History

Like many Canadian colonies of the time The Commonwealth was established as a colonial for Great Britain in the year 1756. Founded by the famous British explorer Herman Gavel. At first the colonial consisted of one small fishing village, by the name of Hope. The village quickly spread through out the region. This of course led the colonies to come in conflict with the remaining First Nations people already inhabiting the land. The years following were to be know as the "Years of Strife". Under constant Native American attack the small burgeoning colonial was threatening to be wiped out. To combat these attacks, Britain sent a company of Grenadiers to defend the region. These elite troopers inspired the colonists to drive out the Native Americans. By the beginning of the late eighteen century, the "Years of Strife" had ended with the First Nations utterly defeated at the final battle of Jacobs hill. By the grace and experience of the Grenadiers The Commonwealth to continue to exist. Even still today, the Genadier Corps remain The Commonwealth's elite shock soldiers, deployed over sea to protect their interests.

Over the years The Commonwealth quickly grew, becoming on of British North Americas most valuable regions. Hope was at a population of over six thousand, while the recently constructed spiritual Cathedral of Saint Peter had grew into a settlement, with pilgrims from every corner of the Christen World flocking to see the magnificent sight. Yet such happiness could never last long. When the War of 1812 was declared, The Commonwealth, had been requested to send forces to the help Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. Many brave Citizens died defending their homes, but many like the rest of the Canadian Provinces the Americans burned every farm in their path. Hundreds died of food shortages. The Cathedral of Saint Peter, had been burned to the ground, in hopes of demoralizing the loyalists. Yet this plan only infuriated the Citizens towards the United States. From its ashes a new Cathedral had been born, as a symbol to all British North Americans. Once the war had ended with no visible winner in sight, The Commonwealth started to see themselves as a separate nation. They had defended themselves against the American attacks, not the British. It was their Grenadiers leading the charge at the battle of Battle of Queenston Heights. For the first time the citizens of The Commonwealth thought of themselves as Commonwealths first, British North Americans second. Even though, it wouldn't be correct to say The Commonwealth severed their ties with Britain. It is more accurate to say they just became part of the Domain of Canada. The Commonwealth still shares exalted standing with the United Kingdom.

As a member of the Domain of Canada, The Commonwealth phased out of existence for a extended period of time. There was only the Northern Province of Canada. Though any citizen will tell you they were always still Citizens of The Commonwealth, to the rest of the World there was only Canada. In both world wars the "Northern Province" served. Fighting tooth and nail against the tyranny of fascism. The Grenadiers quickly became known as the must ruthless and efficient division of the Canadian army. Becoming a favorite by commanding officers. Major John Mahony famous quoted:

"It'll take at least a full battalion of tanks to win this battle, or failing that, at the most a platoon of Grenadiers."

Of course it was a major exaggeration, but none the less it showed the fighting capability of the Northern Province.

By the late 20th century, Canada took a turn for the worse. The great surcession took place within the nation. Started by the French influenced province of Quebec leaving the nation. Many other Provinces turned to leave from Canada. By the year nineteen eighty, ninety-nine percent of Canada had succeeded. Ending the nation of Canada. Now renamed the United North States or UNS for short they begin to annex smaller run city-states around them. This process was and still is knowen as the Reuninfacation Acts However all was not well with the UNS, the region they inhabited had long since been taped dry of any oil sources. This lead the UNS to begin the War in Sorsk (2009-2015). Manging to secure national oil rights from the Sorksien goverment, the nation pulled back it's troops in defence of the Homeland, by the invading USPA (September 16th-October 12th 2009). With it's borders secure the UNS now foucs on the many social, economic and political goals they wished to be reached.

Geography

The Geography of the United North States is primarily composed of rich and a fertile valleys. The Irwin river cuts through the eastern part of the Nation. In the extreme North lies the Conclave Mountain range. Forming the great barrier that protects most of North America from the Arctic Ocean. If the Conclave Mountains were not there, most of Northern North America would be swiped away in a torrent of freezing Arctic water.

The country has both hot summers and cold winter. In the cold months of December more than ten inches of snow are expected.

Transportation

The vast majority of the population have private motor vehicles. This has led to major traffic problems along the UNS major highways and Urban Centers. The goverment had localized most of the Public transport budget to Inner city buses and underground subway systems. The UNS government plains by the year 2020 to have a GO train system allowing people in outlying suburban areas to reach work, without the need of private transportation. Air Commonwealth is the most used air travel service in the nation. Providing easy access to most international locations. There are only three international airports. Located in Hume, Hope and in Saint Peter's City. There are also numerous regional airports dealing in, in country travel.

Government

The Commonwealth of United North States is a Parliamentary Democracy, with clear separation of Head of State and Prime Minster. The Queen of England is considered The Commonwealth Head of State. Elections are held every six years, though a general election may be called at any time via an motion of no confidence if the opposing party, or rarely the current party feels their Premier is not suited for the position. The United North States have two primary political parties. The first being the Conservative Party of The Commonwealth, and the Liberal Party of United North States. So far the Conservatives have one the last twelve elections, though support of the Liberal party has spiked over the last few years.

Economy

The United North States take a strong capitalist (some would say increasingly laissez-faire) style of economics. Rising from a crippling economic recession brought on by the crude oil crisis (2007-2009) the United North Sates has manged to secure oil rights from Sorsk. And as such brought stability back into the free market.

Immigration

The United North States has had a long and complex history with the issue of immigration into their country. During the years of strife Hope had been a hotspot of immigration, mostly from the remaining Catholics left in Britain. This stream of population had burst Hope from a small struggling colony to a economy powerhouse. This period lasted well into the early nineteenth century. Once The Commonwealth Had succeed from the sinking ship that was Canada they emerged with a new foreign policy: The Sojourner program. The plan was simple: Foreign workers are lured into the country and then exploited. Young people, preferably from poorer countries come to The Commonwealth to work there. These "foreign workers" or, generally, "Sojourners" are imported to do the dirty work (collecting rubbish, mending the roads, etc.). At 60, which is the age limit, they are sent back ("forcibly repatriated").
