TG recruiting spam

08-01-2004, 02:24
The country "The Colony of Stromglave" is sending out mass "telegrams" recruiting for the region he/she has founded.

This is unsolicited, it is bulk, it is telegram. Therefore, by definition, it is TG-spam.

Please mete out appropriate punishment.

Thank you.

How else are regions supposed to recruit. Can you prove they they have sent it on mass to many others. Stop whining and get a life.

Don't worry. People like that get their punishment in due time. Kosmo Kramerica was sending out telegram spam and a couple of weeks later, his region got invaded!

P.S. I didn't even have anything to do with that region invasion.

And some nations, like USS Sentra, become U.N. delegates for their regions and nothing happens to them.

If only I had more...

Bah, anyway.

I thought that it was okay to send recruiting messages, so long as it is not done like several times a day or so.

It's not okay if you send recruiting telegrams to nations who aren't looking for a region. Then it's just spam.

And how can someone determine whether your nation is looking for a region?

Short of ESP, there are a few guidelines recruiters should follow:

1. Send personal telegrams, do NOT post on user-created regional boards. (It is presumably ok to post recruiting messages in spawning regions, such as the Pacifics and Lazarus, as long as you don't overdo it.)

2. Try to send messages only to newly created nations. I'd recommend nations under 100 million in size, although brand-new nations are best.

3. Be polite. Don't shout. Use good grammar and spelling. Give good reasons why the nation you're contacting would appreciate your region. Let the nation know whether your region is involved in the UN, roleplays, invades/anti-invades, or has extra services like forums, maps, newspapers/radiostations, or chatrooms.

4. Have an idea of what type of region you are trying to create. Then selectively telegram nations that seem to fit that criteria. To be honest, unless your script is loaded with qualifications, script-run soliciting is unlikely to be very successful.

5. The most successful recruiting campaigns use PERSONALIZED messages. Do they have a cool flag? An awesome motto? Creative and imaginative currencies and animals? Comment on these in your recruiting messages. Even if it's not a successful recruitment, you may make a TG friend.

6. Raise your region's profile. Post interesting messages and comments on the NationStates forum. Create ambassadors to well-known established regions. (But for goodness sake, don't deliberately poach players unless you want to piss people off.) Get involved.

Most importantly: Founding a successful, involved region requires A LOT of work, and usually requires the commitment of more than one person, unless you can spend mucho time online.

Good luck.

Not that people in those regions, especially Lazarus which is a combination of puppets, incative nations, and nations belonging to friends of players who had theses puppets back to join the friend's region do not mind it, just that they can't do anything about it.

For my region, we do send out some recruiter telegrams, but only to capitalist nations that fit our region's requirements. They normally have some sort of personal message, with a little Spamish quality. However we only send out some, to specific nations that deserve to be in our region. This is okay, right?

If you are carefully selecting nations based on their qualities, and only sending them one telegram, it sounds alright to me.

We need a mod ruling on this...as to what are acceptable recruiting methods, and what is considered spamming.

No we don't - try reading Equus' post. I've seen those guidlines posted in several threads. So please, do a tiny amount of homework before yelling "mods we need a ruling".

I agree. In fact, I think those guidelines deserve a sticky.

Don't worry, mass telegraming is the standard means of recrutiting, most regions only telegram people in the pacific anyway.

Dont be rude.

Equus's post is a good guidline to successful recruiting.

Obviouisly there is a limit to the number og telegrams you can send before it considered spamming.
As a former and future Delegate, I know that proper recruiting ettiquette is esssential for successful recruiting.

My question is..is there a limit to the number of telegrams you can send out before its considered spamming a region?

There must be becuase I too have seen nations warned for recruiting by "spamming".
Obviously..these nations were not very tactful..but nontheless.....IS THERE A LIMIT?

Yes, that was a little uncalled for. While I agree that Equus' post is very good (and basically the guidelines we follow in my region), it is not official. Therefore, a Mod ruling would be appreciated.

That way, if you get warned or deleted for recruitment techniques following Equus' guidelines, you won't feel the need to come here and complain.

Also...this is the MODERATION forum. Regular member responses are not even always appreciated. Usually people posting here want Mod responses.

Hypothetically, wouldn't an Announcement, possily calling for player input before making a final ruling (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=111038), be even better than a sticky?

Although the current rulings (or the last ones that I've seen) reflect Equus's post, two players recalling mod rulings < Mod Ruling
