National animals
I have a question about national animals. I have seen rulings where it has been made clear that pejorative terms regarding race, religion, sexual preference, or political stance are inappropriate.
However, what if it is not a pejorative term? I ask because someone recently joined our region with a national animal of the French. Perhaps I don't have a sense of humour, but to me that statment implies that the French ARE animals, if you see what I mean.
On the other hand, I've seen nations that name a specific person as their national animal and for some reason I don't find that offensive (such as a nation that names itself after a hockey team, with the national animal being a specific hockey player on that team).
So help me out here. Have I drawn an appropriate line of good taste, or am I a complete wacko? :wink:

I'd better put my hands up before I get fingered. I use Parratoga as my national animal. She and a couple of mods know and don't mind.
Individual people are OK, but if they don't like it you should change it.

These days we are getting more generic with our vocabulary. Some women on the stage would prefer to be called "actors" and as far as I'm concerned I don't see anything wrong with the idea.
It should be good form to consult someone before you use their name don't you think? Whatever title they bear, the personal name is what matters most.

While we are on this, one of my puppets: Aechdavaestan is in imitation of Afghanistan, which has a currency "afghani", and hence Aechdaaestan's currency is the "aechdavaei" keeping in mind that an Afghanistani national is called an "Afghan", and Aechdavaestan's nationality (although I have not mentioned it is well the nationality itself is "Aechdavaestani", but the main ethnic grooup is "Aechdava") is this all right?
I can not think of any way to make it clear in the name to somebody who does not get the refference.

Well, the Dzagrao, a smallish ethnic group of central asia do have several spellings for their name, but generally "Jagro", is not a widely used one so I wouldn't worry about it. . .

No, there is nome that I know of though when you consider that there are ethnic groups called "Bats", "And", and "Laura", I wouldn't be suprised.

Dolphins are okay too. The entire reason the rule was made to be sure people don't make their national animal the 'Jew' and end up insulting people. It's a precaution we take to ensure that NS is a happy and safe place to be.
