I'm sure most of you are aware that there seems to be a rather high number of nations being 'hacked' lately. For those of you who don't regularly check the News, I suggest you do.

First of all: THERE HAVE BEEN NO ACTUAL HACKS. A very unscrupulous player (now DEAT and IP banned, with sterner measures to follow) tricked a very large number of players via offsite forums she was an admin on. Unfortunately, many players used the same password for these offsite forums that they do for their nation, and the aforementioned player exploited a loophole in the Proboards forums to access the passwords of those users.

Secondly: Some steps to take to prevent something like this happening to you.
-NEVER use your nation's password on a forum or other service, especially if it's a forum run by another player
-If you are currently a member of any offsite forum and used your nation password for your forum login, immediately change your nation's password to something totally different
-Make sure your password is not something easy to guess or crack by brute force. A good password is:
-At least 8 characters long
-A mix numbers, upper and lower case letters, and assorted punctuation.
-Not a word in ANY language

How do you know that said player got the passwords from his/her offsite forum? Was it a pattern, such as all the players from that forum had their nations stolen, that you noticed? And did said victims get their nations back?

Also a side note, the 'hacker' most likely will access his/her forums from another computer, and strike again from another computer. Stay vigilant.

My guess would be a report to her ISP. Hacking is a serious crime that can be very gravely punished. Like having your Internet service removed. Whatever the ISP decides to do.

But it's not hacking, it's more.. creative.

Creative or uncreative hacking...it's still hacking. She tricked the players into joining an offsite forum and then stole thier passwords, using them for their nations.

...Even if the people shouldn't have used their nation passwords and came up with new passwords... :lol: :roll: :lol:

It might be that they will report her to her forum provider.

It is not hacking. Most computer security compromises are achieved by tricking people into revealing access information or stealing it from an insecure location. Actually breaking into the server and getting access to nation files would require a degree of sophistication vastly in excess of what anyone but a true expert could hope to achieve. And hitting an online bank would be a far more productive use of their talents.

True, I suppose for this instance the better word to use may be cracker, a somewhat less professional hacker. Lots of people can crack, not so many hack. *hehe*

these hacks are not over, no where near it. I tlak to these people on AIM and they are still in NS im not sure how as i know IP masks wont allow you to access NS (No i have not tried it). Also, I am still trying to rally anyone who has been hacked, but many nations are still lost and we are not sure who is a hacker anymore. If the IP ban has been initiated it is definetly not working because we lost a region just a few hours ago due to the same hacker. I am the rightful owner of grazon and i lost him while trying to save other nations that were getting hacked (like i said i talk to these guys on AIM and the like to gloata about getting passwords) Talk to allegra17 about this. I am wondering if thier is anyway of getting grazon back in my control. If not i understand due to security risks.

Still, it's a good idea not to use your nation's password for any off-site forum or other program, especially if it's run by another player.

There are no hacks. Easily guessed passwords or passwords stolen through clever trickery, yes. Hacks? No. We are well aware that these shmucks are still in NS, and are in the process of tracking them down. At the moment, due to the massive number of nations who have had passwords stolen, we are deleting the stolen nations as soon as we are made aware of them. They may be restored after the immediate problem is resolved, but it can be quite difficult to prove ownership.

While these griefers seem to be hell-bent on trying to bring Nationstates down, I want to reiterate that this is only a moderate inconvenience and not the end of the world or the apocalypse of Nationstates. However, it does prove why you should be very paranoid with your passwords, as they can and will be stolen by unscrupulous players.

The trick with the admin thing is a bit complicated. I will let you all know how it works. First off you can be a global moderator or an admin to get what you need. ok this is it.... When you modify a profile you can only change there password, not see it. So the way us low life genusis thought, was change the e-mail to something of ours then user there login name and do the "lost password" thing. then you recive the e-mail and BAM you got there pass. This only worked with a few nations, hence the Moderators not being hacked.

I have stolen many nations off of people.
Cidonia, Old Carthage, Grazon, Toored, ect...
I was the theif and LBM was the spy

Also the nation "Reformed Germany" I only gave him some nations of mine but he still finds it fun to flame and piss off the mods.

