Is it stricktly forbidden to hijack threads?

Dear mods and all others who may have an opinion on this.

Believe it or not, but sometimes, or rather very rarely I should say, new threads/topics in general aren't that well thought through. Noone have or wants to post their opinion on the subject after the thread is made and others even calls for a lock. I brought one example with me:

http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72850&highlight=

This one qualifies I think for the scenario described above. Now, if this thread hadn't had such a trigger happy title, I suppose we could have hijacked it for our own purposes? Or couldn't we?

I fully understand the value of not hijacking threads that are alive and kicking and where the discussion is ongoing and such, but some threads just don't get that kind of jump starts when they're spawned. Can we hijack, hrrm, "useless" threads into something good without getting it locked halfway through a brand new and entirely different theme?

Best regards, BMV

P.S.
Btw, this is not a complaint against Cogitation for locking the example thread above, I think he did the right thing. I suppose we could have saved that thread after lots of hard work, but title made it quite impossible to keep.

P.S.S.
I'm sure lots of you will ask why I would want to hijack useless threads. That is an entirely different discussion which we can have somewhere else. This is not about the motive for hijacking, this is about the hijacking itself. Don't hijack this thread for any other discussion even if the irony is monumental, ok?

Some topics have a point to begin with and then move over to a tangentially-related point slowly (topic evolution) or rapidly (topic hijacking). These, I might not lock (but I might move them).

Some topics never had a point to begin with and are spamming, trolling, flaming, or otherwise offensive. These, I lock (or, for my fellow Mac fans, iLock  ).

This example was a topic that had no point to begin with and was trolling and was in the process of being hijacked. In this case, I cared more about the original trolling than the hijacking. Hence, I treated it as the second case, described above.

In retrospect, I think that I should have mentioned only about the trolling, not the hijacking. I'm a new mod, and I'm learning.

So, in my current opinion, trolling is a significantly worse offense than hijacking. In the future, topics like the one linked to above I will lock for trolling, rather than for hijacking, as it's the original trolling that I care about. Anyone who feels that the topic was being hijacked to a more acceptable subject is welcome to start a new topic on the new subject and provide a link to the old topic.

Any other questions?

Lets put it this way...a thread asking for the assassination of any world leader is trolling and/or flamebait. Thus, Cog's lock was quite appropriate - no matter whether thread hijacking is allowed or not.

Certain RL nation states have been able to get away with such pronouncments of late

Yeah, because they have armies to back them up.

Yeah, and you don't have em. Cogitation simply gathers his Geen Barrets, comes in and locks the door. Get yourself a bigger power than the mods have, and try again if you dare :)

Just because unlike the RL UN, we Mods actually step up to the plate when someone is out of line isnt a reason for you to hate us :P

Nope, you have to take a deep breath and listen to the mods.

As much as I hate to admit it.
