Modalerts and what the mods think of them

I and many other people use modalerts very frequently, if not daily.
What I want to know is whether or not we should do that. What are your [the mods] position on the use of modalerts. Are they allowed?
What are modalerts exactly?
Daily? Wow, and I thought I might be using them too much when using them once every couple of weeks. This is a good question to ask, though I think it's obvious that mod alerts are allowed, since they search for them, but at what frequency before it's excessive?

Few Mods search for mod/alerts regularly; it is more useful to post a link in this forum with a brief description of who what etc, and crucially, a subject line which is more helpful than "Look here!" or the usual equivalents.

I think I searched for them a grand total of...once, just after becoming a mod. Nothing against them personally, since it helps if someone directs you to a long thread to skim through looking for the first shout of MODALERT.
Hmm, good to know, thanks.

The mod/alert system was originally developed by the mods, actually. I search for mod/alerts fairly often. A mod/alert post should include what is wrong with the thread/post you are trying to call attention to.

It seems that mod/alerts are allowed but to what frequency?

I use mod/alerts when I see some flaming by somebody, seeing as it would be kind of stupid to make an entire thread for one mild flame post.
What would you mods reccomend I do instead?
...no ...more ...mod/alerts....
seriously, there's nothing more annoying that seeing a stupid flame thread with like 7 posts, which all say 'mod/alert'.
I occasionally look it up but here's the thing:
If the modalert's on a topic of something like 30 pages then we have no idea where to look. Modalerts shold be restrained to threads that are vaguely around 5 pages or less. Otherwise, make a report in the Moderation forum with a link. It's much easier for us.

what I hate is folks who try to use modalerts as a way of getting back at someone, you know, start flaming somoene, then when they reply, posting a modlaert,
Is there a specific form, though? Should it be mod/alert, or simply modalert?

They're using mod/alert because every time you do it with out the forward-slash... it's creating a false alarm.

Just 'modalert' will do.
AAAHHHH!! it's the borg collective!
oh. phew, that's a mod collective. (is it in any way related to the borg?

We like it if you use mod/alert when talking about the system though, that way it doesn't clog the search list. 8)

I have a question, isn't modalert a brand of brown lipstick?

I personally don't search for modalerts.. but I have no problem with people doing it.
