E-Mail addresses and the UN

02-10-2003, 14:40
I am a teacher in Florida who is using this program as a class project for my high school US Government Class. Since some of my kids do not have e-mail addresses I have allowed them to use mine when joining the UN. I understand the rules associated with this issue, but I was wondering if we can make an exception in this case. The e-mail address they are using is my e-mail from school, not personal.

If you can help me with this I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Ms. C

Generally we don't have problems with school networks. As a general principle though, if the cheat scan picks someone up on the IP address check, we will double check to see if the IP is a .edu or not. If it is an .edu, we will refrain from a UN ejection unless there is additional evidence linking multiple nations.

I quoted something for you

I understand the rules associated with this issue, but I was wondering if we can make an exception in this case.

The check on using the same email address is part of the UN sign-up procedure (automated), so it would require some programming to change that. Wouldn't it be simpler to just get a batch of addresses on hotmail or something, or perhaps ask the system administrator of your school (however access is arranged) to generate a bunch of email addresses?

Also keep in mind that accessing this game from the same IP (computer or network) with different UN nations can cause these nations to be flagged as UN Multi's, and subsequently banned from the UN.

You also might want to consider getting parents involved and thus having participation at home, or participate as non-UN nations.

Anyway, those are my comments as just a player, and I hope it's a start at the answers. We'll see what the game mods and/or [violet] have to say about this.

Hi. If they are old enough, have you considered walking them through creating a free yahoo account?

You don't need to supply an email adress at the begining, it's volentary.

You do need one to join the UN though, That, of course, being the whole point of the post.

Exactly. And if you are allowed, you could pass out some sort of permission form to open up email accts for them possibly.

Beyond that, I love this game, and think it is an interesting way to look at nations and issues there within. Not sure how this is a model of the UN though.

I am not saying it is a bad model, I have spent little to not enough time in the UN part of this game.

If you're willing to be a bit patient with it, I'll see what I can do.

Why would your kids need to join the UN? I can't think of anything they could learn from that.... :?

Ok, this seems like a very reasonable request. I've discussed this with the other mods and everything should work out. We'll need a few days to figure out how to verify who's one of your students and to work out all of the wrinkles so that this doesn't trigger the UN multi scan.

Hope the class goes well.
