Operation Urgent Fury (MT/Early PMT, Semi-Open)

OOC: If you wish to join, either TG me or post an OOC request. Pretty simple. I also need someone to play the Wessig rebels, as the country itself does not "exist" on NS. It's roughly like Mexico is today, although more or less entirely like the northern portion of the country. I got uber-writer's block on this one, so tell me how I did.
IC:
The city of Ciudad laid silent in the early morning hours of the day, a small dust storm blowing in from the south as a faint ray of sunlight pierced the darkened horizon and illuminated it in a brownish haze. It would still be a few hours before the early wakers would even consider getting up, and a few more after that until town would be abuzz with activity once more. Off, somewhere deep inside the city itself, a swingset shuttered as a gust of wing caught it and rattled the metal ribcage; startling a nearby sleeping dog into a barking fit. All was normal, or would have been, if the town had been populated at all.
If someone had looked upon the mass of concrete, asphalt, and bleached stone a week ago, they would have seen a lively town with people going about their daily business and automobile traffic frequenting the roads. But, that was a week ago, before the area had been caught up in the struggle between rebels and loyalists, before the coup, before the overthrow. In reality, the rebels didn't want anything other than power. They pretended to be for the people, alluding to what a better country Wessig would be if they took control. Now, everybody wished they hadn't listened and stayed back where they came from. It took only days for the rebels to overwhelm the undersupplied and unsuspecting loyalist troops, starting with the bombings of important government buildings in the downtown Ciudad area and leading to full on engagement with stragglers. Although there were still plenty of remaining loyalists left inside the city itself to continue the fight, the rebels had all but assumed control of the country, creating a parallel de jure government.
Falkasia, sharing it's southern border with Wessig, was at the forefront of the waging battle unfolding inside it's southern neighbor. Plagued by endless tides of refugees retreating from the fighting and frequent bloody skirmishes erupting along the border, many local residents began fearing for their safety; prompting action on the part of the Falkasia government. It was decided that an invasion would occur, both on part of protecting the Falkasia homeland and also to dissolve the potentially dangerous situation occuring in Ciudad and the coutry itself.

OOC: I'd be willing to take a stab at RP-ing as the rebels. Get "mah evilz" on, and all that.
Just a few quick questions though: What's the population like for Wessig (approx. equal to Mexico, or thereabouts?), what is the troop strength of the rebels and what equipment do they have access to (tanks, aircraft, ships, etc.), and do you mind if (for RP's sake) we use RL maps of Mexico and the U.S.?
If I have further questions I'll ask as they come up (or shoot you a TG), and if I'm accepted I'll get cracking on an IC post.

OOC: Yea, that works, lol. Always enjoy RPing with you. Yea, population's roughly the same as Mexico, with the fighting mostly centered in the desert areas close to what would be the US Border. Troop strength is roughly 25-35 thousand (with loyalist roughly the same), using mostly captured Mexican equipment and second-hand US military hardware. As for suing the maps, that's perfectly fine. Wessig is only the northern part of Mexico though, comprising the desert regions from the Gulf Coast to the Baja. For reference, think Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, kinda what I was aiming to model this operation after but with different tactics.

OOC: This is the map that I will be using for the establishment of Wessig's territorial boundaries: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/americas/mexico_rel97.jpg
I will be claiming everything above the 24 Degrees Latitude line (the big line running left to right by La Paz, through Durango and just North of Ciudad Victoria) as the (former) Federal Republic of Wessig. The capitol will be located in Culiacan, with Ciudad Juarez serving as the "Ciudad" in Falk's opening post.
I will RP the rebels as maintaining a force of approximately 30,000 ground troops, ranging in training and loyalty from "elite" and "fanatical" (respectively), through "poorly-trained" and "disloyal." Elite units will be deployed at the company-level and concentrated in the major cities of Culiacan, Monterrey, Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, Mexicali and Chihuahua. These forces will amount to roughly 2,000-3,000 of the total rebel strength, with approximately half of this number defending the capitol in Culiacan. Remaining units (of various skill and loyalty) will be dispersed through the remainder of the country, concentrated mostly on population centers. Due to ongoing fighting, approximately 20% of the total rebel strength will be located in the vicinity of Ciudad Juarez in the opening days of the RP.
Popular support for the rebellion will be highest in the Southern areas, where the majority of their strongholds are located, while military concentration (excluding the Culiacan area) will be mostly in the North. Resistance forces will be organized mostly in the North, tentatively concentrated on Hermosillo. Wessig Rebel aircraft will be scattered throughout the country (mostly to prevent their being destroyed in one raid), while naval units will be based at La Paz, in order to provide support for the capitol and to interdict Pacific naval deployments.
Rebel forces will have access to poison gas (I am presently unsure of how developed I wish their Chemical WMD capabilities to be, though they will have access to basics such as Chlorine gas), will be holding civilian human shields at important military installations, and could (depending on what Falk thinks) invest in cross-border terrorist actions in order to pressure the Falkasian government into a cease-fire.
What can I say, I'm in it to win it :)

