Coup d'état
Nachmere
25-05-2009, 22:00
President Ray Ginger was standing on a balcony in Ancient Nachmere City.
To his left and right were the top ministers of Nachmere. The road below the balcony was lined with NCPD police officers. Behind the officers, on the sidewalk, a crowd of Nachmerian citizens was waving flags and cheering. On the road itself the troops of the TM-2 tanks of the 2140th Light Armored Brigade were on parade. With them the LIFV-2070s of the same unit were travelling with the troops sitting on the vehicle roofs. They were wearing full combat gear and the AFVs were shining with new paint.
36 tanks were in the lead, followed by 36 LIFVs. Behind them was an open top Land Rover. A man, about six feet tall and very wide was standing up in full dress uniform. A very large, chromed pistol was holstered on his belt. This was General Adam Tork. Tork was the commanding officer of the 16th Army, and a childhood friend of the President. As the tanks passed the corner they stopped. The LIFVs passed the balcony. President Ginger looked at the passing vehicles with a smile. The 20mm guns were raised in a salute to him, the Commander-In-Chief of the Nachmerian Armed Forces. Suddenly he noticed something weird. One of the turrets was aimed straight at the balcony.
A short rocket whistle followed by a massive explosion caused everyone but the troops to dive for cover. The balcony was gone. So was the entire civilian leadership of Nachmere.
The civilians in the street were not armed. This was unusual in Nachmere, but the street was closed off for the parade. No weapons were allowed. The NCPD officers were mostly shocked, but several of them raised their weapons and fired at the LIFV. The troops were already off the vehicle and they dispatched the police officers with short bursts from their rifles.
At the same time other units from the 16th Army stormed the Parliament, 3 major news networks, and 2 radio stations.
On the Parliament building, a company of 120 Parliamentary Guards fought against the 3200th LRRP Company and the 330th Mechanized Infantry Battalion. The Parliament Guard was the finest fighting force in the Nachmerian Army. But 120 could not hold 800 supported by tanks and LIFVs. Especially since the PG didn't have any heavy weapons in the Parliament building.
5 hours later Nachmere City was completely in the hands of the 16th army. The chief of police ordered his men not to act against the soldiers. There was no point. The 18:00 news on all channels showed only one item. It was an address by General Tork to the Nachmerian people:
"My fellow patriots, my name is General Adam Tork. Some of you do not know me. Those who do know that for the last 37 years I have served my country. I led men to combat in any place my homeland sent me. I was wounded twice. I have lost many friends.
But, in the last few years, I came to the understanding that it was all in vain. The political process was corrupted by the Social-Democrats and the other parties. Ray Ginger, a man I once considered a dear friend, ran for office again and again and ruled the nation for 16 years. We had a democratic process but we did not have democracy.
Today, the Nachmere Armed Forces acted. Ray Ginger and his culprits are dead. Many other corrupted politicians are under arrest. The commanders of the Army, Air-Force and Navy have trusted me with holding the reins of government until we can heal the political system and return sovereignty to its rightful owner, the people.
To heal our country, we must sacrifice. We must sacrifice some freedoms. To have a healthy democracy in the future, we must destroy the phony one we had so far. From this moment on Martial Law is in effect over the entire country. All active members of the parties in the former parliament are to turn themselves over to the military in the next 24 hours or face harsh punishment. All media agencies, written and broadcasted, are to be nationalized. More steps will be announced in the near future.
We are committed to international treaties signed by the former government, and we shall not break them unilaterally.
My fellow countrymen, I assure you, once the system is clear of corruption and incompetence , we will holds a true, fair elections and have a true government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Good Night"
ooc: looking for international response. Any response is ok, whatever. Not looking for internal revolts. Thanks.

Dear General Adam Tork,
At present, I am unsure of how to take this news. If you are going to be noble and stay true to your word, then I applaude you. Corruption and deceit are amongst the worst things within any government.
Worplesdon, though not a democracy itself, congratulates this swift shift of power, and hope that democracy, and not Military Dictatorship, is in place within a few months.
Though I cannot applaude the way in which it was done. Too many lives were lost, and too public it was. If it were not for the decisions of many individuals, much more blood may have been shed.
For now, at least, I wish to bring our two countries together, I want my nation to begin relations with less corrupt countries. Nachmere seems to be a great starting block.
Please accept a $10,000,000 donation, to help in the creation of a commitee to deal with corruption. I also wish to begin diplomatic relations with an embassy, and begin trading between our two great nations.

