First Thing Game thread in General

I think this is the right forum for this, but if not, just move it or delete it or whatever.

My question is, why did you lock this thread, Cogitation? I'm not complaining or anything, just wondering. It seemed to be just another word game (although I will admit I didn't read it in it's entirety).

We are cracking down on word games, post games.. "pubs" and the like. General is for discussion. We will be cracking down on "last one to post here" threads as well as "Do any thing to the person above you" and other threads that hold no meaningful substance other then to just up post counts and waste the bandwidth.

Will there be an official announcement like the earlier Ruling on the General Forum about this?

wasting bandwidth? how is socialising with other people in a non-argumentative fation (sp?) considered wasting?

Ah, I see. Well, what a shame. I understand, of course, but the word games were a fun way to pass the time while I was waiting for someone to show me the error of my arguments on the substance threads. :D

I have seen dozens of word game threads. Their content is minimal and repetitive. People listing colours. People replying to monosyllabic answers with nonsensical questions. People messing about with sentence structure. It is just an easy way of boosting postcounts, as evidenced by the relatively small number of people who indulge in such pursuits.

Word games are not chat, nor are they debate. They are Spam Lite. Increasingly also a vector for channelling Forum 7 silliness into the General Forum. Of all the content on these forums, word games are the next most painless thing to sacrifice.

so what exactly do you have against the bars, clubs, and pubs then?

As far as I am aware, the usual rule of a lock at 65 pages applies to designated chat threads. Threads consisting of post-whoring are now subject to a renewed crackdown, due to the recent massive increase in such content.

The O'Railey Tavern in General was locked after 3 pages. there was no flaming, flambaiting, spaming, w/e going on. just another chat thread. i think it was Steph who locked it.

If it is post-whoring, it is lockable.

Well, you see what I would consider to be 'chat' is a discussion much like this one. Two or more people discussing something. Swapping exclamations in leet and punctuating everything with several smilies is postwhoring, my definition of which is a large number of content-light posts aimed more at raising postcounts than communication. It is not quite spamming, because there is some communication, but if the content is minimal, if the thread has nothing to redeem it, then it is fair game.

Nothing new there either, I remember the days (last summer) when it was colloquially called Normacking, after the player who clocked up 11000 posts and then had them knocked down to 7000 after the Mods got tired of it. A lot of his friends were similarly affected, they lost hundreds or thousands. It was not long after that that the General Forum Ruling was passed, aiming for some sort of regulation of chat threads. This has broken down in the last few weeks, and we are having to repeat that tough policy.

I realise that a lot of players are encountering this for the first time, but we do have to prune things a bit to keep the server going. The alternative is the server grinding and making life impossible for everyone. Again, late last year there were times when I and others I know could not get anything to work for days, until a purge was done. And people were not happy about it then either, but it was necessary.

Heh, me, the creator, didn't even notice it was locked.

I'll make note of this new rule; sorry.

You are just deleting wordgames for no good reason then?

Will they be back with jolt or NS2?

As the creator of the "Stupid Answer, Stupid Question" thread, I disagree. They challenge you to think, using words. Mensa recommends games as a means of keeping your intellect sharp. Isaac Asimov, Mensa member of long standing, played word games and logic games everyday.

No doubt you believe your motives to be noble, but virtually everyone who posts in such things is doing it for one thing only. A quick silly way of raising their post count. They even remark on this being the case with astonishing regularity.

then simply put a warning at the beginning of each thread that post-whoring will not be tolerated :)

I don't have a clue why a high post count is seen as something positive. I'm a mod at another forum and we regularly prune our board to get rid of old threads.

On edit: There's a joined date listed close to the member nation name so that should give people an inkling whether someone is a newbie of not.

Um... it's not. I probably have the highest post count on the site, yet most of my posts are multi-paragraph and in the RP area. Hell, it doesn't matter that much what your post count is.