OOC: That's fine. Falkasia only uses Russian stuff becuase I haven't taken the time to revamp my military. And I know where you're coming from. UDS has a lot of stuff, but most of it is too clustered into a few categories anyways. The Orbat looks perfectly fine with me though. I'm really laid back when it comes to Orbats or other people playing parts of my nation, lol.

General Juan Galverez strode through the city of Ciudad along with a personal escort of twenty men, surveying the outcome of the latest round of fighting between his forces, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Wessig, and a handful of loyalist soldiers holding their allegiance to the now-defunct Federal Republic. The streets were deserted; a wise decision on the part of the locals, as a heavy Popular Front military presence was now moving into the region. Galverez already knew that harsh reprisal actions would be taken against the citizens of the Ciudad area, as this was one of two strongholds of opposition to his still-solidifying rule.
The Front had developed in Southern Wessig, initially claiming to be a far left-wing militant opposition group against the sitting Republic. In truth, the organization was run by General Galverez and financed by a handful of wealthy... "businessmen," transporting various "substances" through Wessig into more-developed nations. Their cash had provided for the training and equipment necessary for a well-run military organization, while Galverez's charismatic leadership provided the men necessary to take the country.
And take the country they had. Championing the cause of the "common worker" in the early days, the rebellion spread like wildfire. From the strongholds along the Southern border, forces streamed into the capitol of Culiacan, taking the city in less than a week. From there, the Front's military arm dispersed throughout the country, hunting down the leaders of the previous Republic who had not already sworn personal oaths of loyalty to Galverez. Their executions served as... examples, to any who were considering further acts of resistance against the new regime. With Ciudad rapidly falling into the hands of the Popular Front, only the Republican stronghold in Hermosillo remained to be taken.
The threat of foreign intervention, especially after the steps taken to exterminate potential counter-revolutionary leaders wherever they could be tracked down, lingered over the nation. The Falkasians, especially, were being troublesome, going out of their way to assist Republican loyalist refugees and the remanants of the Federal Republic's military in crossing the border. Galverez had even received reports of shots being fired across the border, as the Falkasians moved to deter his forces from completing their mission of neutralizing the previous government and its most-vocal supporters.
With a wave of his hand, General Galverez turned his back on Ciudad, issuing orders that half of the loyalist figureheads that could be located in the city were to be rounded up and publicly executed. The remaining half were to be distributed among various military installations that fell into the Popular Front's hands during the brief civil war, along with the PF's troop formations, in order to serve as human shields in the event of foreign intervention. He even made sure to have representatives of various media outlets present, complete with video cameras, in order to document the arrival and imprissonment of these human shields. Of course, they would promptly be moved to alternate locations within the various buildings and complexes holding them, in case any outside force planned to rescue these individuals based on the information they received in the news broadcasts. In case that proved insufficient deterrence, the Popular Front had access to more... persuasive means of discouraging adventurous foreign governments from intervening.
As he made preparations to return to the capitol, specifically his residence in the former Presidential Palace, General Galverez forced a smile from his face. He would soon be sitting astride one of the most lucrative narcotics smuggling routes in the entire world, making himself a fortune and turning Wessig into an impenetrable fortress. Any nation that plotted to intervene against him would soon find itself bled dry by the Popular Front.

Open Communication From the Popular Front for the Liberation of Wessig
For too long our nation sat under the thumb of the oppressors, our people forced to grovel in the dirt like animals. The so-called "Federal Republic" served as no more than a sham government, exploiting the Wessig people on behalf of the industrialized world. Our people have toiled endlessly, producing the goods essential for the capitalist parasites to continue their dominance over us. In return we have received poverty, homelessness, starvation and death!
No longer will the puppet government of the so-called "Federal Republic" enslave the Wessig people on behalf of their capitalist masters. We, the Popular Front, are now in control of our nation. In order to prevent the return of the oppressors I, General Juan Galverez, now call upon you, the mighty People of Wessig, to strike now for your nation! Those who are able, take up arms against the Loyalists. Those who are old, or infirm, or too young, report the traitors to our Revolutionary forces, so that they are punished for their betrayals. All must take part in order to prevent the counter-revolutionaries from destroying what we have worked so hard, and for so long, to establish!
No longer will the industrialized world press Wessig into the dirt, where we would be treated as dogs. From this day forth, the Popular Front will earn Wessig's rightful place in the world, through sheding the blood of our enemies!

