Righteous Lefties and The Bruce

27-10-2003, 03:39
Dear moderators,

My main nation name is Equus. I also run the Righteous Lefties. I sent my UN nation (Righteous Lefties) to the UN to support Corinthe.

Apparently this resulted in an IP scan. It was noticed that my delegate, The Bruce, has the same IP address as I.

But you already knew this. Several months ago, I, The Bruce, and a third roomate sent a mod an email addressing the fact that we live together. I cannot recall which mod this was, but it was the mod that had given their email address out so that nations could inform them of this situation. In our email we stated that if the mods felt that this situation was inappropriate, to please let us know, and I and The Imperial Senators (a 3rd roomate, who has since ceased to exist) could give up our UN memberships, and The Bruce could keep his.

Granted, at the time, it was Equus that had the UN membership. About a month ago, I roleplayed Equus leaving the UN, and brought my secondary nation (Righteous Lefties) in, but I didn't think to send anyone an email about this. If you do your IP scans, you'll see that I often play RL at work and home, while Bruce plays The Bruce at work and at home. Only the home IPs match. Bruce probably also used my home email address to register his UN nation, since he doesn't have an email address of his own.

Please, if you no longer feel that people who share a home can both have nations in the UN, I will withdraw, but please give The Bruce his UN status back.

We did contact you about this, and we never received a response. We assumed this meant you were keeping our information on file and that there was nothing we were doing that was wrong.

Again, please give The Bruce his UN position back. He has never had multiple UN nations in the UN. The second one was mine. If you like, we can contact you on ICQ (numbers available on mod request) and you can talk to both of us at the same time. If there is another method you would prefer to use to identify us as separate people, please suggest it.

Thank you.

It sucks, and you're most likely telling the truth, but they probably won't do it. If an IP scan shows the same IP for two UN nations, they're banned from the UN. It's a "kill the innocent minority to stop the guilty majority" deal.

I think that's happened to a LOT of people, thanks to the Franco Spain issue. My husband had a UN nation, and a friend of ours with a UN nation logged in on our computer briefly to check his nation, and they both just got booted.

So the fact that the mods were duly informed, several months ago, as they requested, isn't going to make a difference? Then why were we told to notify the moderators via the email address in the first place if records weren't going to be kept? Why didn't the moderator who received our email tell us if they felt we couldn't each have a UN member?

Our email specifically stated, 'please tell us if this is an issue, and allow The Imperial Senators and I to step down gracefully so that The Bruce can maintain his delegateship, as he was the one to introduce us to the game'.

Look, I understand that your decision is your decision, but I feel betrayed that we followed the steps we were told to take, were led to believe that we had dispensation to play, and now, months later, (we're December nations!) informed that we were in the wrong after all.

I assume that, having presented those facts to the mods, the decision was reversed. No?

SalusaSecondus, thank you. That's all we ask. If you could contact the mod who had offered their email for registration, you should find our message. If there is anything we can do that will help you in your poking around, please let us know.

As a NationState in Wysteria, and as a member of the UN, I’d just like to appeal to the mods to restore The Bruce and Equus to their status as UN members, and to allow The Bruce to once again be our regional delegate.

I understand that these policies are in place to prevent abuse of the system, and I deeply appreciate the amount of volunteer effort that goes into moderating an enormous system such as this. I think it’s very important to say on their behalf that they’ve been nothing but forthright in running our region, and have brought together an amazing community of playing nations. They have put a *phenomenal* amount of effort into developing Wysteria, and it would be a terrible shame for all of us to allow this to fracture it.

Thank you for your consideration.

I'd like to add my voice to the ones already lodged about the Bruce being booted from the UN. They were aboveboard about their situation. I understand the UN delegate status switch between Equus and Righteous Lefties caused some confusion, but I do hope it will be resolved in the Bruce's favor. He has been a fair and decent delegate and a sound voice of reason. The Bruce and Equus are excellent roleplayers as well.

In an extremely rare appearance in this neck of the NS woods, I remain...

