Well, I would figure many find a simple "homosexual" or hell, even "gay" slightly more suitable then "faggot", FWS. I would assume one must look at the context of the comment too,

Put do you have a problem with a militant gay group marching up and down the street chanting "10% is not enough... Recruit Recruit Recruit." (10% of the nation is gay and they often will go find troubled kids who are confused and try to talk them into experimenting with homosexuality)... The faggots are truly sick and disgusting... They are after your children...

I dunno I've never been able to find out but my usage guide prefers it to 'straight' although both terms do suggest that those who are different are wrong. Maybe we should come up with a new word…