Premier Kazyenko leaned back in his easy chair, reviewing the day's problems and world news before going to bed for the night. The parlor he was sitting in, well off the main hallway and away from the chaos attributed to running a country, always brought peace and sanctuary to him as he recapped some important news, took time away for making decisions, or to simply relax. He always found comfort among it's cherry wood accents and bookcases, the warm, crackling fireplace that illuminated the room, the television, and most importantly, his favorite chair. For some reason, the room acted as his home away from home, rekindling memories of his childhood with it's warm interior. As he sat there, the large and overstuffed pink chair collapsed slightly underneath his weight, he looked over the local Falkasian news. He shuffled through the pages, casting them aside on the carpetted floor in a helter-skelter manner as he read.
"As usual, nothing good," he mused, slightly mocking the fact that he himself knew almost anything before the average person even became aware.
Unsatisifed, he cast the remaining pages onto the floor and reached for the TV remote at his side. Quickly raising it in the direction of the small, portable TV set up on an end table, he pressed the power button and watched as it flickered to life. First came static, but as the TV tuned itself, the nightly news appeared. It was by far not his favorite of the three Falkasian news channels, but he didn't much care tonight.
Appearing on screen was another of the border battles occuring along the Wessig "frontier," as it had been dubbed by the local residents for the sheer violence as a result of the coup. Although it was still more or less secure, the daily engagements were taking their toll on local troop morale and numbers. Little by little, they were wearing down the defenders and it would only be a short while until there was nothing left protecting the thin line on a map that was called the "border." This battle had been a rather bloody one, resulting in more than average casualties on both sides, but had inevitably resulted in the retreat of the Wessig invaders. Kazyenko had known about the problems for a while now, but had sat on his hands and done nothing about them. It was this footage of the battle that began to motivate him into a decision. What finally pushed him over the edge however, was a recorded "broadcast" of the new Wessig leader, a guy named Galverez, threatening the rest of the world. Although he made sure to include the entire world, Kazyenko knew it was focused on Falkasia. Butterflies wnet through his stoumach as the revelation unfolded upon him. Putting the remote on the armrest of the chair, he reached for the room's phone and dialed his Chief of Staff. The phone was answered momentarily.
"Morgan, I need a conference with the Joint Ministers immediately. Something's just come up that we need to discuss, and urgently."
"Yes sir, I'll call them in at once."
"Good, have them meet me in five minutes inside the war room. Tell them to ignore the formalities. We've got a situation on our hands."
======
On his way to the conference room, Kazyenko made sure he wasn't going to be caught off guard when he carried his plan through. Signalling an aid for a phone, he quickly called Commander Bryan Shaffer of the 53rd Mechanized Infantry Armored Battalion, stationed just across the border from the capitol of Ciudad. Placing the phone to his ear, he began speaking.
"Commander, I'm giving you the go ahead to advance into Wessig. Be advised that friendly forces are still a ways out, but should be onsite within a few hours. Your main objective is to secure the border crossing and wear down the rebels as much as possible until reinforcements arrive. Last thing we need is them deciding to counter-attack with our pants down. If they prove to be too strong, stall them at the very least. As soon as they see Falkasian vehicles in their country, they'll know what's going on. Good luck Commander, and godspeed."

"Yes Mr Premier, with some Air, Artillery, and Missile support i can do it" Shaffer said, at the same time he was deciding what to do, he quickly called up his 5 Infrantry Company Commanders, and told them the plan.
#1 The Attack Choppers would proceed across the border, elimating as many border guards as possible
#2 40 of the IFVs would charge across the Bridge with 320 Troops And secure the Far side
#3 12 MH-61s would take a further 240 Men farther into the City to buy time for Defenses to be built up around the Bridge
#4 Defenses were to be built on and around the bridge
#5 The remainder of the Battalion with the Exception of the tanks will advance across the bridge
#6 The 240 man advance team will slowly retreat to the Bridgehead
#7 The battalion will construct a Powerful defense line on the far side
#8 after a while the battalion will withdraw in sections across the river in order to create a killzone on the bridge

