Hacker Trouble

I am seriously worried that a hacker may attempt to destroy or steal my nation. Is there anything I can do to stop him, or at least get my nation back if he succeeds?

There are controls in place to block general hacking attempts, and to the best of my knowledge they're fairly secure. In the meantime, you can secure your account against the most common types of attacks with a few simple steps:

Ensure your password is at least 8 characters long, and that it contains both letters and numbers. The least like a real word it is, the better, and a mixture of lower and upper case is likewise a good precaution to take. Most hacking attempts rely on brute force; by making your password obscure, you make this very difficult, and the site runs a lockout policy for multiple failed login attempts

A hacker with 30 UN multis will try to take over my region and eject Kintoll and me from it. Also, a well-trusted friend of mine who personally knows this hacker did mention that he made threats to remove nations from the game, or simply taking them over. To make matters worse, I am one of his top three targets!

By the way, thank you for the information, Phoebos. I appreciate it.

30 multies!? This should be reported through the Getting Help page.

By the way, my former roommate had a nation known as New Splabnia, which was deleted last weekend. He checked the nation only a few days before it happened. It was his only nation, and it was only 19 days old. I am 99.9999999% sure that he did not break any of the NationStates rules.

Does anyone know how New Splabnia could've been deleted?

If you were on the same computer and both in the UN it would detect you as a multi, that may be why, but I'm not a mod so I don't know for sure.

The best protection against hackers is a good password. Personally, I use a random password generator program for all my passwords. SalusaSecondus posted some good guidelines for creating your own password somewhere, but I'm too lazy to search for it.

I was actually harrased by a hacker once, he somehow found out my password and everything. He was deleted swiftlly

That was due to your signature.

A good password should.....

• Have a mixture of cases
• If allowed, use non alphabet or numbers (eg !, @, # etc "_" Underscore, that is, is a good one)
• Include numbers
• Have more than eight characters

For example, a good password would be 2DoL_laR2$8@tUrN1, say.

That is done frequently when checking to see why a nation might have been deleted. It is resurrected and examined, the place where this is done is a region called Lazarus. I would assume the matter is being looked into.

Eh, it's probably done with. If the nation was deleted right after being revived, it's probably not coming back

Is there a region called NationStates Administration that you all are aware of? I received a telegram from a nation called the "NS Moderators" asking me for my nation's password, threatening to hack it if I didn't fork it over. Pretty shady if you ask me, especially since they're less than a day old.

OK, as a hacker myself, I really have to say that what real hacker would want to take over another nation? *If* I were going to hack into a nation, it would probably be one of the larger ones, or a moderator, or both. Not that I have/will.

I highly doubt that the people calling themselves 'hackers' really are. Mostly likly they just used a brute-forcer, or looked over your shoulder while you were typing the pass in. Or there could be a save-password feature on whatever browser that you are using that they could have used if you logged in at a library/school/net-cafe/etc.

I was actually just gonna call them script kiddies. And nearly every hacker I know does a bit of cracking, one way or another. The disiplines tend to be overlaping grey fuzzy areas.

Unless your going for the classic or MIT version of hack and hacker, then they're nothing alike.

And what is this Elite? There is only the one true 1337, do not mistake it for the rip-offs of the lesser scripties and technots.

So you can use a search engine.
So what.
There are clear lines drawn between a Cracker and a Hacker.
If your not aware then....

I'm not saying there arn't lines, but people can use both diciplines.

And the definition of script-kiddie does not include being able to use a search engine.

Alright... we know that there is a defined difference between the acts of Hacking and Cracking.

However, this argument is going on because someone is saying that people we call Hackers are also capable of the act of Cracking and visa versa. This is patently untrue! It is physically impossible for a man to know both the skillz of the haxxor and the skillz of the craxxor at the same time. I mean, really, such a concept is impossible! A person having two different skill sets at once? Nonsense! Rubbish! Fie, I say, Fie!

Yes, that was sarcasm. No, I'm not impressed by either of the sides of this argument. And no, I really don't care.

Hm, well, think about it like this, the guy posting the comment probably a bit of a technot, therefor stating that I was a hacker cleared up confusion. Also I was making the case that anyone doing it was a script kiddie. Note that I never started insulting anyone.

DC2600 is the DC meeting of 2600. While it does have an IRC channel, it is not the Alt.2600 newsgroup. There's a site for it, either dc.2600.com or dc2600.com . The main 2600 website is 2600.com . Don't go to them on school or filtered work computers.