Faxlandu... he was Grazon before I hacked him. You could check the start up IP, it would match his.
Toored.... is still Toored2, I didn't take that.
Old Carthage, was an inactive USSR nation (not sure of owner)
Cidonia, well someone sent me some Telegrams about me hacking it but the nation is deated now.

So before this nation is Deated with the rest of me. I am just letting you know that some people like Fax and Toored2 should get there nations back. They were only deated because of my and RG flaming and spamming, on purpose.

I am the last of the "hackers" LBM is IP banned and Reformed Germany is quiting with me. Well it has been fun since day one when I joined NS, and I know many nations of NS thought of me as someone who made this game worth while, making up side regions and plaguing war on the main region. It kept the players active and everyone had a good time.

Fax/Grazon, Remember when I was recruited by toored? I used the name VolumeSeven, and then I beleave it was Reploid that revived my first ever nation "TheCokeMan". The old days man.... tradeing Coke for Enterthefist and bam I got my name. Now look at me... deated on sight, no use of starting up again. Well I guess I am leaveing you with a peace of NS history. Me and LBM made the news section and I am satisfied enough. I know I have been plagueing NS for about 2 weeks now with Nation Stealing but I guess my time is up.

Well hey list Rep, we never wanted to bring NS down, we just wanted to cause a big issue, which we did, so we were successful. Thats why we are walking away.

And you other people need to understand both Mods are right. It isn't hacking. It is clevery and trickery. We didn't force anyone to join the forum. We just had a admin pass from one which led to another and it spread like a virus. Gaining multiple passes to admins of proboards. That how it went from Frith to the USSR to Europe. I was a frith nation, we were never involved in Europe or USSR. But we still got there.

o yeah and if you IP banned Iron Jokers thinking that was me. You made a booboo, he was just some german guy that I met through RG and had nothing to do with this. :wink:

It doesn't take much intelligence to do what they did.

Secondly why on earth would you even be sad enough to take over someone elses nation when it is such a basic game.

Don't worry I will be to busy ready Atlas Shrugged, and studing some php stuff. *cough cough* just kidding on the php, I know this forum runs under that category. Well I wont be "hacking" anymore. In Real Life things heated up with the parents and my head wants to explode, well atleast by putting a bullet through it. O yeah, and the graphics, when I get bored I usually think a lot so I make graphics or pull nastey little tricks like this NS one.

Playa chk (which is brought back from the dead) is sitting in lazeraus and cant get any attention from me...my first nation is dead hacked into by a old nation... She changed the password and the email so i cant get playa chk ....back.....can u do something about that? cause every time i asked yall said no. grr

Once more for the cheap seats: this is considered fraud in most parts of the Western world, and we take it seriously. If we bust you stealing nations, we will report you to your ISP. Then you can explain to your parents why they're accusing you of T&C breaches.

With regards to hacking, the point the mods and I want to make is that this site hasn't been hacked. We want to be clear on that, because otherwise people get the idea that someone can break into our server and steal nations at will. This has never happened. If you choose a good password for your nation, keep it secret, and don't use autologin on public computers, nobody will be able to steal your nation.

My region, federation of trabia, has been hacked and stolen from me. He hacked in, rejected me and my UN delagate, and put a password on my region. My main nation, which i founded the region with, was Laosing. He recently stole that too, a few hours ago. All this has happened today. I alerted moderators but i have no idea when ill hear back. Right now I have a nation, Final Fantasy haven, that can be contacted. It amy be stolen too though. Heres the whole story in its order of events.

4 or 5 days ago- I start my region, federation of Trabia, and work to get ppl to join. Because of my interest in Final Fantasy, I decided I would ask them as well as some of my friends to join. The response was good and yesterday i had 25 nations.

2 days ago- Ppl in Final Fantasy region (FF) started to get angry cuz about 10 ppl had left them and come to my region. They posted negative messages about my region.

Yesterday- Everything was running fine, but due to the unrest in FF i decided to make a nation that i could put in their so i could monitor them and have access to the message board if i needed it.

Today- It started when a nation formed called "Anti-Trabia" and they moved to FF. they are qouted here:

They then proceeded to hack into my region under my nations name, reject me and my delegate Cruchy, and put a password on my region. Luckily I had another nation still in the region called "Final Fantasy Haven". I alerted all the members of FOT that it was not me who had done this. Later on, they changed the password again and changfed the factbook to:

World Factbook Entry: The Federation of Trabia is now under the control and ownership of Final Fantasy.