(OOC: Sorry for the short post, I'm off for a few hours for a Senior Week activity. Will edit more in later)
One benefit of living in the Information Age was that news travelled incredibly quickly. For example, once word got out that the Falkasians were moving armored units and attack helicopters to the border regions directly across from Ciudad, General Galverez immediately issued orders for his own air and ground units to begin pulling back. Attempting to hold positions in the open desert along the border would be suicidal, especially with Falkasian air and artillery superiority in the region.
Thus, when the first Falkasian ground units began pouring across the border, they would find abandoned (and in some instances booby-trapped) fortifications and strong points, with no defenders in sight. While the Popular Front in Wessig could be called many things, militarily incompetent would not be one of them. Attempting to engage the Falkasians in a straight-up fight would be nothing but a waste of men and material. Instead, the Popular Front would play to its strengths.
A majority of the forces in the region were evacuated well before the Falkasians crossed the border. Those that were left were concentrated in Ciudad, mostly disbursed among the civilian population. All told, roughly three hundred Popular Front rebels were left in the city by the time the first foreign soldiers arrived; two hundred under strict orders to establish hidden weapons caches, dress in civilian garb and remain undetected at all costs. The other hundred were preparing the "official" resistance to the pending foreign occupation of the former capitol.
A pair of four-man Stinger missile teams conducted the first counter-attack by the Popular Front forces in Ciudad. Heading for the rooftops of two large buildings in the city once they heard rotors approaching the city, each of the four men carrying Stinger launchers took careful aim at the aircraft rapidly approaching the city, then fired their heat-seeking missiles. Their accompanying loaders brought one extra missile for each launcher, as remaining in one place and firing more than two shots would almost certainly result in the launchers being identified and destroyed. Besides, the goal was to bloody the Falkasians and inflict casualties, not end the war in one day. Time would be on the Popular Front's side.

Shaffer had never truely expected to find the enemy at the border crossings. So therefore he ordered Operation Plan B into effect, which involved having SR-71 and U-2 Recon Planes overfly the desert At night using Thermal Imaging to Locate the enemy. Meanwhile, the Battalion itself would stay near the bridge while Colonel Shaffer Requested more troops.
As for the stingers, one helo took some slight Sharpnel damage, otherwise no damage was done and most of the missiles missed

Shocked that their attack against the arriving Falkasian helicopters- defenseless troop transports no less- had accomplished nothing, the Stinger teams withdrew before any hostile fire could be directed against them. They abandoned their equipment, and quickly shed their uniforms in exchange for civilian clothing. Soldiers trained in specialized fields, especially air-defense, were valuable commodities in the Popular Front and would not be discarded lightly in the opening hours of the war. Thus, each man was ordered to infiltrate what would surely be a stream of refugees fleeing South, away from the conflict and back to PFLW territory, where they would rejoin the rebel forces.
As scouts stationed at observation points throughout the city reported the arrival of the transport helicopters and Falkasian ground troops, phase two of the Popular Front's resistance began. Twelve men, assembled into three teams of four, raced to their positions and hurriedly set up their equipment- three M-252 81mm mortars. Relying on fire-control vectored in by the observors, each mortar team fired a single spotting round, before adjusting their aim based on the reports of the spotters and unleasing a fifteen round salvo at what appeared to be the largest concentrations of airlifted Falkasian soldiers.
While this operation would normally be a three man job, the fourth man was the key addition. In order to prevent any Falkasian fire-finder RADARs from locking onto their position and launching counter-battery fire, each mortar team was limited to exactly one minute and thirty seconds of firing. Thus, while three men manned each mortar, the fourth man kept careful track of the time, evacuating the position once time had expired. Again, the equipment was left behind as the Popular Front had more mortars (and other weaponry) in Ciudad than it had personnel to properly employ them. Further one-time use mortar positions had been prepared, pre-sighted on the main bridge connecting Ciudad and Falkasia that would certainly be used for the resupply and reinforcement of the Falkasian invaders, and would be used once the enemy began crossing the border in force.
In the mean time, keeping track of the developing invasion by monitoring the Popular Front's radio net, General Galverez smiled and raised a disposable, one-time use cellular phone to his face. He dialed and reached a number in the city of Mexicali, instructing the listener on the other end to simply "Release the package." Confirming that the listener had received his instructions, Galverez knew that the next step would be the release of his previously-taped announcement of the Falkasian invasion, and his broadcast to the world for assistance. The tape would be hand-delivered to an international media outlet in the city, where it would be made available to the entire planet within a matter of minutes. The crimes of the Falkasians would soon be global knowledge.

