question about modalert

12-11-2003, 03:16
If someone types modalert in a forum like general will that action alone alert the mods or would one post a link here?

Should the alert be MODALERT, INSTEAD?

I saw someone state that the phrase is enough

Doing both is a good thing. Make sure you get a mod.

Its also helpful to post the reason if it isn't obvious. Such as...
Modalert  [forum]
...if you think it should be moved.

Correct. Those of us who do a forum search do a search on this word.

uppercase or does not matter

Correct. It must, however, be one word. "MOD ALERT" with a space will not show up.

I don't think the search is case sensitive, I'm not sure though, and if it's something really bad it might be faster to put it here, IMO anyways

I find that when asking about mod/alerts, it's usually best to use "mod/alert" so as not to get the mods annoyed by filing a false mod/alert.

For what it's worth, I find that when the alerts are in all caps, they're highly annoying. Perhaps because Netiquette has been pounded into my skull for... oh... 11 years now.

However, as far as the search do-jobber works, caps don't matter. Hells, you could type MoDaLeRt for all the engine cares.

Of course, if all caps is annoying, you may not want to give us any worse ideas...

I won't reply to text messages I receive on my phone which are all caps. My indoctination is complete, it would get on my top ten list of pet hates. Anyway I'm wondering into the world of my own petty concerns.

Lately I have noticed players saying "modalert" for superficial or frivolous reasons. The same player did so three times in one thread.
Is there a consequence for this behavior?

Well, if it is bad enough to constitute spam, the usual warning results. Anyway, I would prefer players to post links to the offending topics in this forum, instead of tagging them with mod/alerts. Because what happens is, one player does it and a whole cascade results. And if you are searching for mod/alerts, which very few Mods do, you end up wading through pages of them for just that one day's hits. Really, posting a link and brief description here is the best way to do it.

If there is a Q in the Tech forum that requires a mod response, would be appropriate to type ModalerT or is this reserved for immedite actions that need to be corrected by mods?

Not really necessary, since Salusa or I would probably see it the same day, and move it accordingly.

Cool. I just know there are some threads in mod or tech, where players are requesting a direct answer froma mod that often don't get answered. Generaly, if I notice thios I will just post that a mod will prbebaly respond sometime, in which case one generally does come in and answer the poster's question. Will continue to do this, since no reason to ModalerT it. Just curious how to make the system work best.

Thanks.

Yelling is uncouth. One should use itallics or boldface when stressing a point. Resorting to shouting is like resorting to ad hominem attacks.

Well in real life, you can't use italics, so I would yell

I guess my point is, if I ticked someone off and it was my fault, I couldn't blame them for yelling at me.

Real life conversations, and internet conversations are two different animals. Yelling is slightly more acceptable in a live conversation, but it still bad form. Online it is highly irritating, and accomplishes even less. With a real life conversation, yelling has the hope of intimidating your opponent, online, it only hurts the eyes.
