Also, with the current system, at the bottom of the rankings, it seems like the classifications represent individual types (e.g. bureaucrat, diplomat, senator, etc.). What's up with the change to nation types (World Power, Nuclear Power...?)

Come one, we should know better than to 'aspire' to getting to the next post level... That just creates spam and is completely useless... If anything - you should impliment any new 'levels' as surrepiciously as possible, and when ppl get there, they get there. End of story.

France, India, and Pakistan (in real life) are nuclear powers, but I wouldn't call them superpowers. So, those two titles should be reversed, Repploid.

I think the new titles should be in concordance with the ones already present. No tech-oriented titles.
So, no nuclear power ! Why? Because i doubt nations that are RP-ing in the Dark Ages would want to have anything to do with nuclear stuff. Or nations that are soooo far in the future that nuclear seems to them what throwing stones seems to us now.
Also, no world power. How can you be a world power if you didn't discover the World yet, lol ?
Or, there could be people Major Powers that have a collapsed economy and no army fundings, so...

No, rank is based solely on how many posts one has. However, manual comparison of posts vs. foundation date is certainly possible (ie, do it yourself).

Sorry, i don't like these titles at all, because as i said, either they use a specific tech level (Nuclear Power), or they use titles belonging to certain types of governments (Prime Minister), or a nation status not recognized by anyone (International Leader), or something that might not be applicable (Global Superpower - a nation in the ancient times doesn't know about The Globe).
They should only reflect a nation's flux of communications using diplomacy, and should not imply anything else, for example the skill or quality of the diplomat's posts.

As a side note, and something interesting to observe, the many titles proposed reflect as many personalities...

So do the current ones. I doubt many dictatorships have Senators, and I made a point to not have any ministries, thus no Ministers.

Yeah, I agree it's redundant. I just put it in there as a random idea of no merit to make my post at least partially, worthwhile. Anyway, I am interested to see what you mods come up with.

Nuclear Power is above Superpower? This doesn't seem right. There really aren't enough people over 10,000 for this to matter that much. Unless we count total posts even those that have been deleted in which case I'd suggest something like "psycho" because no one's going to get to that point without a sense of humor about how they got there.

--Ranks for up to 20,000 posts
--Ranks related to "power" (like that superpower idea Rep has)
--Much more ranks. I'd suggest... one rank per 200-500 posts. For 1000+ level, one rank per 600-2500 posts.

I don't agree with this. You have to look long term. I've been playing for 6 months now, and have racked up ~5,500 posts. 6 months from now, I wouldn't be surprized if I had 10,000 posts. While the really high numbers seem insane now, what about someone who plays for 5 years?

Shouldn't regular database culling continually reduce postcounts as well?

Let's say that over a certain timeperiod the database will contain a very large number of posts, at which point the normal old topic removal and new post generation would be in balance (hard drive space isn't infinite, and performance problems will force the issue anyway). This means that the number of posts someone has will eventually just fluctuate around a number determined by this person's posting frequency, not the total number of posts since the beginning.

]No, you are not seeing things. This is for real- we're looking into adding some new forum rankings, since it's common knowledge that 250 posts and Powerbroker no longer really hold any importance since any intrepid RPer (or spammer) can hit 250 posts within a day or two.

At the moment, the only ideas we've got are my own, as follows:

500 posts: Major World Power
1000 posts: Superpower
5000 posts: Nuclear Power
10,000 posts: (no ideas!)

you're right you do have to look long term. I had 12000+ posts before the purge and if it where not for the purge, the fact that I worked all last month and a few weeks the month before and the fact that I am now busy with school then I would probably have 20000+ posts.

10,000 is a huge milestone but in no way needs to be the last one. just because someone were to become a Normacker does not mean that they would have to stay one. future milestones could be named for other people who where the first to reach that ridiculous height.

then again long term is irelivant. long term = more purges. no one can sustain a count forever

They wouldnt be able to RP,the forum would have crashed under all those posts

The current forum ranks don't describe the nation itself, but are more related to the authority of the person speaking for the nation. (Although some people RP it differently, of course.)

Because there are very large nations with low post counts, and small to medium sized nations with huge post counts. Post count does not determine the size, strength, goodness or anything else of your nation.

So if we get new forum ranks, I'd like to avoid having them imply anything about the actual nation.

Perhaps this should be kept simple. Powerbroker comes in at 250. then add one at each of these levels (I have no names for the titles) 1000, 2500, 5000, 10 000, 20 000 etc.

It all depends how big "your world" is. Global is just global, while your world may be just as big as NationStates :wink:

Not a big fan of the 666 title; it seems frivolous. Eh, but not really complaining.

The World Power rankings seem a little clunky, but are fine. I don't like Power Bloc, however. How can one person be a Bloc? Furthermore, having been reminded of forum purges and the like, I find it highly unlikely that anyone could hit 15001, let alone 20000. Perhaps just end things at Dominant World Power?

Well, somebody who RPs a lot is more likely to maintain an elevated post count through purges, since I'm not certain if 'official' purges (not the mod purges) knock posts off the post counts.

There's nothing higher than Head of State really is there? But once you start getting more influential and well known (which you're bound to be after 1000 posts) you could be considered a power, since the Head of State represents the nation. The ones afterwards reflect the influence of the Head of State perhaps.

Apologies if this appears a bit conservative and dull, but might I suggest we simply raise the thresholds on our existing titles? Starting from Bureaucrat, the upper limit is 5, is it not? Raise it to 20? And so on up, finally raising Powerbroker to somewhere in the 2000-2500 range?

The existing titles strike me as very sensible, and I would not wish to see absurdities of the "Global Hyper Mega Power" sort. The handful of one word titles we have now suits me fine.

Also, I fear that having titles for post thresholds going up to 5,000 or above is likely to prove counter-productive, and would most likely lead to a second round of competitive post-whoring.

Just my thoughts.

I think the existing ones are nice and neutral, and unlikely to be OOC for either medieval or space-age RP. Which is why I suggest more-or-less preserving them and simply increasing the thresholds. My suggestions:

Only for people who spend hours in General. For the average UN poster or NS/II roleplayer, it can take awhile to move up the early ranks as listed. And remember the current levels. Bureaucrat is 0-4.

Anyway, I do not see how it is unfair for people to have to spend ages playing in order to get to the top titles. The whole point is drawing attention to a certain hierarchy, is it not? And in any case, there are already close to 300 people with 1000+ posts. Sirocco's latest suggestion would bestow at least the fourth higest title on all of them, and any others who get that far in the meantime. That's fair, I think.

I like Sirocco's suggestions myself - not that it terribly affects my title or anything...butcha know ;)


All those suggestions with 10,000+ or 20,000+ as the highest title arent going to fly. There's no one here with 10,000 posts, why give titles for 20,000 posts - that's just a "reason" for players to post-whore (not that they need any more of a reason than their current ones...)

I think having 5000+ as the threshold for the highest title would not give anyone any temptation to post-whore. Although there is always one.

The thresholds are already there. Just because you don't get another title doesn't mean that there are no thresholds...

I think that General should be split in half; a General forum, and a Political Discussions forum...

That's a good point, or perhaps one of the other admin, i.e: [dredd] (although that is if [dredd] still works on the site?!)?