Dear Nation States Moderators,

I run the nation of The Democratic States of BlackBears in the region of Wysteria. I signed on this afternoon to find my country is now the UN Delegate for the region of Wysteria. This is something I did not want. I understand that thier are rules, but Rightous Lefties and The Bruce truly did nothing wrong they are two seperate peopl just sharing a computer, there are thousands of people doing this. The Bruce welcomed me into the region when I first came to wysteria, he has made it so that I felt comfortable playing the game, he has made the region of Wysteria great and peacful, he has done a huge amount of work on our secondary website, and so has Rightious Lefties/Equus. I assume you can see my flag, you will notice that I am a gay player and have a gay country, what you don't know is that The Bruce and Equus/Rightous Lefties have said that if I get gay bashed to let them know right away and they would take care of it, what you dont know is the both of them have been great friends to me even outside the game, I had surgary on my back several months ago and I am now unable to walk, but these two encouaged me to keep playing the game and to take as much time as I needed to get used to the situation. The Bruce is a great RPer he does monthly state of the region address, he lets us know whats going on in the Un he posts every UN resoultuion up for vote by the UN, he uses his vote to the UN for the refion not himself, even if he disagrees with the magority of the nations. He never never cheated on this game. Equus has done a huge job on our secondary mapping project equus as even made induividual politcal maps for every nation that wanted one. In Closing I just want to say that I hold these two players in the utmost respect and I look up to both of them for thier convictions and compassion, I urge you to allow both of them back into the UN and to allow The Bruce to regain Delegate Status in the region of Wysteria

Sincerely Yours
The TEMPORARY UN Delegate for the region of Wysteria

Dear NationStates Moderators:

I wish to add my voice to the many supporters of The Dominion of the Bruce, and respectfully call upon you to re-admit this nation to the United Nations and to reinstate it as UN Delegate for the Region of Wysteria.

I have known the individuals behind The Bruce and the Righteous Lefties for many, many years and I can state unequivocally and, I believe, without fear of contradiction, that they are two of the most honest and forthright individuals one could ever meet. I assure you that they would never - EVER - cheat.

I also assure you that they are telling the truth when they say that, while they are roommates and share the same IP address, their nations are, and have always been, separate and distinct.

It would be a terrible shame if our region were to lose its preferred delegate over a simple and unintentional misunderstanding. The creators of The Bruce and the Righteous Lefties have done nothing wrong. Quite the contrary, they have both worked tirelessly to make the NationStates experience the best it can be in our region of Wysteria.

I realize that the intent and spirit of the rule is to prevent one player from having more than one nation in the UN; but please, do not allow the spirit to be lost in enforcing the letter. I implore you, do not deprive our region of its hard-working, even-handed and SCRUPULOUSLY fair delegate, The Dominion of The Bruce, over an unintentional mistake made in good faith by two highly-respected members of the Region of Wysteria.

I remain, respectfully,

The Commonwealth of Epona
Proud Nation-State of the Region of Wysteria

Salusa,

For the record, I've been a member of Wysteria since I first came to the forums, and I've worked with both The Bruce and Equus. Based on my interaction with them on NS and the Wysterian forums, I'm willing to offer a character reference as to the fact that they are, in fact, two different people. They're both very straight-up sort of people, and have been very active in their role-playing. I hadn't realised they shared an IP, but then again, I never asked.

Please accept this as my vote of support for their reinstatement to the UN. It just wouldn't be right to have anyone else be the UN Delegate for our region. :)

I don't know what a "Franco Spain issue" is, but what happened here scares me. I have friends that play around with NS, and some have UN nations too. It never would have occured to me that checking my nation on their computer, or letting them play with their nations on mine could be problematic. I guess I'll put an end to that here and now, but I can't undo the times in the past.
Maybe things like frequency of use at an IP ought to be taken into account. If I log-in my nation at my home IP several hundred times, and a different nation gets logged-in at my home once during that time, and several hundred from a different IP, it should be pretty obvious that I had a friend over at my house, and not proof of dishonesty.
In the end however, this is just a game. If anyone takes it to such an extreme that IP scans and other such "big brother" measures become neccessary... that's just sad.

It's more than just the IP, which is why Moderators are humans, not computer scripts.

Again, if people wouldn't spend so much time cheating, such measures wouldn't be necessary.

Greetings to All and Sundry,

I received this message from the Moderators, but require some clarification on its content. Does this mean that I can now reapply to the United Nations or that they are sorry about my current circumstances?

In either case, thanks to the Moderators for looking into this mess, and to my fellow Wysterians for their patience and support.

In that case:

WHOOT!

Many thanks to the mods! I felt terrible when Bruce lost his delegateship because of me.

If I decide to have a UN nation again, I'll make sure to only run it from work so that this problem never occurs again.

Thanks again!