I was very mad that they had hacked and stolen my region, but I still had my nation Laosing. NOT FOR LONG.....
They then hacked my nation from the rejected realms and stole it as well, and changed the motto to "I surrender to anti-Trabia". I now have my nation in FF region and a seperate nation "Final Fantasy Haven" in the rejected realms. Im left with no power, no region, and I feel violated. He then has the nerve to send me a message from my stolen nation:

Hello, and grettings from the best nation on earth. You will find that I am much more powerful than your "law". Enjoy your stay in the Rejected Realms.

This really steamed my clams!!!! I want action and want to know if he could have hacked further into my computer. I want my nation and region back. I would also like to thank The CDM Cofee drinking Emirate of the Isle of Orleans for all his help and advice with this situation. Please moderators, do something to stop this.

Hmmmm, we're keepin' an eye on this on our forums too. It seems he's no hacker, but just knows a little trick, so it doesn't seem he's much to worry about. Still, he has said he "has another plot", not that I believe it.

For your your information, the nation Iron Jokers does not belong to the hacker. I know the owner of that nation, and I can asure you it's a highly respectable law obeying player. No way that the owner of that nation would hack ever! It is just a coincidence that that name is used. I am dead sure that all mods can verify that.
For some reason he's using random names of nations to communicate in regional fora. Be careful. He has used another false nation's name too, which I don't recall anymore.

We can't decipher who attempts to login to your nation- that is why the game now warns you of bad login attempts. The best way to prevent whoever it is from succeeding is to change your password every so often, and make sure it's long and not easily guessed.

It sounds to me to be more of social engineering, as in tricking the members to give her the password. Either by pretending to be a moderator or admin for NS, or via a fake site that claims to be NS and capturing the password attempts. Also see Phishing, as in creating a bogus email or web site that pretends to be from another web site or company but collects the victim's information via a email or web form, they are tricked into entering it.

BTW I guess the same password for this forum is used by NS as well, correct? So someone with access to this forum, can get the password to NS accounts, in theory.

It was just abuse of your powers on the other forum to send the players email to your email accounts. I fail to see how this is hacking or cracking. This is more of abusing your admin/moderator powers to get the passwords of other players by, wait for it, wait a bit longer, almost there, cheating, yes I said it. This is more like cheating than actualy hacking or cracking.

Still I do see the reason why you did it. Yet you must understand that you broke some rules in order to do it. Which made the IP and Deat bans.

Besides a real hacker or cracker would use VPN or some proxy to hide their IP address so an IP ban would have no effect on them. Or in some cases a zombie infected PC that has a virus or trojan infection that allows the hacker/cracker to remote control the victim's box. Giving the hacker/cracker an almost unlimited number of IPs to work from.

I've been in some hacker and cracker forums, and I read up on how they operate. You may very well still be learning, but you are not hacking or cracking in the sense that others are.

I was the theif and LBM was the spy

Also the nation "Reformed Germany" I only gave him some nations of mine but he still finds it fun to flame and piss off the mods.

Faxlandu... he was Grazon before I hacked him. You could check the start up IP, it would match his.
Toored.... is still Toored2, I didn't take that.
Old Carthage, was an inactive USSR nation (not sure of owner)
Cidonia, well someone sent me some Telegrams about me hacking it but the nation is deated now.

So before this nation is Deated with the rest of me. I am just letting you know that some people like Fax and Toored2 should get there nations back. They were only deated because of my and RG flaming and spamming, on purpose.

I am the last of the "hackers" LBM is IP banned and Reformed Germany is quiting with me. Well it has been fun since day one when I joined NS, and I know many nations of NS thought of me as someone who made this game worth while, making up side regions and plaguing war on the main region. It kept the players active and everyone had a good time.

Fax/Grazon, Remember when I was recruited by toored? I used the name VolumeSeven, and then I beleave it was Reploid that revived my first ever nation "TheCokeMan". The old days man.... tradeing Coke for Enterthefist and bam I got my name. Now look at me... deated on sight, no use of starting up again. Well I guess I am leaveing you with a peace of NS history. Me and LBM made the news section and I am satisfied enough. I know I have been plagueing NS for about 2 weeks now with Nation Stealing but I guess my time is up.
