A question about circumvention technology

10-11-2003, 22:20
I was just wondering about whether the mods approve of publicizing proxies that circumvent internet filters.

probably best not to... they might IP ban the proxies to be mean (not that the mods are mean you understand)

Can we talk about proxies on this forum and share addresses of such amongst ourselves.

Discussing how to evade an IP ban on these forums is a warnable offense.

I'm not sure about discussion of proxies, though.

This is a queestion about what's acceptable on the forums. Hence, iMove  "Moderation".

Not to evade an IP ban but to access Nationstates from censored computers such as a school computer.

That I don't know.

You should probably hold off on any such discussion until I can find out from Admin or another Mod.

By the way, if your school* has banned NationStates, then you'll probably get in serious trouble with your teachers or principal for accessing a banned site. So, you probably shouldn't do it, anyway. It would probably be a better idea to petition your school officials to remove NationStates.net from the school's list of banned sites.

"Think about it for a moment."

...

* I'm assuming, here, that you're a student at a school, since you brought up that example. If the assumption is incorrect, then I apologize.

Personally, I would prefer it if people did not discuss proxies. It is a question of being responsible. For every person who would use such things to get around a block at school or at work, there is another whose spamming activities could be made more difficult to deal with.

I have a proxy. I can spam, flame, and do whatever I want on here without worrying about an IP ban, because I'd just use another IP. Have I ever done any of these things?

Nope.

I'm doing the exact opposite by helping the mods (Or trying, I probably get in the way! ).

Well, it isn't incredibly hard to find a working proxy (IMO). Asside form that, I really don't see any reason that specific proxies would ever need to be discussed on NS, though.

Basically, if you want a proxy, spend a few minutes doing some grunt work to find one. Although it'll probably not be a very good/secure/ect one if it only takes you a few minutes. And don't log on to anything that needs a password with it. So no NS. Hmm...
