The GOOD LUCK TO REP PROD Thread!

I'm not likely going to be active or around the forums for the next few days. @_@

I'm currenly running on 4 hours sleep in the past 72 hours, have a sleepless night ahead of me, oodles of stress, and very bad headache.

The situation is this: I'm in Southern California, current firestorm capitol of the world. The Simi Valley fire (52,000 acres burned so far) is no more than 5 miles from here, and it will very likely be up into the hills above my house sometime tonight. My younger sister and I have already gotten the valuables ready to pack into the car if we need to evacuate.

If evacuation is voluntary, we've decided we're going to stay and protect the house (Much like my Dad did that last time the hills burned 15 years ago.). If it's mandatory, well, we pack up and run. =/ I'll try to keep you guys posted. (And I am taking pictures! Once I get the film developed, there will be pictures!)

~Rep Prod

Good luck! Hopefully you and your family will be safe and none of your possessions will be damaged.

I'm in Los Angeles so the fires aren't impacting me too badly, but I've been through the Rancho Cucamonga lately and seen how bad it is around in there ... Good luck with this, Rep.

Good luck Rep. I don't exactly know about how you're feeling, that said, I do know people who were involved in the NSW bushfires recently. My uncle lived not 2km from the bushfire.

Hope you don't need to evacuate...

Even though I live in Goleta (quite a bit north of the fire, about 5 hours drive in good traffic), our entire town is shrouded in smoke and the smell of burning wood is in the air. I can hardly imagine what it must be like down there right next to the fire, but it can't be all that dissimilar from hell. I was in Kern County when the fires broke out there over the summer, and the place was charred to heck. Many were homeless, and the hotel I was staying in was burnt to a cinder (the fire struck town while I was away and the police quarantined off the area, so most of my belongings that weren't in my car were destroyed). However, corny as it may sound, we all worked hard and pulled what we could together. Heck, I even made a couple friends out of the mess.

Point being that while this is hell on earth, you will survive it as long as you plan and keep your wits about you. Seeing as you've apparently done both, good luck. That's about all I can wish you.

Thanks for the support guys ^^; It's especially heartening in light of the recent massive anti-mod sentiment. So far, so good. The air outside is nasty, but it appears the fire is moving away from my location.

... It's still gonna be a long sleepless night though x_x

As for the air, I invested in an air filter for the house. It works up here, but I'm not sure how much good it'll do down there. :/

Well, a friend found an image of California and the fires from space, which I took the liberty of editting a smidge to show about how far it is from here. (Well, the image is more than 24 hours old, so it's even closer than the image shows, but...)

(Warning, large image! (http://rpstudios.ian-justman.com/junk/Firesfromspace.jpg))

And that's 12 miles, not 12 meters

I would think it would be quite impossible to protect the house from 10 mile wide walls of fire...

But then again, they do have some very fancy hose nozzles nowadays, it may just be possible.
28-10-2003, 06:05
thats a big f*cking fire, hell i bet you could roast hotdogs from 20miles out....

on a serious note, Rep stay safe and be ready for the evac order soon.

Just kidding, mate. Take care of yourself.

Rep take care of yourself and good luck. Hope the fire (that's one big -- well, the mother of all fires) passes your place (and your friends' and families' places, too) by. Don't let the venting on the forums get you down. It's not personal. I think they're mad about the decisions, not at the mods. Most rationale people realize you-all are trying your best to enforce the site protocols.

Dredd isn't around anymore. Not much anyway.

Rep, remember, your life has greater value than anything you own. If you have to, don't hessitate to evacuate, we don't need to lose you over some silly posessions.

And a side note on the anti-rep threads:

Ignore them, you don't have to prove yourself to them Just because they don't like the desicsion you made. Your job is to enforce the rules of NationStates, not please other players. If you truly and honestly think, in your heart, that you made the right choice then don't bother with those people.

Good luck to ya and I hope you don't have to evac.

Personally I live in Orange Country (under that big white blob south of Rep :P) and we have had some freaky weather here recently (it looked like sunset all day saturday ) although there wasn't much ash coming down today. Not actually close to the fires, though, so no chance of evacuation.

Very good news at the moment! The weather has shifted to an on-shore flow, so the humidity is rising and temperatures are dropping. The wind is still whipping the fires up good, but I think I'm in the clear now. (Granted, my paranoia is still keeping me wide awake, and the Simi fire could still burn back around the mountain, but... eh, we shall see.)

Oh yeah, the totals as of the last news report I saw on the SoCal fires:

Total acreage burned: Over 600,000 acres
Total fatalities: 20 (including one fireman =/)
Total homes lost: 1,552.
Total damage: Over US$2 billion

I think I'm in the clear. The Simi fire is 40% contained, there's a chance of rain over the weekend, the humidity is up and the temperatures are down!

Current SoCal fire stats:

7 fires out of control
Total acreage burned: 728,000
Total homes lost: 2,600
Total fatalities: 20
Total # of firemen on the lines: Over 11,000

Not to go gravedigging, but this post is relevant to this thread.

Yes, the fires are out, no, my house did not burn down, and yes, the first batch of pictures are uploaded!

http://rpstudios.ian-justman.com/junk/Firepics/

Sadly, the pics I took at night of the ridge above the house all backlit orange and from the Walmart parking lot at around midnight didn't come out =< In about a month, I'm going to be going up the coast, which I'm told is largely blackened all the way around Simi Valley and through Ventura. I intend to get some pictures of the burn area just to show how big this fragging thing was. ^_^

No, the Walmart didn't burn down =p

And luckily, at it's closest approach to the house (about two miles), the wind shifted or something and it bypassed my immediate area, instead moving up into the Newhall pass. A day or two later, the weather changed and we got rain @_@

If we have a really wet winter, the damage from these fires isn't over =/ It won't take too terribly much rainfall to trigger mudslides- especially up in the mountains. Luckily, I don't have to worry about that!
