Why is flaming bad?

Seriously. So what if someone gets their feelings hurt? If they can't take the heat, they need to get out of the kitchen.

And if someone can't resist flaming, and can't handle the punishment, they should leave NS. ;)

Brought to you by the very creator, owner, rule-maker, and "god" of the website, Max Barry:

What can I post?
You can discuss and argue about almost anything, so long as it's vaguely relevant to politics or NationStates and doesn't fall into any of the categories below. You don't have to be politically correct, but you must maintain a minimum standard of behavior.

What can't I post?
Any content that is:

obscene
illegal
threatening
malicious
defamatory
spam
This applies to your nation's name, motto, and other customizable fields, any messages you write, images you post, or any other content you upload or link to NationStates. If you do, your nation will be deleted. See the site's Terms & Conditions for details.

Also prohibited is the practice of "griefing." Griefing is playing with the primary aim of annoying or upsetting other people. If you do this, the game moderators may take action against you.

What is flaming?
Posts that are:
Malicious
Defamatory
And useless spam.

Hmmm, so by those definitions, ITS BANNED BY THE CREATOR OF THE WEBSITE!
There, is that really hard to understand?

Re-read the title of this thread, Shirley. I didn't ask what flaming is, but why it's considered "bad."

If that's too difficult for you to understand, let Me rephrase the question: Why is flaming not allowed?

1. I'd advise you not to flame.
2. Its banned because the creator of the website chose to have it banned.
Why he chose it? Don't know, but it is HIS website, he has OWNERSHIP of it, and therefore can dictate just what is and isn't allowed as per his values if he so deems to.

Q: "Why is flaming bad?"

A: "Because Max Barry and [violet] don't care for it, and want things to be civil. Therefore it is banned. Don't like it? Go somewhere else. Perhaps the usenet group alt.flame where it's encouraged."

I think the problem folks have in the forum about flaming is the perception that flaming is bad - unless it's a mod or a mods buddy.

I'd go into a spin on one liners done by the clique - but I'm back dancing on thin ice as it is...

In my opinion, there are four types of flames.

The "Newb Flame"

"u sux0r u m0r0n, g0 5uc|< 4 ****"

The "Invalid Flame"

"You are such a moron. You <invalid point> and <invalid point>. And, you smell like cheese!"

The "Valid Flame"

"You are such a moron. You <valid point> and <valid point>. I just shot down your arguments. And, you smell like cheese!"

The "Lazy Flame"

"I just do not like you because you are annoying. And a moron, in my opinion."

In my opinion, that first one is the bad type of flame that should be acted against. The other three (to a lesser extent the "Invalid Flame") are tolerable, in my mind. The "Lazy Flame" can be bad if he or she really flames the person, then it is more of a "Newb Flame". The "Lazy Flame" is usually short and not very offensive.

There are more types, but I only thought of four just now.

Similar to all RPGs, there are two levels to all interaction to this game, IC and OOC. IC, practically anything goes, however, the only way that a community such as this can function is if the PLAYERS (ie. OOC) treat each other with some degree of respect. Flaming is contrary to this, and thus fundementally harms the NS community, and thus the RPG.

This is true, players should. But, in most cases, a little flame does not offend anyone. It rarely does, to the normal player! Though, it does get annoying (especially the "Newb Flame" and "Invalid Flame" ones). I love using my own names for them!

I think that mods should be a little more relaxed on flaming, but still keep the peace. How much they relax is up to them, the mods, but this is just my thoughts on it. And yes, I know that they will not relax at all just because of little old me.

I think these policies are necessary cause most NS players are under 18 and lack the maturity to treat each other with courtesy and respect.
That is all the rules do. No more, no less.
What is so difficult about being courteous and respectful.

It is because of the minors on this site that things such as profanity, porn, hatemongering, racism, flaming and other similar items should be banned. Even if it means banning you from having a NAZI flag.
In RL, the rights in the constitution only apply if you are old enough to vote. (Which is 18). (With the right to life being one of the very few exceptions.)

I agree with you, I am just saying to have them relaxed a bit. Some flames that do not offend people at all and are taken as pure entertainment should not cause a nation to be deleted. This happened to Tarentum. We thought he was entertaining with his silly flaming.

If the only way you can call someone out is through flaming, then either A) they are not full of BS or B) you are simply taking the lazy route to insult rather then to logically dismantle thepir BS.
