I got a warning cuz part of my nation title was "Scumwhore" and how it was offennsive and thus it got deleted. First: both words are in the dictionary, second are there whores out there who are offended by being called "scum" and vice versa? Its a made up bloody word, who decides that its offensive? This is another case of PC madness, shame on u NS mods!

Immagine that half of your population are women, and that they have to live in a country with that name. It degrades women, and it is not a normal nation's name, don't you think?!

Who said it had anything to do with women?!?!?
Also as for the "think of the women in ur nation" at end of the day its my nation, thats the whole point of the game! Yet Iv seen "fascist" and "nazi" in several nation names!

My point is the word whore doesnt discriminate and thus I dont see how it can be offensive to any1 in particualr! The whole point of NS is for ur Nation to be YOUR Nation, and while I can see how certain names can cause offence, this is just P.C bull! A reply from a mod would be nice, or even a telegram that I could reply to!

1) There are school groups on here. If one honestly has no idea why "scumwhore" is offensive, it does not speak much to his maturity or intelligence.
2) Max has decided, as site owner, that there will be a certain level of decorum and
3) His moderators are, along with [violet], the ones who decide in his absence what is offensive.

Correct.

Additionally, national names, titles, mottos, and such cannot be debated because you can't stick a note onto someone elses nation to dispute it. Forum posts can be debated merely by replying to the post. Hence, National names, titles, mottos, currencies, and animals are held to stricter standards than forum posts.

Macewan, if this gets used by schools, god help us. If one takes offense at the use of the word whore when used in such a loose meaning, blablabla I wont bother questioning ur intelligence, I'll leave that to you. Its a bit immature.
The hypocricy of this is unbelievable, there are nations with names which have much worse connotations, and theyre allowed becuase..............?
I cant be bothered arguin about this anymore, I was hopin for a mod to at least dignify a genuine inquiry, but as usual its been hijacked by asskissin wannabe mods lookin to score brownie points.

They're not allowed, but they may still exist because we don't know about them.

Care to give me a few names?

Nope. If I find something offensive, I just dont look at it again. Its a simple but effective method and should be used more often by some of the more sensitive people who use NS rather than going moaning to a mod about 10 different nations every day! I dont know how my name got flagged but I know for a fact there are a few people from my region who would care to give you a few names. Ta for yer time Cogitation, I appreciate your replies, but I still dont agree with it.

Yet Iv seen "fascist" and "nazi" in several nation names!I've not been here long but all the uses of the terms "fascist" and "nazi" I've seen here have been blatant satire. The term "scumwhore" really doesen't strike me as such. I don't find it particuarly offensive (it's just, with respect, somewhat juvenile) but it really doesen't strike me as a major violation of your human rights to be asked to pick another name.

So if I call sum1 a "politcal whore" its ok? Its justified by whether its satire or not? Its got nothin to do with human rights, its NS rights to being an individual and creating MY nation. The reason it was removed because it was "offensive", u urself said u dont find it particularly offensive.
As for the schools aspect, if theyre old enough to be creating their own regions/nations /laws and understanding the consequences of their daily decisions, Im sure seeing the word "scumwhore" isnt going hurt their young minds.

There has been an :official moderator: response from Cogitation already confirming that the term is not appropriate. There has been confirmation that there are schools who use this in their classes in order to teach economics, politics and diplomacy. There are pages arguing "freedom of speech" to which the answer has been: http://www.nationstates.net/pages/faq.html#etiquette

Max Barry, [violet] and the Moderators have not changed their policies in the past; they seem unlikely to do so in the future.

So if I call sum1 a "politcal whore" its ok? Its justified by whether its satire or not? And that would be satire how exactly? Its got nothin to do with human rights, its NS rights to being an individual and creating MY nation. When you use terms like "another case of PC madness" and "shame on you NS mods" it does sound like you somehow feel oppressed. The reason it was removed because it was "offensive", u urself said u dont find it particularly offensive. I don't personally- I've been on the net long enough to be immune to adolescent shock tactics. I can understand why others might (I think your claim that "whore" isn't gender specific shows a distinct lack of understanding of the lingustic roots of the word). And I actually think the rights of those players not to feel uncomfortable outweighs your right to call yourself "Scumwhore"
As for the schools aspect, if theyre old enough to be creating their own regions/nations /laws and understanding the consequences of their daily decisions, Im sure seeing the word "scumwhore" isnt going hurt their young minds.Look at it another way. Do you think that NS is a valuable resource for secondary/high school students studying politics? Would you fancy justifying your chosen name to a Board of Governer's meeting if you were a teacher?

I didnt say it was satire, it was simply another example of how it could be used. Would it be considered as offensive?

Yes I do feel a bit oppressed.

Its nothing to do with shock tactics, its "patter" that gets used locally. Thus helps my region reflect my area. If U wish to get snotty and criticise how juvenile it is, then fine go ahead.

Yes I understand "the linguistic roots" but we have moved on from the dark ages and it is used in wider ranges of uses today and it can be used to decsribe both sexes and has various applications.

Holy: so the word whore makes u feel uncomfortable? Your discomfort outweights my right to reflect my nation? fine, dont bloody look at it! rather than moan and give me grief, why not just click off the page?

Also if I was a Governor on the board, I couldnt bloody well blame the teacher for what someone on the otherside of the world calls their nation!

NS is made for serious RPGers, and for people like myself who check in on it every couple of days for nation and regional developments, thats the whole point of NS; U can play it how you like!

Don't feel oppressed: the same standards are applied equally to everyone.

Look at it this way: if you walked into someone's property and called their mom a scumwhore, I think you could expect to be shown the door. This is Max's property. Rather than showing you the door, you've been asked to behave civilly.

Since Max Barry reached out and made it available to schools and educators, NS is for educational purposes as well. Eleven year olds do not need to see certain kinds of language. Their parents and educators don't need to see it either.

There is no point in continuing to complain that it's not fair that you should have to change in order to accomodate the comfort level of others while on here: that's what anyone who uses the site agrees to in the TOS.
