Ruling on the General Forum

Reploid Productions
30-07-2003, 07:46
Following the massive purge of spam/chat/pointless threads in the General Forum, several of the mods discussed the issues raised by players. This is the ruling on the subject (subject to change should [violet] come to a different ruling):

1) General Forum threads will have a 65 page cap, at which point, they will be deleted if they are mostly spam (quote pyramids, word games, flaming, etc), or locked if they are mostly legit conversation (chatting/debating/etc). This is to prevent supermassive threads that clog the forum and only worsen the 'invalid session' problem.

2) Chat/word game/etc threads are allowed. However, they will be capped at 65 pages, and locked or deleted accordingly, at which point the thread's regular posters may start a new thread.

3) "Post-whoring" will not be tolerated, and will be treated as spamming. If you're going to post, make sure you're adding something to the thread's discussion. Those of you who lost massive chunks of your post count in the recent purge, take note.

4) Flaming, as always, is not tolerated, and will be dealt with according to the moderator rules of engagement as outlined by [violet].

The management apologizes for the confusion caused by this. Thank you for your cooperation, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

'invalid session' is what happens when the forums are so busy that they just stop working entirely. Depending on your browser, it may show up as "page cannot be found".

Much though I hate to say it, thank you moderators.

Um question. I lost well over half my post,( not conserned) how ever I only had like 1500 post to begin with. Dose that clasaffie me as a "Post Whore"?

Most of your posts were on the 'eternal thread', and were actual conversation. Post-whoring is essentially spamming to boost one's post count for the sake of having a big post count.

Ok cool. Hard to know if you are screwing up when you dont know what defines screwing up.

Having say, 4000+ posts in a single thread would probably be a sign your postwhoring. But looking at your age, and the fact that you had maybe 1500 posts, it's safe to say you weren't a post whore.

And just what is wrong with post whoring? Those poor nations that lost over half of their post counts had valuable RP posts about hookin up, and that's all there is to life ya know.

You mods are just tryin to hold the people you dont like down.

Give the people back their post counts, its not like post-whoring is spam and the post whores should be deleted...I mean, c'mon, everyone's gotta be able to just chat around, and those 800+ page threads were really great to read back through. There was a lot lost when they were deleted. They added a whole new aspect to this site (dun ask me what it is, cuz I dont know).

Good thing that the spam of general will soon go. I don't post there anymore because ALL I get is Invalid_session.

Personally, it seems like the server is better now.

Let's hope general becomes spamless. Or less spammy because of this. 8) I doubt it however.

I was wondering why I was about 5-10 posts short after recently passing 1k. That answers that....I've never really been much for the "eternal thread."

If the 'invalid session' problem is worsened by long threads, why aren't the threads in all fora limited to 65 pages?

I think that I suggested this in the Tech forum thread (here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1088806#1088806)), but why aren't some of the much-older general forum threads deleted?

....wait.....checking some of the older pages, many appear to have been deleted.

Well, nevermind.

I know what spamming is, but I would like an exact definition (just to be sure...)

Every message that you don't want to get. Every message that repeats many times. Every message that is not personally directed to you, but is still tg'd to you. It is tasty ham that fattens you like hell :P

I think this is a good move over all. But I'm nearing a thousand posts and I'm afraid now.

Normack would like some things to be known.

I would like it known that yes I could be considered a post whore with 1000's of posts in singles threads but little of that was spam. spam gets boreing and without being to talk to other nations you end up burning out.

I would like it known that yes I got 300+ post a day but I was also on these forums more then 12 hours a day.

I would like it known that I believe that code should be changed to make count permenent.

I would like it known that no I can't spell and use grammer and will n00k the first nation to point that out.

I would like to ask if the clean outs are daily as my post count never raises anymore....

I would like it known that Norm is in love with Ny :P

What part of this do people not understand:
Your post count means NOTHING.
Zip, Zero, Nadda.
Post count doesn't earn you uber extra special bonus points or respect from anyone.
The code doesn't need to be changed to affect post count, because post count is a meaningless feature.

Who really cares how many posts they have.
So you have more than others, BIG DEAL, that doesn't make you special.
