The 4 letter "F" word

Gothic Kitty

I understand that game rules have not been changed. So far, so good, but have forum rules changed? I have done some reading in the Jolt forum, and I noticed that the 4 letter "F" word is widely abused in conversation. Lol, some of the members have it even in their signatures. I hate to be blamed for starting it up, but are Jolt rules any different here in the NS forum?
Myrth
18-07-2004, 13:50
Speaking personally, I'd allow it in conversation as long as it is not directed at anyone so as to become flaming. Signatures, I'd say no and would edit them out.
I will bring this up with the other moderators, however, before I take any action.

Of course, this is all subject to being overruled by a higher power.

I personally think that starring curses is ridiculous. Everyone knows what you mean and it achieves nothing, so realistically a word censor is pointless. Same for beeping on radio edits.

Think of this scenario:
Person says 'f' word on forum
Child reading forum sees 'f' word
Child starts saying 'f' word everywhere
Parents wash child's mouth out with soap for saying 'f' word

Think: do you want that to happen? THINK OF THE CHILDREN READING THE FORUM!

Or better yet, add a COPPA restriction. By the time you turn 13, you should prolly already know about the 'f' word. But foreigners might not. Try to avoid saying the 'f' word.

Person advocates a political stance on the forum.
Young person reading forum sees political stance described.
Young person advocates political stance everywhere.
Authority figures punish the young person for their beliefs & actions based on that stance.

Difference?

In your scenario who is being unreasonable: the original poster, the child, or the parents?

I always assumed that people who, for some reason, cannot stand the sight or sound of the word 'fuck' were retarded or something. Surely unless I'm directing it at you in some kind of invective, it's not actually doing you any harm.

If I really want to offend people, I have a hundred ways of doing so using words that, out of context, are quite harmless. I really don't see why any word should be offensive when not used in an offensive context.

So, in conclusion: Fuck fuck fuckity fuck.

No, actually it's old English and is in fact an acronym..

F - forced
U - unlawful
C - carnal
K - knowledge

Which amounts to rape.

Granted that's not how it is generally used any more.

No it's not, it's a corruption of the German 'fokken,' an imitative sound for hitting [presumably developed in the sense that 'bang' is used now].

Bah, you're right.. my version was a myth..lol one I might add that I have foolishly believed for a long time..Ah well

[Fuck] is a very old word, recorded in English since the 15th century (few acronyms predate the 20th century), with cognates in other Germanic languages. The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang (Random House, 1994, ISBN 0-394-54427-7) cites Middle Dutch fokken = "to thrust, copulate with"; Norwegian dialect fukka = "to copulate"; and Swedish dialect focka = "to strike, push, copulate" and fock = "penis". Although German ficken may enter the picture somehow, it is problematic in having e-grade, or umlaut, where all the others have o-grade or zero-grade of the vowel.

Sorry, about that my response seemed a bit harsh.

Since I made it, however, I have been trying to think of any acronyms that would have existed in the middle ages. The Greek Jesus/fish one is the only one I can really think of right now, but I am sure there are some other Latin ones that I have forgotten. As far as medieval english goes, though, I'm drawing a complete blank.

I agree with the second part. You may speak whenever you want, but say what you want, might bring this site down to a flamefesting, garbage spitting children's playground, and I'll be out in a jiffy. Freedom is nice, but when it gets abused, the fun is over. You may simply go play another game, but you would have destroyed a perfectly good game for thousands of others.
Now I think of it, it isn't even logicall to speak whenever you want. If you yell "BOMB!" during flight of an airplane, you'll be thrown in jail. Try yelling "FIRE!" in cimema, for instance. You are thrown out so fast, you'll never know what happend :p

I've never liked the word fuck. Its far too common from being over-used. I made my own pair which I apply depending on how I am expressing myself. That, and, I occasionally develop a british accent. So they can occasionally come out that way to the listener/s any-way ...

1) " Fluck "

Example : " I don't give a flying fluck about foot-ball "

2) " Fock "

Example : " And you can fock off the misguided sarcasm already "

* Fluck is usually used only after " flying " but my also come before " 'em ".

* Fock may be turned into " focked " as in " They'll be focked before they get my vote "