"As you are listening to this statement, I must have the unfortunate duty of informing you that the recently-liberated People's Democratic Republic of Wessig has been unjustly and illegally invaded by forces belonging to the Nation of Falkasia. No declaration of war has been levied against our nation, nor has the Falkasian government made any attempt to make diplomatic contact with us. Instead, the full military might of our northern neighbor has been loosed upon us for no cause."
"On behalf of the people of Wessig, I must ask you, our fellow citizens of the world, to aid us in any way you that can. Those nations willing to take up arms to help us defend our sovereignty, our right to exist without being enslaved to the industrial warmongers to the North, are needed now more than ever. Those who are not strong enough to fight, may help us by choosing to boycott the products exported by our invaders."
"For now, I must see to my people and my nation, in order to aid in our resistance against the invaders. It is my hope that, with your help, one day a fully free and independent Wessig will exist without fear of being unjustly invaded by our neighbors. In response to the illict and unwarranted call for help from the de jure Wessig leader, General Galverez, Premier Kazyenko sent out his own ultimatum on the same channel, hoping to reach the General or at least his staff before the invasion began. Sitting in front of a simple but elaborate mantlepiece in his "official" office, Kazyenko adjusted his chair and folded his hands, focusing his attention on one of a few cameras before speaking.
"As many of you are aware, there has been a great ursurgence in the country of Wessig, the southern neighbor of Falkasia. Such is their own conflict, and should be left up to them to deal with with the utmost minimum foreign intervention. Naturally, even we wouldn't have become involved if it hadn't bothered us. The truth of the matter is, however, that we have been far from left alone. Up until today, countless unwarranted and pre-emptive raids made by rebelious Wessig forces have lashed out across the border, many of the engagements actually spilling over onto Falkasian soil. At first, we were lienent at best, choosing to ignore the attacks and sit on our hands instead of acting on the matter as we should have. But now, after increasing hostilies, time has run out; for both the Falkasian people and those of Wessig. The time to act is at hand, and without a doubt, it will be sweet delieverance for those whose lives have been forever tainted by the turmoil erupting in Wessig. Their so-called leader, "General" Galverez, is a madman; a lunatic. He chooses to disguise cold, hard facts behind near endless walls of lies and coverups. He uses human shields and other outright despicable tactics to extend his own agenda, exacting cruel and remorseless revenge on those who even consider the act of opposing him. He is, to say the least, a cold hearted and soulless monster. As no one in Wessig appears to be willing to take his downfall into their own hands; We, the Falkasian people will take the charge of doing it for them. No longer will this new Wessig oppression reign unchecked; unimpeded by any power, foreign or domestic. No longer will the Wessig people live in fear of their own government, now dangerously ruled over by an inhuman despot. No longer will they be denied of simple human freedoms. The time to act is now, and we are ready."
With that, the camera feed cut, returning the station to nightly programming.

We could do some political dueling to fill time if necessary, but having both sides responding to each other as the war remains stuck in 'pause' mode would be rather dull and impractical.
Also, this is a semi-open thread so people are more than welcome to join in pending Falk's approval. More participants (especially on Falk's side) would help keep the action moving.

Immediately following his speech to the world, Kazyenko sat down with his Joint Ministers and discussed how they were going to proceed. A peacable solution was out of the question, so only militaristic intervention was a viable option. Debating it over with his Minister of Defense, and amid calls of treason and illegality from the Attorney General, a basic battleplan was hatched.
The massive 4th Army Corps would be deployed to the border, ordered to advance into Wessig and support the already present forces however they could. Their main objectives would be rebel hotspots and suspected locations of political prisoners, but also to reinforce know loyalist and Falkasian holdouts. Stanging in reserve would be the bulk to the 5th Army Corps, ready to advance in in place of the 4th if the need arose.
It was all a simply plan really, but as everyone knew, no plan survived contact with the enemy.
======
In response to the decision, a wire was sent to all Falkasian forces via secure radio, both already in Wessig and along the border, detailing the plan.
"Attention Falkasian forces! Tommorrow morning, 7 AM, the 4th Army Corps will be mobilized across the southern border and into Wessig, once and for all eliminating the threat that the rebels pose to us. All civilians should be regarded as non-combatants, unless designated as otherwise. Following the succesful incursion into Wessig soil, 3rd and 12th Battalion are to meet up with Commander Schaffer as soon as possible. God speed and good luck!"
