum 7" was just a faint echo of those earlier (in/)glorious times.

I didn't even get to see much of Forum 7. I discovered it and a week later it was gone. :(

Yeah, sometimes they are a little quick with the lock. But it's their call to make, so I won't debate with them about it :) I expect the same from the forums where I'm administrator of.
