(Autonomous Robot Infantryman)

ARI is designed to be a modular, adaptable and fully autonomous combat robot. She is capable of learning multiple languages, piloting tanks, mechs and aircraft with equal ease and using any man-portable infantry weapon.

ARI was first proposed as a replacement for heavy powered armor suits, which were quite bulky and often required large amounts of maintainence time and money to be kept in combat readiness. The first ARI prototypes were based on redesigned armor suits, equipped with heavier weapons and armor in lieu of a pilot and life-support. While successful in open terrain, they left much to be desired in urban combat. Several revisions later led to the creation of the ARI III, which was much smaller and designed to have a vaguely human shape. While far superior to any human soldier in combat, the ARI III's suffered from lack of armor against anti-tank weapons and inadequate cooling; this left them vulnerable to heat-seeking weapons and infra-red detection.

Eventually, the ARI IV was commissioned and designed from the ground up to work with infantry units directly, being assigned to individual squads and platoons. The new ARIs looked far more human and were cleansed of the problems that had infested the earlier models. The cooling system, locomotors, armour design and sensors were completely redesigned and much more effective. A new module-based system was added to the ARI software. This allowed the complete specifications and operating instructions of a new weapon to be downloaded to ARI through a unique, user-friendly interface. ARI was officially adopted by the Soviet military on Nov. 28th, 2342, following the complete success of the testing trials.
