Mandatory Spelling checkers

I want to get the mods' opinion on having certain players run their posts through a spelling checker before they post so its legible. I have this problem with a few players (and their horrible spelling), and my brain hurts when I finish reading the page. The horrible spelling is just getting annoying.

1) English is not the first language of everyone here.
2) We are not going to moderate grammatical errors and spelling.
3) Irony is very underrated. ;)

1) that's true. I forgot about that. This is one of the only international sites I'm on.
2) I'm not asking for a Nazi spellchecker, just some known horrible misspellers such as [name removed] and [name removed]
3) lol. Yeah, I fixed it.

I mean Nazi spellchecker as someone who goes out there to find one misspelling in an entire thread, not Nazi as National Socialist. No offense (even though I don't like Nazis, can't forgive them for what they did when I had many family members fight the Nazis)

Why not just encourage the use of a spellchecker before posting. It'd be alot easier than adding that much more code, and if someone doesn't want to use it, its not mandatory.

Question: :gundge: what is this\what does it mean?

Mandatory spell checkers is the first step towards Dictatorship and censorism. I wish you much wisdom in your future.

I make my own quotes, thank you ;)

Sestinas docent get the idea that a demurs people argue. If that keeps on consider your salves compliantly ignored.

There's a nice bit of illegible text run through Word XP's spellchecker, with the first suggested words selected. Makes even MORE sense now, eh?

Sometimes I can't resist the urge to correct spellings. Mostly in topic titles. :p

If someone posts in Moderation with what appears to be a legitimate request for help, I will do my best to understand it. Having said that, if a post is completely illegible, then there is nothing I would be able to do. Ultimately, it is in the interests of the individual wishing to bring something to our attention to make themselves clear.

We have a forum bot, created by a frenchman. I could make you mod there. The bot drives you crazy with her spelling and sentence errors :headbang:

What about leet spelling?

Can't run that through a spell checker, now can you?
Actually, that's just a minor programming problem. Take your ordinary spellchecker and add a leet translation parser. Words not recognized as standard English are scanned for the presence of leet letters and spellchecked again "6" becomes "G", "/\/" becomes "N", "\/\/" becomes "W", "4" becomes "A", and so on.

"Think about it for a moment." ;)

It is a trivial problem, of course. There are sites online which will translate English into leet and vice versa. That does not mean that we will go that far in our quest to maintain good customer service, however. :p

Why would we need a translator? No one said we couldn't read it -- ;) just that we were not inclined to bother.

Yet another error. It should be "it's." "It's" is the contraction for "it is" while "its" is the possessive form of "it."
Just a comment.

Yeah, I know I misspell some things from time to time, but I mean only a few players (IE: [name removed]) have mandatory spelling checks before they post so the above type of post does not happen.

Just for laughs, I ran [name removed]'s NSwiki nation post through MS Word. No spelling errors. None.

Also no punctuation, no capital letters in the right place, caps in the wrong place, misused words etcetera, etcetera. His heart's in the right place, but he probably never had a proper teacher.

It makes no difference how you wish to enforce it, you're simply not going to make some posts more readable without massive editing or a continuous drip IV of Strunk & White's Elements of Style (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/020530902X/qid=1098415810/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-5963390-4654322). It's just not gonna happen, so either ignore it or learn to live with it.

If we force people to have mandatory spelling checks, should we also enforce what fonts people are and are not allowed to use, what opinions (non-flame) are allowed to be written, and that every Tuesday shall be worship the female moderators as goddesses day?

Or should we continue to leave you all in the least restrictive environment possible? ;)

You may repeat yourself as often as you like; it's not going to change OUR position. However, in the Nazi Spell and Grammar Check world you envision, as both Jjuulliiaann and I have pointed out, you too would be in the doghouse.

Enough. We don't use moderation threads to make fun of other people's spelling foibles.
