What's wrong with my flag?

10-01-2004, 10:43
A few hours ago I received this telegram, sent to me by the Nationstates moderators:

Please choose a different flag. Don't put up some thing that people might find offensive. Thank You!

Now I suggest U all take a look at my flag and give me your opinion.
In the six months that I have been playing Nationstates I have never had a single complaint about my flag. I think there is nothing offensive about it and therefore I do not intend to change it.

For those interested, my flag is taken from the album Aenima by Tool.

Now I'm pissed, they changed my flag!!!

For those who still want to see it go to:

Well, it's been changed, so it's a moot point. But if it's the auto-fellatio picture from the album, I think you might be able to envision why someone might find that offensive. Obviously someone did complain, or I doubt it would have ever been brought to the attention of the moderators.

Regardless of what you think of the flag, when a mod changes your flag it's a very bad idea to change it back to what it was.

I can understand the point of view of the moderators. It must be that they have a, I suppose, of NO NUDES. Sure, your picture of a naked body was artisitic, but one must draw the line to "protect the kiddies"

There are children playing this game that's why. Seems fair.

Protecting the kiddies??

Ok, but in that case, ban TV as well!

There is more nudity in the average MTV video than in my flag!

You have a point but this is their dominion and they make the rules.

In case you haven't noticed, we have no jurisdiction over MTV or any TV station. We do, however, have jurisdiction over this game.

*slightly ot* actually i have john lennon on two of my nations. this one is the hippie one and then he's on my iron fist consumerists. i feel its a good way of showing the permanant duality of JL.

There's quite the difference between having volatile political views and performing an act of self-eroticism.

The rules clearly state that non flag like images are not permitted. It's surprisingly easy to offend people, I was personally asked by my UN delegate to change my flaf as some people might find it offensive. I was using a historical flag which I personally did not find offensive, but because I didn't want to cause any trouble I agreed to change it.
Nationstates is played by a variety of people and you should try to stay in everyones good books.

I agree that when a flag contains explicit content, it should be banned.
But this is, in my opinion, not the case.
I think it's very weird that in these 6 months that I've been playing NS this single complaint is enough to ban my flag.

Honestly, I've never had a single telegram from a country saying they thought my flag was offensive or explicit or whatever...

I suppose asking the honorable 'mods' for the identity of the nation that complained is too much to do?

While we do try our very best to respect players opinions and hear out your concerns ultimately it's not your decision. If your flag is found to be offensive then it will be removed. You can believe in your opinion it was a bad decision and that is your right. However replacing the flag back after it has been removed could very easily result in your deletion. So, I suppose it comes down to a case of picking your battles. Is this a battle for you that's worth losing your whole nation over? I suppose the choice is yours.

Or post links to it off-site. Lucky you weren't deleted.
