All about Moderators, plus how to become one (Version 2)

The Basenji

Since we seemed to have lost our 1st version, I'm going to write a second version. Hopefully this will help you guys out.

What is a Moderator?

A Moderator (often called a Mod) is a player just like you and me that volunteers his/her time to make this site clean from Spam, flaming, and make sure the players stay within line. Think of them as the police.

How do I become a Moderator?

If you make helpful posts in Moderation, Technical, and anywhere else help is needed, the Mods will notice you. If your kind, helpful, and level headed, you may have what it takes to be a mod. When new mods are needed, you may be asked to become a mod. [Violet] will send you an email asking you to join the ranks is such a thing is needed.

Game Mod, Forum Mod...What does it all mean?!?

Let's break down the ranks for a second-

Tech Modling- Ahhh...our much loved Sal. Tech Modlings provide technical expertise to the mods and players.

Forum Mod- A new mod to the team. They have the power to move threads from one forum to another, lock threads, and editing out illegal posts and images.

Mod Colective- This is a nation that all the mods take turns in controlling. A Mod Colective have the power of a forum mod. Any mod can be controlling this one nation at any given time.

Senior Forum Mod- An experienced Forum Mod that has been rewarded with the title "Senior Forum Mod".

Game Mod- Once a Forum Mod is helpful enough, they will raise to the rank of a Game Mod. Game Mods have all the powers of a Forum Mod, and a few new ones. They can now delete nations, change illegal currency and/or animals in a nation, accept and code new issues, delete UN proposals, and establish a new region founder (This rarely happens).

Senior Game Mod- These Mods have had the postion for a long time, and are rather experienced. They know what they are doing, not saying everyone else doesn't.

Forum Admin- This is a very experienced player. They can do everything any of the mods can, but usually deal with IP bans from the forums. Forum Admin are like Site Admin in training.

Site Admin- This is as high as it gets, the most powerful position in the game. Our own beloved [Violet] belongs here. The Site Admins do all the coding, and stuff to make this game run smoothly. They, and only they, can do site IP bans.

Just a note- Don't ask to be a mod, that usually only hurts your chances. "Let your actions speak louder then your words"

If I left out anything please tell me...

Rep doesn't do any of the site coding... ;)

I would prefer to have our old sticky back. I'm sure [violet] will be able to find it. So, I wouldn't worry about making this thread to much to be honest. I'm sure we will get the old one back .. ;)

in the original version of this topic [violet] states that you should let her or one of the other mods know if you would be willing to serve, however you should do it in somme other method than posting it here, perhaps a simple Email to the admin, but please if you are a new user (500 million pop or lower) dont even send an email to [violet] it would most likely be ignored.

One problem with saying "let us know if you want to be a mod" (or words to that effect) is that people do let us know quite frequently and then say "but it says so on the forum".
I'm not saying that they won't if the post isn't edited to say that, but just that it might cut down on traffic.

Ahh..thank-you Goober for that list. :)

I added it, but didn't add the "ask to be a mod" part. That would be a bit confusing, since I also said- "Don't ask to be a mod..."

I think that if your helping around enough, you don't have to ask to be a mod, IMHO.

Without a post by one of the mods to confirm this, I don't think this can be taken as fact...probably just more IRC silliness.

[dredd] isn't around much anymore. Very rarely does he visit NationStates. Maybe you should put him under retired admin? Meh..

According to [violet], Dredd does stop by every now and then. Just doesn't post.

Maybe it is easier to re-sticky the other thread when it is revived, than sticky this, unsticky it, and sticky the old one. Stickying is easy on Invisionfree but phpBB could be different.

I don't really know why they haven't stickied it for the time being though.

Maybe they just don't want threads by non-mods stickied in Moderstion?

Or maybe they aren't reading it.

They are both the same thing. Invasionfree uses phpBB in the forums.

Nope. You just click the edit button for the first post, and then make sure you've selected 'Sticky' instead of 'Normal.'

Or he does, but logs in hidden, as admins have the power to, and only looks at the secret mod forum.

He probably appears in the mod IRC, though

That's true, just because we don't see him doesn't mean he isn't around.

Actually, we share access to the mod collective, so it varies. Different times, different people.

P.S. [dredd] is still active, though very behind the scenes. I've been in contact with him a few times.

As I see it, the only way this should be made a sticky is if some one wants to take the time (a mod obviously) to split the spam from it and idle conversation. Otherwise.. I'm not going to sticky it. I have no objections to it being a sticky.. but not with all this idle conversation on it. I am feeling to lazy to do it myself.. haha, but if another mod wanted to.. I personally don't see a problem with it. Maybe a forum mod, given it's a forum issue! *Hint* ..

 What if I started a new topic with just the orginal post, so that way there wouldn't be any idle chat and spam?
