Forum Bans

The Apparent Autarchy

Just to clarify before I do lock this thread...

Forum Bans (not to be confused with Forum IP Bans) aren't always permanent. Oftentimes, a Forum Ban is only a week or two, however, there is minimal presidence for this, as it isn't used very frequently. Generally people either shape up, or are bad enough to warrent a straight-up deletion.

Forum Bans are generally used like a parent might use a "time out". It's a forced cool down period.

Forum IP Bans, for what it's worth, are a punishment that's a step beyond being deleted. Deleting kills one nation. Forum Banning bans one nation. Forum IP Bans ban, obviously, an entire IP address. It's just short of a full-fledged IP Ban.

And, in case you're wondering, [reploidproductions], [violet], and [dredd] can hand out Forum IP Bans. [violet] and [dredd] are the only ones who can do IP Bans. Any Game Moderator can issue a Forum Ban.

I've pulled this out of another thread because it interested me but I respect the request not to hijack the thread.

Hack's post tells me a lot i didn't know about bans, so of course i have more questions.
If Forum Banning bans one nation, then why would a new nation, like the one in Mustopia's question, be deleted?
If this nation was deleted because the old nation had received a Forum Ban, i.e. deletion of any nation belonging to that person, how is this different from a Forum IP Ban?
And if a Forum IP Ban is different from a full IP Ban, what IS a nation permitted to do? Exist in a region but not to go near the forums, presumably?

The reason i'm asking all this because of another completely different nation i have concerns about.

Forum Bans, because of how they are implimented, can only be done to a single nation. The punishment, however, is to the player, not the nation. Using a puppet to avoid the ban defeats the purpose of the ban, which is why it is a deletable offence.

If this nation was deleted because the old nation had received a Forum Ban, i.e. deletion of any nation belonging to that person, how is this different from a Forum IP Ban?

Forum IP Bans are generally permanent for one. Also, they're often used as a stop-gap measure until a full IP Ban can be implimented. Forum IP Bans were used against the Michael Jackson spammer because [violet] wasn't online.

And if a Forum IP Ban is different from a full IP Ban, what IS a nation permitted to do? Exist in a region but not to go near the forums, presumably?

Pretty much. They can do everything a normal nation can do, with the exception of access the forums. So, UN stuff, issues, regional stuff, off-site regional boards, etc. etc. etc.

Thank you Hack, for your replies.

Presumably a forum-banned nation who still exists in a region CAN access the forums, i mean physically, if they choose to ignore the fact they were banned?
it isn't an automatic thing done by the game itself, they have to be spotted by a mod first?
the nation i have concerns about hasn't actually done anything wrong this time. well yet.

Do you mean they can access, as in can view, or do you mean can just ignroe the ban and carry on posting.

I believe they can do neither. The ban effects a nation, and therefore they will probably get a 404 error or "You are banned" message when they click the forum link. but hey, I dont know.

Nope. A Forum Ban isn't just "Don't come on for a week," it keeps the nation from accessing. We actually do "something" to the nation. They can't even view the forum when signed in to their nation.

Like everything (aside from auto-word-replacement [ie: " goat "]) everything is actually done by the mods.

the nation i have concerns about hasn't actually done anything wrong this time. well yet.

As long as someone doesn't do anything wrong, everything's all sunshine and lollipops.

Sorry to gid this thread up again. I tried posting on my original thread (was in the puppet of Musetopia), but the thread vanished!?!

The nation I was originally referring to appealed against the permanancy of the forum ban. This appeal was unsuccesful (I don't know the reasons why, but I'm not here to appeal against that decision.)

However, following this appeal, their most recent nation was deleted, despite not having broken the forum ban.

I would be very grateful if a Mod could investigate the reasons for this, to prevent a repeat.

Please TM me for details, as I'd rather not start gossip and bitching by posting the details publically.

Thanks

Forgive me if I'm shooting off my mouth without being aware of the facts, but it seems to me that if a forum-banned player (whether permanently, impermanently or semi-permanently banned) made another nation to do anything on the forums, that's breaking the ban. Forum bans apply to the player, rather than the 3000 spare nations the player has lying about, do they not?

No problem :)

That was my point though.. this newest nation DIDN'T interact with the forums, yet was deleted anyway following the rejection of the appeal.

"the 3000 spare nations the player has lying about, do they not?"
I would have thought that no. was a little low . . .

M'eh, first number that came into my head. Perhaps I should've gone over all Weird Al and used 27.

Dont suppose at any stage the mods will run a check to see how many puppets there are?
I know it wouldnt be too accurate what with AOhelL and all, but even a rough figure would be interesting.

Just out of curiousity, what is the largest number of nations controlled by a single nation? I'm not looking for a name, just a number.

National Stalinist griefer probably had the most.

Well over 200, all in the UN. Probably weren't simultanious, but...

Almost all of them were in the UN simultaneously, Hack. They weren't all griefing at once - he was sort of running them in batches of 50-80odd - but they were all UN members at once.