Ever since the Stratorian Crisis, the Free Republic had kept an eye on the happenings in Nachmere. They were not being bored, either. First there was the Nachmerian dealings with the regime in Anghele that was reported to have killed groups of their citizenry, and then a potential military response to it. Then there was the time when a Nachmerian carrier battle group had gotten destroyed when entering another nation's waters.
So it was with great interest that reports of President Ray Ginger's death came over the television, along with the speech from General Adam Tork. The news didn't stay inside the Lamonian Intelligence Agency (LIA) for long; as the Director-General used his direct line to President Stinson, who was being hailed for improving the Lamonian economy over tenfold.
The direct line was answered within ten seconds. "Director-General Holtz, i'm currently in a meeting with the leadership of the Senate, so this had better be good."
Holtz didn't know how the President would take this news, but he would present it, as his job required. "Mr. President, there has been a coup in Nachmere. President Ray Ginger has been killed, and a General by the name of Adam Tork is claiming to be in charge of the country, which has been placed under military rule. Casualties of the coup are so far unknown, and an accurate count will likely not be forthcoming, due to our lack of agents inside that country. What is our response, sir?"
There was a long pause on the line, and finally, President Stinson responded. "Director-General Holtz, you are now on speakerphone. Please repeat what you just told me to the Senate Leadership. I am personally clearing them for this information."
Holtz, who knew the Lamonian rules for the classification of intelligence very well; did not like the power that the President had to simply decide that someone could know highly classified intelligence, but merely responded, "Yes sir." Then he told everyone what he had already told the President. It sounded like an argument might break out on the other end of the line, what with the tones and volume of the voices involved, but President Stinson managed to quietly calm everyone down before responding.
"We will draft a communication to this Nachmerian General. In the meantime, Holtz, I want you to do everything that you can to gather intelligence on Nachmere, and let me know how the situation develops. Good day." With this, the President ended the call, and called the Foreign Minister.

I shall be blunt, General. The Free Republic fears that you may not restore democracy, but may instead choose to implement a military dictatorship. We do not approve of the way that you have "gotten rid of" President Ray Ginger; there being means to remove him from power that did not involve blood being shed. As we understand the situation, it is only through the actions of certain individuals that more blood was not shed.
Nonetheless, we shall be keeping a wary eye on your nation in the future, and have every expectation that democracy will be restored in Nachmere in the next six months.

Thank you for your message of peace and friendship. While I understand your concern for the human lives lost during our change of government, I assure you they were absolutely needed. The entire casualties of this operation were 289 dead and 670 wounded on both sides, including the former government members. I and my colleagues did not expect the Parliament Guard to resist in face of overwhelming numbers. Unfortunately they did. We had no choice but to storm the Parliament building and that took a lot of hard fighting. We are giving medical attention to all the wounded, from both sides.
As for the re-establishment of democracy, I assure you have nothing to worry about. I am a military man. Always have been. I do not wish to hold this position any longer than needed to return the country to its rightful owners, the people.

Dear President Stinson,
While I understand your concerns as to the future of my country, I wish to put you at ease. I have no wish to be a politician. I was only drawn to action to save my country from people who used democracy as a fig-leaf for their corruption and incompetence. People who ordered unprepared fleets to battles they can't win. People who toyed with public funds. People who befriended some of the worst regimes on earth.
I cannot guarantee that my work will be done in six months, but I assure you I will attempt to make it as short as possible.

We would like to establish an embassy in Nachmere. We are fully aware that the security situation in your nation is likely not all that you would wish, but one of the functions of the staff of the embassy will be to monitor what is going on. They will not spy on your nation, but they will report back on what they can tell is going on in Nachmere; as well as whatever your temporary government might tell them. The embassy would also lead to increased diplomatic ties between our two nations, which have only had the limited contact of the Strator crisis in which to work.
I await your reply.

Dear President Stinson,
The diplomats of the foreign ministry have not been harmed, like all civil-service employees. I assure you if your diplomats apply for an embassy in the usual manner I will make sure our people approve it with haste. As far as not spying…All embassies spy. Just make sure they don’t get caugh.

4 days after taking over, General Adam Tork appears on the 18:00 news on all channels:
"Good evening, my fellow patriots.
I have several announcements to make. The first is that we are currently holding 90% of former party members from the wanted list distributed 3 days ago. The NAF high command has decided that no more blood should be shed, and the maximum sentences to those found guilty of crimes against democracy will be life in prison. We are also looking for countries to receive these people as an alternative to holding them here.
A committee of academics, businessmen, civil-service workers, and trade-union representatives will be convened starting next Monday in the Parliament building. The purpose of this committee is to rewrite the constitution and allow a quick re-establishment of democracy. The meetings will be open to the public and I welcome all citizens and foreign delegates to attend.
Our goal is to have a temporary civilian government in 6 months, followed by elections in 14 to 16 months.
On another topic, I have had reports of problems between citizens and the police. Let me make it clear that the existing civilian laws are still in place. The police enjoys the full support of the NAF, and if needed will receive manpower and assets to maintain public order.
Good night, my fellow patriots.
